DINOSAUR DIESEL & KEROSENE KETTLE: Custom Weathered “Fell” & “GT3” With Real World Sounds
This quirky 4-8-4 diesel dinosaur is the latest loco by KR Models to hit the shops in the UK in the last couple of weeks. Watch and hear its 6 engines in action as it does its caterpillar march around Neville Grove.
Just as eccentric is "GT3" - the Gas Turbine loco by English Electric and another stunning model by KR Models who specialise in unusual, one off model locomotives.
GT3, with its jet age characteristics is made all the more unusual by its traditional 4-6-0 steam locomotive configuration. As such it required the use of turntables with its single cab situated between the locomotive and tender which holds 2000 gallons of fuel oil along with a vertical boiler.
The KR Models Fell was immediately sent to the Neville Grove weathering studio for weathering by my customer William Sin...

In the early 1950’s effort was expended to determine the viability of using Gas Turbines as a means of producing motive force in a locomotive. GT3, which stands for “ Gas Turbine number 3” (following on from it’s predecessors - units 18000 and 18100 as gas turbines number 1 and number 2).
The GT3 was a prototype mainline gas-turbine locomotive built in 1961 by English Electric at their Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, to showcase its products to British Railways. It was designed by Vulcan engineer J. O. P. Hughes in a project that started back in the early 1950s. Outwardly it looked jus...

What Are The World's Ugliest Locomotives?
After at least four long weeks of research, script-writing and tedious editing, I finally present my video on what I consider to be the ugliest locomotives in the world (including the EMD F125, Siemens SC-44 'Charger' and SNCB Type 12).
This is my first attempt at a 'Top 10' (or in this case, Top 12) list video, and frankly I'd be surprised if it actually does well in terms of views.

The KR Models Fell was immediately sent to the Neville Grove weathering studio for weathering by my customer William Sinden. Its a cracking model that runs as smooth as sewing machine.
The GT3 is a well known @BlufferstoBuffers icon on their social media channels. Although sound fitted, the microphone on my camera just doesn't do the effects justice. It is however, exceptionally fun to drive!
Big thanks to them both for allowing me to operate and share their locos with you.

They remained in service until 1990, serving first on the unelectrified services Stockholm – Mora and Malmö – Karlskrona, later on Ystadbanan."
"Dubs and Company's No.8, manufactured number 436, and No.9 manufactured number 437, had a very unique appearance.
The engine did not have a braking system. Their braking operation was done by being connected to a "Brake Van". Therefore, the engine could not load coal on the rear, so, coal was loaded on abnormally large side water tanks."
"The jointed-boiler steam locomotive was a variant of the Mallet articulated locomotive, in which a flexible coupling was introduced midway along the length of the boiler casing, which allowed the boiler to bend laterally when the locomotive was on curved track. AT&SF locomotive 3322, with ball-joint type flexible boiler. Six such locomotives, all of 2-6-6-2 wheel arrangement, were built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad in 1910 and 1911. The first one built, number 1157, was assembled by the AT&SF in their Topeka shops from two 2-6-2’s (numbers 1051 and 1125). All the rest were built new by Baldwin Locomotive Works."
"The steam locomotive Onward had polygonal driving wheels. This rather ineffective locomotive with only one driving axle was built in 1887 by the Hinkley Locomotive Works in Boston for the Swinerton Locomotive Driving Wheel Company."
"British Railways 10100 was an unusual experimental diesel locomotive known informally as The Fell Diesel Locomotive (after Lt. Col. L. F. R. Fell, who was one of the designers). It was the joint production of Davey Paxman & Co, Shell Refining & Marketing Co and Lt-Col L. F. R. Fell, built for them by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at Derby. Sir Harry Ricardo was also involved. By the time it emerged in 1950, nationalisation had taken place and it carried British Railways livery. The locomotive had six diesel engines, four of them used for traction. There were two auxiliary engines, both of which were 150 hp (110 kW) AEC 6-cylinder units, and these drove the pressure-chargers for the main engines and the purpose of this arrangement was to enable the main engines to deliver very high torque at low crankshaft speed."

This pain persists. I can't resist.
It's more bad trains. Locomotives. Rolling stock. Whatever. It's all terrible.
0:00 - Intro
0:52 - SJ Y3
2:30 - JGR Class 190
5:22 - Santa Fe's Jointed Boiler Steam Locomotives
7:18 - The Onward
9:33 - British Rail 10100 "The Fell Diesel"
"Y3 was a series of diesel railcars operated by Statens Järnvägar (SJ) of Sweden. Six units were delivered by Linke-Hofmann of Germany in 1966–67, with electrical equipment supplied by ASEA.

Outwardly it looked just like a steam tender locomotive, although, in the case of GT3, the tender was loaded with kerosene.
The GT3 was of 4-6-0 wheel arrangement similar to a Bitish Rail standard class 5 steam locomotive chassis fitted with an EM27L gas turbine generating 2,700 hp (2,000 kW). However. the chassis itself was significantly strengthened in order to cope with the high torque of the turbine. It had a maximum speed of 90 mph (140 km/h), weighed in at 125 and a half tons, and was painted in a red oxide livery.
BR tested it at its Rugby test centre and then further testing was conducted on the former Great Central Main Line around Leicester and on the West Coast Main Line around the Shap incline.
At this time, Vulcan was fully engaged in manufacturing diesel-electric locomotives of many different types (including the famous Deltic). These were rapidly gaining hold as the future of rail traction. Diesel-electrics have no need for turntables, a significant advantage that the GT3 with its steam loco style layout was unable to offer.
BR decided to opt for diesel and electric traction, and the GT3 was returned to the Vulcan Foundry at the end of 1962, where it was gradually dismantled. It was eventually scrapped at the Thomas W Ward yard in Salford in February 1966. Interestingly enough having been towed there by a BR standard steam locomotive.

(This video is not monetized because it uses photographs that are not mine).
