The Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez, Sea of Cortés or Vermilion Sea; locally known in the Spanish language as Mar de Cortés or Mar Bermejo or Golfo de California) is a body of water that separates the Baja California Peninsula from the Mexican mainland. It is bordered by the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, and Sinaloa with a coastline of approximately 4,000km (2,500mi). Rivers which flow into the Gulf of California include the Colorado, Fuerte, Mayo, Sinaloa, Sonora, and the Yaqui. The gulf's surface area is about 160,000km2 (62,000sqmi).
The Gulf is thought to be one of the most diverse seas on the planet, and is home to more than 5,000 species of micro-invertebrates. Home to over a million people, Baja California is one of the longest peninsulas in the world, second only to the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia. The Gulf of California is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Why are so many unique marine species restricted to the northern Sea of Cortez?
For years scientists have recognized that the Sea of Cortez, the long sea that sits between mainland Mexico and the Baja California peninsula, has been home to many species of marine animals that are found nowhere else on earth. I'm interested in how and why this relatively small area of the ocean is home to so many unique species. In order to learn more about this, I study a type of fish called a mudsucker to see how its genes have changed over time. These changes can be caused either by natural selection or from the physical separation of different individuals of the same species. To figure out which processes may be most important in the Sea of Cortez, my work looks at patterns in the DNA sequence of mudsucker genes to see how and when different species of mudsucker have formed over tim...
