Bristol Channel was a cable television broadcaster that operated in the Bristol area of England during a period of experimental licensing of cable community television in the 1970s. It was run by Rediffusion and existed from 17 May 1973 to March 1975.
Dutton, William H.; Blumler, Jay G. (October 1988). "The Faltering Development of Cable Television in Britain". International Political Science Review9 (4): 279–303. doi:10.1177/019251218800900402. JSTOR1600759.(subscription required)
The Bristol Channel floods, 30 January 1607 (New style), resulted in the drowning of a large number of people and the destruction of a large amount of farmland and livestock. Recent research has suggested that the cause may have been a tsunami.
Floods resulted in the drowning of an estimated 2,000 or more people, with houses and villages swept away, an estimated 200 square miles (51,800ha) of farmland inundated and livestock destroyed, wrecking the local economy along the coasts of the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary.
The coasts of Devon and the Somerset Levels as far inland as Glastonbury Tor, 14 miles (23km) from the coast, were also affected. The sea wall at Burnham-on-Sea gave way, and the water flowed over the low lying levels and moors. Thirty villages in Somerset were affected, including Brean which was "swallowed up" and where seven out of the nine houses were destroyed with 26 of the inhabitants dying. For ten days the Church of All Saints at Kingston Seymour, near Weston-super-Mare, was filled with water to a depth of 5 feet (1.5m). A chiselled mark remains showing that the maximum height of the water was 7.74 metres above sea level.
Bristol was a large sidewheel steamer launched in 1866 by William H. Webb of New York for the Merchants Steamship Company. One of Narragansett Bay's so-called "floating palaces", the luxuriously outfitted Bristol and her sister ship Providence, each of which could carry up to 1,200 passengers, were installed with the largest engines then built in the United States, and were considered to be amongst the finest American-built vessels of their era.
Both ships would spend their entire careers steaming between New York and various destinations in and around Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Bristol was eventually destroyed by a fire while in port in 1888.
Development
Bristol and Providence owed their existence to a short-lived company known as the Merchants Steamship Company, which placed the initial order for the vessels with the Webb shipyard in about 1865. Merchants Steamship was an amalgamation of three existing Narragansett Bay shipping lines, the Commercial Line, Neptune Line and Stonington Line. The Company intended to run the two steamers between New York and Bristol, Rhode Island in competition with the Fall River Line, which ran a similar service from New York to Fall River, Massachusetts (both Lines then linking up to railway lines that continued on to Boston).
Once territory of the Wawenock (or Walinakiak, meaning "People of the Bay") AbenakiIndians, early Bristol was one of the most important and embattled frontier settlements in the province. Beginning with seasonal fishing, as early as 1625 the English established at Pemaquid Point a year-round trading post for fur trading. In 1631, the area was granted as the Pemaquid Patent by the Plymouth Council to Robert Aldsworth and Gyles Elbridge, merchants from Bristol, England.
Bristol is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, 23 miles (37km) northeast of Center CityPhiladelphia, opposite Burlington, New Jersey on the Delaware River. Bristol was first incorporated in 1720. Although its charter was revised in 1905, the original charter remains in effect, making Bristol one of the older boroughs in Pennsylvania. 7,104 people lived in Bristol in 1900; 9,256 in 1910; 10,273 in 1920; and 11,895 in 1940. The population was 9,726 at the 2010 census. The current Mayor is Patrick Sabatini Sr.
The first female Mayor was Margaret Stakenas, elected in 1979.
History
Bristol was first settled in 1681 as Buckingham (for Buckingham, England). It was originally used as a port and dock. Bristol is rich in history, boasting many historic and restored houses that line the streets of Radcliffe and Mill.
Until 1725 Bristol served as county seat of Bucks County.
From its earliest days Bristol was a center of milling. With the building of the Delaware Canal and the Pennsylvania Railroad it became a center of transportation and an attractive location for industry.

Activist swims Bristol channel dressed as a mermaid for cleaner rivers
Lindsey Cole is an environment activist and children’s author who recently swam the UK’s Bristol channel, from Penarth in Wales to Clevedon in England, dressed as a mermaid accompanied by a giant, inflatable poo.
Her feat was part of a campaign against the pollution of British waterways. “The health of the rivers in Britain has been in decline over the last decade or more,” she says, partly due to reduced funding for UK government environmental enforcement agencies. “There’s literally no boots on the ground to investigate or prosecute polluters.”
Cole is also working with Conham Bathing, a group of swimmers and local residents applying for bathing status for a segment of the river Avon, whose waters end up in the Bristol channel. If successful, it would force the UK’s Environment Agency ...

Lyle Hess got it absolutely right when he designed the BCC 28 for Sam L. Morse to build out of the new boat building material, fiberglass. Lyle's genius is evident from the 127 BBCs built at the Sam L. Morse Co. between 1976 and 2008.
The BCC was featured in Ferenc Mate's first Volume of "The Best Boats to Buy or Build and in his two later volumes of "The World's Best Sailboats".
This boat is an amazing small and capable voyager with a cult group of passionate owners, many of whom are now scattered around the world.

Hello sailors, come onboard as we leave the south coast and round Lands End. We plan on crossing the Bristol Channel and sailing overnight to Milford Haven, but the wind has other ideas.
Our plan B was Lundy Island, but we needed a plan C. That's where Padstow came in. Can we make it before the tidal gate closes?

If successful, it would force the UK’s Environment Agency to regularly test the river for the bacteria Escherichia coli and Enterococci, both of which can cause illness. However, testing regularly is no guarantee that waters aren’t too polluted to swim in.
The footage is part of a feature-length documentary Rave On for the Avon by Charlotte Sawyer, to be released this autumn.

Minehead is a brilliant location in West Somerset to fish the Bristol Channel for a range of species including Winter Cod. There are several charter boats in the small tidal harbour that take advantage of the great mixed fishing in the nearby waters. Today we are fishing with my friend Mikey Webber aboard his boat Teddy Boy, a brilliant platform for fishing charters.
Between February 16th - 19th we will all be taking part in the SBS Boatlife exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham. SBS Boatlife is a great show going from strength to strength and worthy of consideration for any boater to visit. This year they've got a new boat angling zone with many of the great brands in UK fishing, check out the website here : https://boatlifeevents.com
You can use "FishLocker" as a discount code for your tickets and hopefully I'll see you there.
If you are thinking of fishing the local area I can definitely recommend Mikey on Teddyboy Charters. https://www.teddieboycharters.co.uk

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.
