In local government, a city hall, town hall, civic centre, (in the UK or Australia) a guildhall, a Rathaus (German), or (more rarely) a municipal building, is the chief administrative building of a city, town, or other municipality. It usually houses the city or town council, its associated departments, and their employees. It also usually functions as the base of the mayor of a city, town, borough, or county / shire.
By convention, until the mid 19th-century, a single large open chamber (or 'hall') formed an integral part of the building housing the council. The hall may be used for council meetings and other significant events. This large chamber, the 'town hall', (and its later variant 'city hall') has become synonymous with the whole building, and with the administrative body housed in it. The terms 'council chambers', 'municipal building' or variants may be used locally in preference to 'town hall' if no such large hall is present within the building.
The local government may endeavor to use the town hall building to promote and enhance the quality of life of the community. In many cases, "'town halls' serve not only as buildings for government functions, but also have facilities for various civic and cultural activities. These may include art shows, stage performances, exhibits and festivals. Modern town halls or "civic centres" are often designed with a great variety and flexibility of purpose in mind.
The building was designed by Lockwood and Mawson, and opened in 1873.
Winston Churchill gave his first speech after the Second Battle of El Alamein outside the hall in which he called for the people to 'go forward together and put these grave matters to the proof'.
Before its relocation, between 1847 to 1872, the town hall had been the Fire Station House in Swain Street. In 1869, a new triangular site was purchased, and a competition held for a design to rival the town halls of Leeds and Halifax. The local firm of Lockwood and Mawson was chosen over the other 31entries. It was built by John Ives & Son of Shipley and took three years to build at a cost of £100,000. It was opened on 9September 1873, on a very wet day by Matthew Thompson, the mayor.
It was first extended in 1909 to a design by Norman Shaw and executed by architect F.E.P. Edwards, with another council chamber, more committee rooms and a banqueting hall. It was extended again in 1914 with a new entrance and staircase in baroque marble by William Williamson and listed gradeI on 14June 1963.
The Mayor and corporation first proposed that they build a new town hall in 1847. They suggested it again in 1853 after the town had become a borough five years earlier but they still had no central offices. They proposed it again in 1856. The later proposals were prompted by the 1853 Improvement Act, which allowed the borough to borrow £15,000 to build a town hall, courthouse, and police station. The 1856 proposal was also prompted by John Crossley, who was at that time developing Princess Street and Crossley Street, using the architects Lockwood and Mawson who later designed Bradford City Hall. This may explain why the Town Hall blends in with several Crossley Street buildings, which are now listed as a group.
The Council, Edward Akroyd and John Crossley requested that Charles Barry judge the design entries; he disliked all three entries and was asked in turn to submit his own design. His design was accepted, but he died in 1860. His son, Edward Middleton Barry, completed the design which was erected on a 148 x 90ft plot on John Crossley's land. The foundation stone was laid in 1861. Whiteley Brothers were the builders. It was listed on 31 July 1963.
Burslem is sited on the eastern ridge of the Fowlea Valley, the Fowlea being one of the main early tributaries of the River Trent. Burslem embraces the areas of Middleport, Dalehall, Longport, Westport, Trubshaw Cross, and Brownhills. The Trent & Mersey Canal cuts through, to the west and south of the town centre. A little further west, the West Coast Main Line railway and the A500 road run in parallel, forming a distinct boundary between Burslem and the abutting town of Newcastle-under-Lyme. To the south is Grange Park and Festival Park, reclaimed by the Stoke-on-Trent Garden Festival.
History
The Domesday Book shows Burslem (listed as Bacardeslim) as a small farming hamlet; strategically sited above a vital ford (crossing) at Longport, part of the major pack horse track out of the Peak District and Staffordshire Moorlands to the Liverpool/London road. As far back as the late 12th century a thriving pottery industry existed, based on the fine & abundant local clays. After the Black Death, Burslem emerges in the records as a medieval town - the 1536 stone church is still standing and in use. Until the mid-1760s Burslem was relatively cut off from the rest of England; it had no navigable river nearby, and there were no good & reliable roads. By 1777 the Trent and Mersey Canal was nearing completion, and the roads had markedly improved. The town boomed on the back of fine pottery production & canals, and became known as 'The Mother Town' of the six towns that make up the city. In 1910 the town was federated into the county borough of Stoke-on-Trent, and the borough was granted city status in 1925.
The constituency was created for the 1918 general election, and abolished for the 1950 general election. From 1885-1918 the Stoke-on-Trent area had been divided into two constituencies: Stoke and Hanley. In 1918, the area was divided into three constituencies: Stoke, Hanley and a new seat called Burslem. Burslem was thus made up from part of the former Stoke seat and part of Hanley.
History
Until 1918, both Stoke and Hanley had been represented by Liberal MPs. The Liberal Party in the area was heavily influenced by support for radical land reform policies such as Site Value Rating and the Single Tax policy. These policies were advocated by R.L. Outhwaite, the MP for Hanley and Josiah Wedgwood, the MP for neighbouring Newcastle-under-Lyne. After 1918, they both left the Liberal Party and joined the Labour Party. There they influenced Andrew MacLaren. who was for many years the standard-bearer for the Labour Party and an advocate of Site Value Rating. At the 1931 General Election, the supporters of land reform were split when MacLaren was opposed by a candidate who advocated a Single Tax policy. This split contributed to MacLaren's defeat. He returned to Parliament in 1935, but left the Labour Party in 1943 and sought re-election as an Independent.

