Caernarfon Castle (Welsh:Castell Caernarfon) is a medieval fortress in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, north-west Wales cared for by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service. There was a motte-and-bailey castle in the town of Caernarfon from the late 11th century until 1283 when King Edward I of England began replacing it with the current stone structure. The Edwardian town and castle acted as the administrative centre of north Wales and as a result the defences were built on a grand scale. There was a deliberate link with Caernarfon's Roman past and the Roman fort of Segontium is nearby.
While the castle was under construction, town walls were built around Caernarfon. The work cost between £20,000 and £25,000 from the start until the end of work in 1330. Despite Caernarfon Castle's external appearance of being mostly complete, the interior buildings no longer survive and many of the building plans were never finished. The town and castle were sacked in 1294 when Madog ap Llywelyn led a rebellion against the English. Caernarfon was recaptured the following year. During the Glyndŵr Rising of 1400–1415, the castle was besieged. When the Tudor dynasty ascended to the English throne in 1485, tensions between the Welsh and English began to diminish and castles were considered less important. As a result, Caernarfon Castle was allowed to fall into a state of disrepair.
Caernarfon (/kərˈnɑːrvən/; Welsh:[kaɨrˈnarvɔn]) is a royal town, community, and port in Gwynedd, Wales, with a population of 9,615 (this figure does not include nearby Bontnewydd or Caeathro, as they are in separate communities). It lies along the A487 road, on the eastern shore of the Menai Strait, opposite the Isle of Anglesey. The city of Bangor is 8.6 miles (13.8km) to the north-east, while Snowdonia fringes Caernarfon to the east and south-east. Carnarvon and Caernarvon are Anglicised spellings that were superseded in 1926 and 1974, respectively.
Known as Carnarvon until 1832, and then as the Carnarvon Boroughs or Carnarvon District of Boroughs from 1832 to 1950 and as Caernarvon from 1950 to 1983, it is named after Caernarfon, the main town within the constituency. Its most famous member was David Lloyd George, who was MP for 55 years. When Lloyd George became prime minister in 1916 it became the first Welsh constituency to be represented by a serving prime minister.
Plaid Cymru held the seat continuously from 1974 until its abolition in 2010, longer than they have held any other seat.

Caernarfon Castle History / King Edward I’s Mighty Medieval Fortress
The impressive Caernarfon castle stands quite magnificently on the eastern shore of the Menai Strait and in the town of Caernarfon. This Edwardian masterpiece formed part of the ‘Ring of Iron’ - a series of stone castles that circled northern Wales, built after Edward I’s conquest of Wales.

Join us as we visit Caernarfon Castle In Gwynedd North Wales. One of King Edward I's stunning Medieval Fortresses that was built in this region of the country.
Built over a duration of 57 years between 1283 and 1330, and costing in the region of £25,000, this stunning castle is probably the most well known in North Wales due to its signafigence in British History.
The now King Charles III was the crowned Prince of Wales when he was 20 years old at the investiture ceremony at Caernarfon Castle. The title of Prince of Wales has now been passed on to Prince William, although it is believed that a ceremony similar to that which was held for his father in 1969 is highly unlikely.
Today though, this does not mean that this amazing piece of history is not worth a visit. With day tickets for a family costing in the region of £30. Tickets can be purchased on the following link - https://cadw.gov.wales/visit/places-to-visit/caernarfon-castle.
We had previously visited Beaumaris Castle which is on the island of Anglesey and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing the ruins, but Caernarfon castle is a very different experience. It is extremely well maintained and has an abundance of historic facts and displays spread throughout.
Firstly though when you visit, you may well find yourself being surprised by it's actual size and design. With a unique hourglass shaped design and it's brazen 12 towers, it is a structure that dominates the landscape and really does appear to stand guard over the beautiful town of Caernarfon.
It has 12 towers which can all be climbed (we say climbed as the narrow steps, do make it feel like quite a hike). The most notable of which are Black Tower, Chamberlain Tower, The Queen's Tower and the tallest, which is Eagle Tower. With its three great turrets and 18-feet thick walls, it is the dominant structure of the castle.
If you are not feeling that energetic, we recommend that you at least go to the top of the Eagle Tower as the views are spectacular. Especially on a sunny day, such as when we visited. You can see across Menai Straits to Anglesey and get a birds eye view of the town itself.
The castle has a small café near the entrance and it also has some great displays which details the history of not just the castle but of King Edward I, giving you a great insight as to the turbulent and often quite violent history that has taken place on the grounds of not just the castle but the surrounding areas.
Also located in the castle is the Museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers - The Museum is housed in two towers of Caernarfon Castle. In it you will find a wealth of original exhibits, supported by film, sound and models, which tell the story of over 300 years of service by Wales' oldest infantry regiment, in peacetime and in war, all around the world. With models, medals and a vast array of historic weapons, you will find enough to entertain all ages.
In addition to the museum, there is also a cinematic display in the North Tower (situated at the far side of the castle from the entrance), which gives you a great insight into the castles history. From William The Conquerors wooden fortress that was initially situated at the site, right through to modern day.
At present, 2022, there is a £4.5 million improvement taking place near the King's Gate, during which an elevator is being introduced. This will allow everyone to experience the castle and the amazing views from the towers. Being wheelchair friendly this will obviously enhance the appeal of the sightseeing attraction. Which even today attracts in excess of 200,000 tourists.
We hope you enjoy our tour of the Stunning Caernarfon Castle and we certainly recommend it as a great place to see and day our of your are in this part of the country.

Caernarfon Castle's entrance is very odd as well as how it's arrow loops are placed, but you can't tell from the outside, so let me show you the inside and why.

Historian Marc Morris details the history of the British castle. Each episode details either an era of castle-building, what they were used for, and/or focuses more specifically on castle-building in a specific region of Britain.
