Bolton is a small rural town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. It is primarily residential, with an economy made up primarily of small businesses. The high school typically has between fifty and one hundred students per class. The population is 4,986 as of the 2010 census. Bolton was incorporated in October 1720 and is governed by town meeting.
History
Originally part of the town of Hartford, the area was referred to as Hartford Mountains or Hanover, until incorporation in October 1720. The northern half of Bolton was set aside in 1808 to form the town of Vernon. Quarries played a significant role in the area’s developing economy and Bolton Notch became the location of the small community of Quarryville. Prior to the railroad, granite was taken by oxcart to the Connecticut River where it was the shipped to major cities on the East Coast.
On November 11, 1723, Jonathan Edwards was installed as the pastor of Bolton.
It is widely speculated that in 1781, George Washington stayed at a home in Bolton. Later that year, the French army is confirmed to have passed through the town. On Rose's Farm, Rochambeau most likely stayed the night with his troops. Archaeological evidence proves that they were in Rose's field; and possibly also across the street (because of the current modern houses there this was
Bolton (i/ˈbɒltən/ or locally [ˈbɜʏtn̩]) is a town in Greater Manchester in North West England. A former mill town, Bolton has been a production centre for textiles since Flemish weavers settled in the area in the 14th century, introducing a wool and cotton-weaving tradition. The urbanisation and development of the town largely coincided with the introduction of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. Bolton was a 19th-century boomtown, and at its zenith in 1929 its 216cotton mills and 26bleaching and dyeing works made it one of the largest and most productive centres of cotton spinning in the world. The British cotton industry declined sharply after the First World War, and by the 1980s cotton manufacture had virtually ceased in Bolton.
The town of Bolton was incorporated on June 24, 1738, following an influx of settlers. Town historian Esther Whitcomb, descendant of one of Bolton's earliest documented settlers, cites the recorded birth of a son, Hezekiah, to Josiah Whitcomb in 1681. By 1711, according to Whitcomb, more than 150 people were living on Bolton soil, despite a local history of Indian uprisings and one massacre. Many early houses were protected by flankers, and were designated as garrisons. Bolton's history is interesting because it is reflective of early settlement patterns in the central Massachusetts area, and the conflicts with King Philip (Metacom) and his Indian soldiers.
The town was formerly part of the town of Lancaster, but seceded along the Still River, where the current boundary line still stands.
The Connecticut River is the longest river in the New England region of the United States. Flowing roughly southward for 406.12 miles (653.59km) through four U.S. states, the Connecticut rises at the U.S. border with Quebec, Canada, and discharges at Long Island Sound. Its watershed encompasses five U.S. states and one Canadian province – 11,260 square miles (29,200km2) – via 148 tributaries, 38 of which are major rivers. Discharging at 19,600 cubic feet (560m3) per second, the Connecticut produces 70% of Long Island Sound's freshwater.
The Connecticut River Valley is home to some of the northeastern United States' most productive farmland, as well as a metropolitan region of approximately 2 million people surrounding Springfield, Massachusetts, and the state of Connecticut's capital, Hartford.
Etymology
The word "Connecticut" is a French corruption of the Mohegan word quinetucket, which means "beside the long, tidal river". The word "Connecticut" came into existence during the early 1600s, describing the river, which was also called simply "The Great River".

Factory Hollow, the lost settlement ~ Bolton, Ct.
Another fantastic fall day out in the deep woods of Ct. Today’s explore was about locating the lost mill hidden in what was once a hard working, thriving settlement founded in the late 1700’s. Remnants of old foundations and rock walls can be found in this once historic community. I love to imagine life as it was... simple yet a tough daily grind. Stepping back in time walking the long lost roads of yesterday and finding peace in discovery. Thanks for viewing and Happy Exploring 🍃

The town was originally settled in 1796, when Elijah Andrus led a group of persecuted Methodists out of Hartford to a quieter space along the Blackledge River where they hoped they would be left alone by the regional Congregationalists to live and worship as they pleased. Under the guidance of Rev. Henry Sumner, the faithful attended services twice a week, which included generous amounts of "spirits" in the hope of finding higher spirits. Apparently, such dedicated alcohol consumption caused a host of social issues, but the settlement still continued to thrive.
In 1811, a textile mill was built, and soon other mills, shops, homes and even a distillery followed. The town was soon known as Factory Hollow. It had its ups and downs over the next few decades. The main mill burned down twice, the second time in 1885 and the town never really recovered and was left abandoned.
According to one story from the Bolton Historical Society, it was claimed that the water in the settlement "ran uphill" from the pond to the mill, which spooked the residents.
Factory Hollow also suffered other problems, including two alleged murders, both of which pre-date the Civil War. According to David Philips' Legendary Connecticut.