Halifax Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of West Yorkshire, and around 7 miles southwest of Bradford, is the town of Halifax.
Geographically Halifax lies just north of the River Calder, and is largest town in the Calderdale borough, the westernmost borough of Yorkshire. The town's name was first recorded in 1091 as 'Halyfax', deriving from the Old English 'halh-gefeaxe', meaning 'area of coarse grass in the nook of land. By the 15th century Halifax had become a key wool-manufacturing town.
Since the 13th century Halifax was notorious for its use of the Halifax Gibbet - an early form of guillotine. The Lord of the Manor at the time had the authority to summarily execute any thief caught with stolen goods to the value of 13½d or more. It was eventually outlawed in 1650 by Oliver Cromwell, having claimed near...

We take a walk around Halifax West Yorkshire to see what this city centre is like and what's happening there.
Our route takes us from the historic Piece Hall along Westgate and up to Westgate Arcade, then along Southgate and past Albion Street and down to Corn Market.
We also take in Old Cock Yard, Russel Street, and Cheapside before coming to The Old Arcade and Old Market and then onto Halifax Town Hall.
There are lots of little shopping centres and arcades along the way including Arcade Royale and Albany Arcade which was closed when we filmed sadly.
Halifax West Yorkshire is a town in Calderdale in the North of England. Halifax is actually situated in the South East of the Pennines and close to Bradfield and Huddersfield.
Some of the tourist attractions in Halifax include the Halifax Piece Hall which is an old wool and cloth market where cloth and woollen items were bought and sold.
We also see Borough Market which is an old covered shopping market, and also we check out Halifax Town Hall which still houses the council here.
The town does have sports teams too with Halifax Town being the local football team, and Halifax Panthers being the rugby team of note here. in Halifax UK.
Halifax City Centre is no different to most British or English towns. It has high streets with shops, bars, restaurants, offices and businesses as well as takeaways, stores and markets. Very similar to most British City Centres.

In this walking tour we try and show you the best of Halifax England whether it be the stunning Piece Hall (which really did impress me a lot!) to all the older buildings and historic buildings here.
When we film our walks we like to take our time and wander along the streets and roads of towns and cities we have never visited before, to find the local tourist attractions and find out what makes tourism tick in these places.
As we travel to these places we don't do any research because we want our channel to be one where we film a 4K walk, but we do it where we are surprised by the things we see at the same time you are.
I hope if you take anything away from this video it's that you have seen what it is like in Halifax 2021 and that you would want to come here.

It was eventually outlawed in 1650 by Oliver Cromwell, having claimed nearly 100 victims.
Halifax is home to several notable pieces of centuries-old architecture. Halifax Minster, visible at the start of the video, was built between the 12th and 15th century. In 1779 Piece Hall was built as a cloth hall for handloom weavers to sell the woollen cloth pieces they had produced. Occupying an impressive 10,000 square yards, it currently houses history exhibits, shops, cafes and restaurants. Halifax Town Hall was built between 1861 and 1863 during the height of Queen Victoria's reign.
The Industrial Revolution brought about a natural continuation of Halifax's textile industry having already established itself as one of the leading wool producing towns in the country. The goods produced were transported at greater volumes with the introduction of the Calder and Hebble Navigation - a waterway connecting the River Calder and River Hebble which was opened in 1770. In the 19th century cotton and carpet industries were introduced in the town. In 1844 the railway arrived in Halifax.
In 1853 The Halifax Building Society was opened. The first twelve branches were all local to the town. Nine years later, in 1862, the first branch outside of Halifax opened in Huddersfield. By 1913 it had developed into the largest building society in the UK. The company went through several changes throughout the decades including a stint between 2001 and 2009 when it merged with Bank of Scotland, becoming HBOS, before being bought out by Lloyds. The company's high street presence remains to this day. We even pass by a branch of the Halifax during the walk itself. Whether it's one of the flagships or not I'm not sure!
Cat's eyes were invented by Percy Shaw from Halifax in 1934. These are the studs in the middle of the road that reflect off the headlights of the cars, making the roads easier to navigate at night. Shaw was inspired by tram tracks reflecting his car's headlights on a foggy evening.
Other famous people from Halifax include English wrestling legend Shirley Crabtree (a.k.a. Big Daddy), John Kettley and Ed Sheeran.
