The area and park are named for the artillery batteries that were positioned there in the city's early years to protect the settlement behind them.Battery Park City was named after the area.
In 2015, the New York City Department of Parks and the Battery Conservancy announced that the park would revert to its historic name, The Battery.
History
The southern shoreline of Manhattan Island had long been known as "The Battery," and has been a popular promenade since the 17th century. At the time, an artillery battery there served as protection to the town. The Battery was the center of Evacuation Day celebrations commemorating the departure of the last British troops in the United States after the American Revolutionary War. Just prior to the War of 1812, the West Battery, later renamed Castle Clinton, was erected on a small artificial offshore island nearby, to replace the earlier batteries in the area; later, when the land of Battery Park was created, it encircled and incorporated the island.
The park was named for the artillery stationed there by American forces during the War of 1812. On August 13, 1813, American gunners, aided by the USSPresident, successfully defended their position against an attack by a British squadron led by Lt Colonel John Murray.
The park land was deeded to the City of Burlington in 1870, and the Battery Park Extension was added to the southern end in 1972.
Trivia
Because of its unobstructed view high above Burlingon's harbor, Battery Park is a very popular spot for observers of the Independence Day fireworks launched from a barge in the bay.
According to noted author Rudyard Kipling (The Jungle Book), Battery Park has one of the two finest sunset views in the world.
The Battery is a landmark defensive seawall and promenade in Charleston, South Carolina. Named for a civil-war coastal defense artillery battery at the site, it stretches along the lower shores of the Charleston peninsula, bordered by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, which meet here to form Charleston harbor. Historically, it has been understood to extend from the beginning of the seawall at the site of the former Omar Shrine Temple (40-44 East Bay Street) to the intersection of what is now Murray Boulevard and King Street. The higher part of the promenade, paralleling East Battery, as the street is known south of Water Street, to the intersection of Murray Boulevard, is known as High Battery. Fort Sumter is visible from the Cooper River side (High Battery) and from the point, as are Castle Pinckney, the World War IIaircraft carrierUSS Yorktown (CV-10), Fort Moultrie, and Sullivan's Island.
She gained attention in the early 1970s with short stories published in The Western Humanities Review, Ninth Letter, the Atlantic Monthly, and The New Yorker. Critics have praised her writing for its keen observations and dry, matter-of-fact irony which chronicle disillusionments of the upper-middle-class generation that grew up in the 1960s. In 1976, she published her first book of short stories, Distortions, and her first novel, Chilly Scenes of Winter, later made into a film.
Park City is a city in Summit County, Utah, United States. It is considered to be part of the Wasatch Back. The city is 32 miles (51km) southeast of downtown Salt Lake City and 19.88 miles (31.99km) from Salt Lake City's east edge of Sugar House along Interstate 80. The population was 7,558 at the 2010 census. On average, the tourist population greatly exceeds the number of permanent residents.
After a population decline following the shutdown of the area's mining industry, the city rebounded during the 1980s and 1990s through an expansion of its tourism business. The city currently brings in a yearly average of $529,800,000 to the Utah Economy as a tourist hot spot, $80,000,000 of which is attributed to the Sundance Film Festival. The city has two major ski resorts: Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain Resort. Both ski resorts were the major locations for ski and snowboarding events at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Although they receive less snow and have a shorter ski season than do their counterparts in Salt Lake County, such as Snowbird resort, they are much easier to access.

New York is a great city to visit. With its tall buildings and rich history, its the perfect place to witness various types of city design. One of my favorite is Battery Park, or "The Battery". Located at the southern tip of Manhattan, the park is a very calm and relaxing place to visit. But aside from its beauty, Battery Park is also a perfect example of reusing a space in a way thats different from its intention.
In this video I briefly discuss the history of Battery Park, and why its a must see for any New York Trip!

The tour begins from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and meanders through Battery Park. The park is built on landfill and was once the home of an artillery battery (hence the name). The battery was also home to New York's first immigration center, Castle Clinton, which was replaced by Ellis Island.
Today, most people visit to board the ferries to the Statue of Liberty.
However, many people miss the wonderful things you can explore in Battery Park, including landscaped gardens, statues, and memorials, as well as great people watching, street performers, and fearless squirrels.

Exploring NYC, Battery Park City, The Battery, Manhattan, Walking NYC, NYC Walking Tour, NYC Neighborhood, NYC Neighborhood Guide
In this video I explore the beautiful section in Lower Manhattan called Battery Park City. The neighborhood is composed of Battery Park also known as The Battery which is a beautiful park that goes next to Staten Island Terminal all the way to Tribeca. It has a waterfront where you can see Hudson River, Jersey City, Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. You can also catch NY Waterway Ferry in this park by Brookfield Place. Battery Park City is one of the newer areas in NYC and offers great views of the city, also the streets are very clean and impeccable. Hope you enjoy this video, stay tune for more.

Battery Park City is a mainly residential 92-acre (37 ha) planned community on the west side of the southern tip of the island of Manhattan in New York City. It is bounded by the Hudson River on the west, the Hudson River shoreline on the north and south, and the West Side Highway on the east. The neighborhood is named for Battery Park, located directly to the south.
More than one-third of the development is parkland. The land upon which it is built was created by land reclamation on the Hudson River using over 3 million cubic yards (2.3×106 m3) of soil and rock excavated during the construction of the World Trade Center, the New York City Water Tunnel, and certain other construction projects, as well as from sand dredged from New York Harbor off Staten Island. The neighborhood includes Brookfield Place (formerly the World Financial Center), along with numerous buildings designed for housing, commercial, and retail.
Battery Park City is part of Manhattan Community District 1. It is patrolled by the 1st Precinct of the New York City Police Department.

The southern shoreline of Manhattan Island had long been known as the Battery, and was a popular promenade since at least the 17th century. At the time, it served as protection to the town. The Battery was the center of Evacuation Day celebrations commemorating the departure of the last British troops in the United States after the American Revolutionary War. The relatively modern park was created by landfill during the 19th century, resulting in a landscaped open space at the foot of the heavily developed mainland of downtown.

It's been so long since you've been there And now it's time another day broken And misled tears is something I will never feel again I'm picking up my bits and pieces I will forget about your kisses I never said this would be easy But I'll just have to stay away Make believe I'm only human See the world through burnt out eyes I'm afraid we're just the new old Coming back for one last try It's been so long now since I've felt this way and now I am through it It's been so long now just another day let's just get to it.
