Las Sergas de Esplandián (The Adventures of Esplandián) is the fifth book in a series of Spanishchivalric romancenovels by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo, which began with Amadís de Gaula. The first known edition of this work was published in Seville in July 1510. But there was another edition published prior, possibly in Seville in 1496, as the sixth book of the series, Florisando, appeared four months earlier, in April 1510.
Ruth Putnam argues that Montalvo finished his novel sometime after 1492 but before Queen Isabella died (she died in 1504).
Las Sergas mentions a fictional island named California, inhabited only by black women, and ruled by Queen Calafia. When Spanish explorers learned of an island (actually a peninsula) off western Mexico rumored to be ruled by Amazon women, they named it California.

In 1956, some fragments of the version from the early fifteenth century were found and published (in the Bulletin of the Royal Spanish Academy). This has shown that the novel was originally written in Spanish (not Portuguese) and it has been seen that the primitive wording was broader than that recast by Rodríguez de Montalvo.

Who is California Named After: History in a Minute (Episode 96)
History in a Minute is back!
California is named after the mythical island of California, which was popularized in the 16th century novel "Las Sergas de Esplandián" by Spanish author Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo. In the novel, California is described as a land of gold and precious stones, populated by beautiful Amazonian women who wielded weapons and ruled without men. When Spanish explorers arrived in the region now known as California in the 16th century, they named it after the mythical island due to the similarities they perceived between the two lands. However, the origins of the name California remain somewhat disputed, and there are alternative theories regarding its etymology.

Spanish - How "California" got its name?
Have you noticed the number of names in the United States that come from Spanish?
California is one of them and today we are going to see what its origin is.

Many believed that this was the mythical island of Queen Calafia, and they named it California.
In the book, the queen was fighting Christians and California may be a derivation of the Arabic "caliph."
The other possibility is that it is a word formed by "cali" + "forno" which would mean hot oven, as a reference to a dry and warm land.
