She gained attention in the early 1970s with short stories published in The Western Humanities Review, Ninth Letter, the Atlantic Monthly, and The New Yorker. Critics have praised her writing for its keen observations and dry, matter-of-fact irony which chronicle disillusionments of the upper-middle-class generation that grew up in the 1960s. In 1976, she published her first book of short stories, Distortions, and her first novel, Chilly Scenes of Winter, later made into a film.
Park City is a city in Summit County, Utah, United States. It is considered to be part of the Wasatch Back. The city is 32 miles (51km) southeast of downtown Salt Lake City and 19.88 miles (31.99km) from Salt Lake City's east edge of Sugar House along Interstate 80. The population was 7,558 at the 2010 census. On average, the tourist population greatly exceeds the number of permanent residents.
After a population decline following the shutdown of the area's mining industry, the city rebounded during the 1980s and 1990s through an expansion of its tourism business. The city currently brings in a yearly average of $529,800,000 to the Utah Economy as a tourist hot spot, $80,000,000 of which is attributed to the Sundance Film Festival. The city has two major ski resorts: Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain Resort. Both ski resorts were the major locations for ski and snowboarding events at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Although they receive less snow and have a shorter ski season than do their counterparts in Salt Lake County, such as Snowbird resort, they are much easier to access.
The area and park are named for the artillery batteries that were positioned there in the city's early years to protect the settlement behind them.Battery Park City was named after the area.
In 2015, the New York City Department of Parks and the Battery Conservancy announced that the park would revert to its historic name, The Battery.
History
The southern shoreline of Manhattan Island had long been known as "The Battery," and has been a popular promenade since the 17th century. At the time, an artillery battery there served as protection to the town. The Battery was the center of Evacuation Day celebrations commemorating the departure of the last British troops in the United States after the American Revolutionary War. Just prior to the War of 1812, the West Battery, later renamed Castle Clinton, was erected on a small artificial offshore island nearby, to replace the earlier batteries in the area; later, when the land of Battery Park was created, it encircled and incorporated the island.
The park was named for the artillery stationed there by American forces during the War of 1812. On August 13, 1813, American gunners, aided by the USSPresident, successfully defended their position against an attack by a British squadron led by Lt Colonel John Murray.
The park land was deeded to the City of Burlington in 1870, and the Battery Park Extension was added to the southern end in 1972.
Trivia
Because of its unobstructed view high above Burlingon's harbor, Battery Park is a very popular spot for observers of the Independence Day fireworks launched from a barge in the bay.
According to noted author Rudyard Kipling (The Jungle Book), Battery Park has one of the two finest sunset views in the world.
The Battery is a landmark defensive seawall and promenade in Charleston, South Carolina. Named for a civil-war coastal defense artillery battery at the site, it stretches along the lower shores of the Charleston peninsula, bordered by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, which meet here to form Charleston harbor. Historically, it has been understood to extend from the beginning of the seawall at the site of the former Omar Shrine Temple (40-44 East Bay Street) to the intersection of what is now Murray Boulevard and King Street. The higher part of the promenade, paralleling East Battery, as the street is known south of Water Street, to the intersection of Murray Boulevard, is known as High Battery. Fort Sumter is visible from the Cooper River side (High Battery) and from the point, as are Castle Pinckney, the World War IIaircraft carrierUSS Yorktown (CV-10), Fort Moultrie, and Sullivan's Island.
As a former American alpine ski racer, World Cup champion and Olympic athlete, Kaylin Richardson has a deep connection to the snow-blanketed mountainside, but her affection for Park City even goes beyond the slopes. This town's culture-enriched valley, scenery, food, art and right-out-your-front-door access to all-season adventure happily motivate her to be an advocate.
“Adventure should be a priority,” says Richardson. “We’re only guaranteed the present. So what I love to encourage people to do is to make it count. Those things that are on your bucket list, there’s no better time [to check them off] than the present.”
Richardson and a friend share many of their favorite Park City experiences to nudge you to add Park City to your list and go embrace the present.

One of the awesome activities to do in Park City is visiting the Deer Valley Resort, a top ski resort in the country that boasts over 100 ski runs, more than 20 chairlifts, and several dining outlets. Non-skiers can visit the nearby Kimball Art Center, which features exhibits by national and regional artists and offers over 300 classes in various visual arts.
For those who want to take a break from the slopes, a Guardsman Pass Scenic Drive is also one of the best things to do. It offers stunning views of the Wasatch Mountain Range and is a popular spot for wildlife viewing and hiking. Park City Mountain Resort is also home to the Alpine Coaster and Slide, offering a thrilling experience for the whole family.
If you're in search of a unique dining experience, check out the High West Distillery & Saloon, the only ski-in gastro saloon and distillery in the world. Another must-visit spot is the Utah Olympic Park, home to several events during the 2002 Winter Olympics and still an official training site for current and future Olympic athletes. Visitors can ride the signature Comet Bobsled or take a guided tour of the facility to learn about Utah's ski industry and the 2002 Olympic Games.
Whether you're visiting Park City for skiing, the food, or the scenery, there is no shortage of exciting activities to enjoy. With so much to see and do, you're sure to fall in love with the unique charm of this beautiful city.

