The Menai Strait (Welsh:Afon Menai, the "River Menai") is a narrow stretch of shallow tidal water about 25km (16mi) long, which separates the island of Anglesey from the mainland of Wales.
The strait is bridged in two places – the main A5 road is carried over the strait by Thomas Telford's iron suspension bridge, the first of its kind, opened in January 1826, and adjacent to this is Robert Stephenson's 1850 Britannia Tubular Bridge. Originally this carried rail traffic in two wrought-iron rectangular box spans, but after a disastrous fire in 1970, which left only the limestone pillars remaining, it was rebuilt as a steel box girder bridge, and now carries both rail and road traffic. Between the two bridge crossings there is a small island in the middle of the strait, Ynys Gorad Goch, on which are built a house and outbuildings and around which are the significant remains of fish traps, no longer used.
The Menai Strait is geologically, biologically and culturally important. It is also home to our School of Ocean Sciences.
To celebrate teaching and research excellence at this institution, and the recent opening of the Marine Centre Wales building, a short film was produced in collaboration with CADARN on “The Tides of the Menai Strait”.
Our film shows stunning time-lapse footage of the tides in the Menai Strait over 24 hours. We use animation to show how the tides work – as Sir Issac Newton envisaged them over 300 years ago. Finally, we demonstrate how important the tides are on a global scale, by using a simple laboratory experiment.

Wind Over Tide Menai Strait - Remaster
This was a day of strong easterly winds that coincided with the flood tide in the Menai Strait - together these make for some great waves, just beyond Menai Bridge and some excellent downwind fun!
This is previous footage, it was filmed a few years ago but I've always wanted to edit it a little further. Now I've finally found the time.
It's a good ride!

[55] - Navigating The Swellies - Menai Strait - North Wales
We have to navigate the notorious Swellies in the Menai Strait which is noted for the difficulty in navigating it. It has shoals, rocks, surges and (occasionally) whirlpools and planning your passage through it requires careful study of all the pilotage marks that have been installed over the years.
As if it was not difficult enough, it seems to have sprouted a new hazard as Jet skis and RIB "thrill-seekers" now tear through and often approach yachts closely, presumably to give the paying punters a good view, but the wake turbulence they cause is very unpleasant and you cannot manoeuvre to avoid it.

We started our return leg after lunch with the water around its low point where we were on the straight. As we reached the Britannia bridge, the water was coming in from the end of the straight behind us. Then, the flows kicked in over the cribbin and in the area known as The Swellies.
We had some fun - and a workout! - in this powerful water :-)

I remember standing on the corner at midnight Trying to get my courage up There was this long lovely dancer in a little club downtown I loved to watch her do her stuff Through the long lonely nights she filled my sleep Her body softly swaying to that smoky beat Down on Mainstreet In the pool halls, the hustlers and the losers I used to watch 'em through the glass Well I'd stand outside at closing time Just to watch her walk on past Unlike all the other ladies, she looked so young and sweet As she made her way alone down that empty street Down on Mainstreet And sometimes even now, when I'm feeling lonely and beat I drift back in time and I find my feet Down on Mainstreet
