Stoke-on-Trent (i/stoʊkɒntrɛnt/; often abbreviated to Stoke) is a city in Staffordshire, England, with an area of 36 square miles (93km2). Together with the neighbouring boroughs of Newcastle-under-Lyme and Staffordshire Moorlands, it is part of North Staffordshire, which, in 2011, had a population of 469,000.
The name Stoke is taken from the town of Stoke-upon-Trent, the original ancient parish, with other settlements being chapelries.Stoke derives from the Old Englishstoc, a word that at first meant little more than place, but which subsequently gained more specific – but divergent – connotations. These variant meanings included dairy farm, secondary or dependent place or farm, summer pasture, crossing place, meeting place and place of worship. It is not known which of these was intended here, and all are plausible. The most frequently suggested interpretations derive from a crossing point on the Roman road that ran from present-day Derby to Chesterton or the early presence of a church, said to have been founded in 670 AD. Because Stoke was such a common name for a settlement, some kind of distinguishing affix was usually added later, in this case the name of the river.
Burslem is sited on the eastern ridge of the Fowlea Valley, the Fowlea being one of the main early tributaries of the River Trent. Burslem embraces the areas of Middleport, Dalehall, Longport, Westport, Trubshaw Cross, and Brownhills. The Trent & Mersey Canal cuts through, to the west and south of the town centre. A little further west, the West Coast Main Line railway and the A500 road run in parallel, forming a distinct boundary between Burslem and the abutting town of Newcastle-under-Lyme. To the south is Grange Park and Festival Park, reclaimed by the Stoke-on-Trent Garden Festival.
History
The Domesday Book shows Burslem (listed as Bacardeslim) as a small farming hamlet; strategically sited above a vital ford (crossing) at Longport, part of the major pack horse track out of the Peak District and Staffordshire Moorlands to the Liverpool/London road. As far back as the late 12th century a thriving pottery industry existed, based on the fine & abundant local clays. After the Black Death, Burslem emerges in the records as a medieval town - the 1536 stone church is still standing and in use. Until the mid-1760s Burslem was relatively cut off from the rest of England; it had no navigable river nearby, and there were no good & reliable roads. By 1777 the Trent and Mersey Canal was nearing completion, and the roads had markedly improved. The town boomed on the back of fine pottery production & canals, and became known as 'The Mother Town' of the six towns that make up the city. In 1910 the town was federated into the county borough of Stoke-on-Trent, and the borough was granted city status in 1925.
The constituency was created for the 1918 general election, and abolished for the 1950 general election. From 1885-1918 the Stoke-on-Trent area had been divided into two constituencies: Stoke and Hanley. In 1918, the area was divided into three constituencies: Stoke, Hanley and a new seat called Burslem. Burslem was thus made up from part of the former Stoke seat and part of Hanley.
History
Until 1918, both Stoke and Hanley had been represented by Liberal MPs. The Liberal Party in the area was heavily influenced by support for radical land reform policies such as Site Value Rating and the Single Tax policy. These policies were advocated by R.L. Outhwaite, the MP for Hanley and Josiah Wedgwood, the MP for neighbouring Newcastle-under-Lyne. After 1918, they both left the Liberal Party and joined the Labour Party. There they influenced Andrew MacLaren. who was for many years the standard-bearer for the Labour Party and an advocate of Site Value Rating. At the 1931 General Election, the supporters of land reform were split when MacLaren was opposed by a candidate who advocated a Single Tax policy. This split contributed to MacLaren's defeat. He returned to Parliament in 1935, but left the Labour Party in 1943 and sought re-election as an Independent.

If ever a city deserves the title 'post-industrial wasteland', Stoke-on-Trent is that place. Once a thriving conurbation that grew upon the pottery industry, this union of six towns is now a depressing ramble of dilapidated terraced housing and high streets of boarded up shops. The pottery industry is all but gone. Many buildings are crumbling beyond repair, there are few employment prospects and the locals mostly seem downtrodden and lacking hope. On my visit to the so called 'city centre', Hanley, it seemed that the only plausible pastime was to get pissed in the pubs. Stoke, The City With NO HOPE.

The monkey dust drug ‘epidemic’ that has Stoke-on-Trent in its grip | ITV News
A drug known as monkey dust or MDPHP has been taken in Stoke-on-Trent since at least 2013.
In 2016, there were concerns about its prevalence in the city after police released footage of people, believed to be under the influence of monkey dust, behaving in extreme ways.
Experts described an “epidemic” in the city and the media labelled Stoke as the monkey dust capital of the UK.
Now, a decade after it was first recognised, drugs suspected to be “dust,” seized by Staffordshire Police, will finally be tested to understand why Stoke-on-Trent seems to have such a problem with monkey dust.

Burslem Fire Brigade 1918
This is an extract from a feature film made in Burslem in the Potteries in the summer of 1918, and shown in September. It shows the turn-out of the Burslem Fire Brigade – a typical action scene in early dramas from the turn of the century. Here a pottery girl and her mother are trapped in a blazing building in Stubbs Street in Middleport – just down the road – and the fire engines are turning out. Local people will recognize these streets – and Scotia Road in the background. And these horses were show horses – we have photographs of these horses decorated for showing in agricultural shows. This is not a second fire engine, it’s the same fire engine we’ve just seen – they only had one motorised engine and it was brand new so they filmed it twice to make it look as if they had two. This is the centre of Burslem, with the old Meat Market – what Arnold Bennett called “The Shambles” in the centre background, with the Red Lion public house just beyond that. The ladies are waiting for the fire engines, and these are terrific views of the centre of Burslem as the fire engines steam to the rescue. There are tramlines down the centre of the road and people watching this great activity. Burslem Town Hall is just to our left outside this picture.
This film also features in the documentary; “Stoke-on-Film, 1910-1930”, produced by Ray Johnson.

Dick and Dom's Cat - singing the Stoke on Trent song
Cat's Britain:
Until Series 5 of 'Da Bungalow', each week a short five minute feature would be shown of the travels of 'next door's cat', who would visit the Bungalow to recount the tales of his adventures. The Cat has never been named. It was puppeteered and voiced by Dave Chapman, with a gruff West Yorkshire accent.
The film was normally a short segment about a town, full of irreverent comments about the people and the monuments that the Cat came across. Such towns included Uckfield, Ely, Goring, Sandwich, Wetwang, Letchworth, Pangbourne and Stoke-on-Trent, a song about which was one of the highlights of the third series.
Cat's Britain was also referred to as 'The Pussycat's Travels' in the fourth series of the show. This feature was repeated on Sundays in the fifth series, with the Cat claiming he visited the same places again, met the same people and made exactly the same films.

Stoke-on-Dust is a cutting edge documentary exposing the recent epidemic of synthetic drug use in Stoke-on-Trent, with the aim of raising awareness of the detrimental effects that a substance known as ‘Monkey Dust’ is having across North Staffordshire.

Join us on a walk around Burslem Stoke-on-Trent in August of 2023 and we like. Is it any cleaner than what it was a few years ago we check out where Robbie Williams used to live and remember a lot of the old shops. Enjoy the video