Onlookers is an astute new story collection about people living in the same Southern town whose lives intersect in surprising ways. Peaceful Charlottesville, Virginia, drew national attention when white nationalists held a rally there in 2017, a horrific event whose repercussions are still felt today. Confederate monuments such as General Robert E. Lee atop his horse were then still standing. The statues are a constant presence and a metaphoric refrain throughout this collection, though they represent different things to different characters. Some landmarks may have faded from consciousness but provoke fresh outrage wh...

The Burning House by Ann Beattie | Short Story Tuesday
Today I'm talking about a short story that focuses on a dysfunctional family and friend group. Beattie writes about Amy as she throws a party for friends and family. Through this party, we learn about the growing rift that exists within this friend group and the loveless marriage she finds herself in. I like how Beattie writes about this dysfunction, but the story does feel bare bones at times. Maybe skip this one?

A magnificent new collection of linked stories from a multiple prize-winning master of the short form. The State We’re In, Ann Beattie’s first collection of new stories in a decade, is about how we live in the places we have chosen—or have been chosen by. It is about the stories we tell our families, our friends, and ourselves; the truths we may or may not see; how our affinities unite or repel us; and where we look for love.
Told through the voices of vivid and engaging women of all ages, The State We’re In explores their doubts and desires and reveals the unexpected moments and glancing epiphanies of daily life. Some of Beattie’s idiosyncratic and compelling characters have arrived in the coastal state by accident, while others are trying to escape. The collection is woven around Jocelyn, a wry, disaffected teenager living with her aunt and uncle for the summer, forging new friendships, avoiding her mother’s calls, taking writing classes, and encountering mortality for the first time. As in life, the narratives of other characters interrupt Jocelyn’s, sometimes challenging and sometimes embellishing her view.
Riveting, witty, sly, and bold, these stories describe a state of mind, a manner of being. A Beattie story, says Margaret Atwood, is “like a fresh bulletin from the front: we snatch it up, eager to know what’s happening out there on the edge of that shifting and dubious no-man’s-land known as interpersonal relations.” Beattie’s sentences, her insights, and her inimitable voice are mesmerizing.

Some landmarks may have faded from consciousness but provoke fresh outrage when viewed through newly opened eyes.
In "Nearby," an elderly man and his younger wife watch from their penthouse as protestors gather to oppose the once "heroic" explorers Lewis and Clark depicted towering over their native guide, Sacagawea. A lawyer in "In the Great Southern Tradition" deals with a crisis on Richmond's Monument Avenue, while his sister and nephew plant tulip bulbs at her stately home.
These are stories of unexpected relationships and affiliations that affirm the value of friendship, even when it requires difficult compromises or unexpected risks. Beattie involves the reader in questions about the nature of community, as the characters grapple with complicated inheritances that are both historical and personal and the realities of their lives interact uneasily with the past.
Ann Beattie has been included in five O. Henry Award Collections, in The Best American Short Stories and The Best American Short Stories of the Century. She is the recipient of the PEN/Malamud Award for achievement in the short story. In 2005, she received the Rea Award for the Short Story. The former Edgar Allan Poe Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Virginia, she is a member of The American Academy of Arts and Letters and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She and her husband, Lincoln Perry, live in Maine, Virginia, and Florida.

Best Things to Do in Park City, Utah
If you're an intermediate skier looking for a HUGE ski resort with ample blue terrain that will take more than a week to explore, then you're in the right place! Today, we're exploring Park City, the largest lift-serviced ski resort in the United States, known for its exceptional overall mountain experience and old-school mountain town charm. Nestled on the eastern side of the Wasatch Mountains, Park City is a paradise for riders of all levels. But today, it's all about the intermediates, who we believe make up the largest percentage of the skiing and snowboarding public.
We're going to tour the best intermediate terrain on both the Park City and Canyons sides of the resort, so strap yourself in — there's a LOT of terrain to explore! Remarkably, 41% of the 341 trails, that's 140 different trails, are graded blue for intermediates. That adds up to a whopping 105 kilometres or 65 miles of trails. We won't be covering every single trail, just our picks for the best intermediate terrain pods, the lifts that service these zones, and the standout trails.

PBS NewsHour Correspondent Jeffrey Brown is joined by Ann Beattie to discuss her latest book, “The State We’re In: Maine Stories” at the 2015 Miami Book Fair.
FROM THE PUBLISHER:
