Confusion can arise over the similarity of this town's name to that of the larger city. If the new borough had to be named after one of the original towns, the main reason for using "Stoke" is that this was where the new town's administration was sited, which in turn was because Stoke had the main transport links.
Stoke-upon-Trent was a parliamentary borough in Staffordshire, which elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons from 1832 until 1885, and then one member from 1885 until 1918, when the borough was enlarged, renamed Stoke-on-Trent, and split into three single-member constituencies.
History
Stoke-upon-Trent was established as a borough by the Great Reform Act of 1832 to represent the Staffordshire Potteries, one of the most populous urban areas in England which had previously had no separate representation. The new borough consisted of Stoke-upon-Trent and parts of the surrounding towns, and at the time of the Reform Act had a population just over 50,000 (of whom 37,220 were in Stoke parish); in 1867 the boundaries were extended somewhat, to bring in a part of Burslem which had previously been excluded.
In further boundary changes implemented at the 1885 general election, the borough was split into two single-member constituencies, the northern part becoming a separate Hanley borough while the southern part (containing Longton and Fenton as well as Stoke itself) retained the Stoke-upon-Trent name; the new constituency had a population just under 100,000 by the time of the First World War. The industrial interests predominated, with the bulk of the voters being pottery workers or miners, although Stoke was a partly middle-class town; at first an apparently safe Liberal seat, it fell narrowly to the Unionists in both 1895 and 1900, perhaps partly because of discord between miners and potters within the local Liberal party. From 1906 it was held by John Ward as a Lib-Lab MP hostile to the Labour Party, who being from the Navvies' Union could defuse the mutual jealousies of the potters and miners.

On Monday 5 October, MPs will debate petitions relating to the UK’s departure from the EU. This debate will start at 6pm and will be opened by Mike Hill MP, a member of the Petitions Committee.
Read the petitions to be debated:
Halt Brexit For A Public Inquiry: https://petition.parliament.uk/archived/petitions/241848
To establish a Public Inquiry into the conduct of the 2016 EU Referendum: https://petition.parliament.uk/archived/petitions/250178
Extend the transition; delay negotiations until after the coronavirus outbreak: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/300412
Why are these petitions being debated?
The Petitions Committee has the power to schedule debates on e-petitions in the House of Commons Second Chamber, Westminster Hall.
In deciding which petitions should be debated, it takes into account how many people have signed the petition, the topicality of the issue raised, whether the issue has recently been debated in Parliament, and the breadth of interest among MPs.
In some cases, the Petitions Committee will group a small number of petitions together when scheduling a debate, where these petitions relate to the same central issue or event.
What will the petitions debate achieve?
Debates on petitions in Westminster Hall are general debates about the issues raised by the petition(s).
MPs can discuss the petition(s) and, if they wish, ask questions about the Government’s position on the issue or press the Government to take action.
A Government Minister takes part in the debate and responds to the points raised.
These debates help to raise the profile of a campaign and can influence decision-making in Government and Parliament.
Petition debates in Westminster Hall cannot directly change the law or result in a vote to implement the request of the petition.
Creating new laws, or changing existing ones, can only be done through the parliamentary legislative process which involves a number of debates, and detailed consideration of the law in draft, in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
This process is normally started by the Government, although there are some ways in which individual MPs or members of the House of Lords who are not in the Government (known as "backbenchers") can ask Parliament to consider new laws.

The Conservative party lost Swindon and Medway to the Labour Party, which also regained Stoke-on-Trent. This marked key victories for Labour, which sees Stoke in particular as a crucial former 'red wall' territory to win back at the next general election.

► We spent the day in Stoke-on-Trent - a city whose three constituencies all voted Conservative in 2019 for the first time ever.
And as we found out - while people there may have an opinion on who lives in Number 10, they also have more pressing things to worry about - like energy bills.

It was a triple victory for Labour at the Civic Centre in Stoke-on-Trent as they managed to hold on to all three Stoke constituencies.
Joan Walley retained her Stoke-on-Trent North seat with 17,809 votes compared to 9,580 for Conservative Andy Large and 7,120 for Liberal Democrat John Fisher.
She was elated, saying: I hope we will have three members of parliament in Stoke-on-Trent to serve in parliament and give all the help and support this city needs to get it through the recession.
Tristram Hunt beat nine other candidates to land the Stoke-on-Trent Central seat vacated by Mark Fisher.
The historian polled 12,605 votes, while the Liberal Democrats trumped the Conservatives by polling 7,039 votes for candidate John Redfern. Tory candidate Norsheen Bhatti trailed behind with 6,833 votes.
Mr Hunt told his supporters: It has been a tough night for Labour but a good night for Stoke-on-Trent. Stoke is open for business, for new ideas.
Rob Flello was able to retain his seat at Stoke-on-Trent South.
He attracted 15,446 votes compared with Conservative James Rushtons 11,316 votes, and Liberal Democrat Dr Zulfiqar with 6,323 votes.
Mr Flello, who took to the podium at 4.45am, said: There has been a move away from Labour to Conservative but what matters is there is a job to be done.
We cannot be known around the world because we have got a BNP problem. We have got fantastic people in our city and that is what we should be known for.
As more results came in on Election night, it looked clear that the Exit Poll was correct and the Conservatives were set for a large majority.
Some of the biggest upsets of the night happened, including Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson losing her own seat to the SNP and Nigel Dodds losing his seat in Belfast North.

Confusion can arise over the similarity of this town's name to that of the larger city. If the new borough had to be named after one of the original towns, the main reason for using "Stoke" is that this was where the new town's administration was sited, which in turn was because Stoke had the main transport links.
