WIA Episode 13 | BASILAN Part 1: A Reporter’s Homecoming (co-written by Ed Lingao and Gretchen Ho)
Located off the southern coast of the Zamboanga Peninsula, is the island province of Basilan. For most local and foreign travelers, this province does not usually make it to their travel list due to its reputation.
PART 1: BACK TO BASILAN
Basilan carries with it a heavy historical burden—a past marred by decades of conflict. The island has long been associated with war, crimes and kidnappings, shaping a negative image in mainstream media. However, recent developments have highlighted a surprising shift. According to the latest publication by the National Defense College of the Philippines, over a thousand extremists have chosen a path of surrender and reintegration into society since 2016.

In Part 1: Back to Basilan, we take a look at the scarred history of Basilan, through the lens of veteran conflict reporter Ed Lingao. After more than a decade, Ed returns with Team Woman In Action, surprised to find that the once muddy pathways he walked through, are now well-built concrete roads. If it took several days to get around Basilan before, today it just takes hours. If before, people disappeared from the streets as the sun went down, now the night bustles with economic activity.
How have rebels embraced their new lives as part of the peace process? What makes others reluctant to give up arms? To answer that question, we braved the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) camp in Al-Barka, to speak with Dan Asnawi, commander of the MILF 114th base command, where we witness rebel soldiers and government troops gamely play a round of voleyball. For the first time, visitors were also allowed to visit the site of a marine convoy that was ambushed in Albarka in 2007, notoriously putting AlBarka on the map in 2007.
At this site, the MILF rebel leader says Never Again, and Tourism, not Terrorism.
What was instrumental in breaking the apparent downward spiral of Basilan? What worked for Basilan, and what could work for other provinces scarred by war?
** Basilan Parts 1 & 2 are written by both Gretchen Ho and Ed Lingao with interspersing voices to give varying points of view and a proper side-by-side account of what Basilan was before, what it is now and where it seems to be headed.

📍Several waves of Negrito and ancient Chinese migration populated the Philippines. The Yakan people arrived in the area of the Sulu Archipelago, of which Basilan is a part, around 300 BCE to 200 BCE. Little is known of them before the era of Spanish colonization, but they still make up the largest ethnic group on the main island of Basilan.
As the Tausug Sultanate of Sulu grew in power, the Yakans withdrew inland, until most of the coastal communities along the island's southern, western and northwestern shores were primarily inhabited by Tausugs and their vassal tribes, the Samals and Bajaus (Tau-Laut). The only exception was the relatively prosperous Yakan communities of Lamitan.
Basilan first came to European attention when it was documented by the remnants of the Ferdinand Magellan expedition in 1521. It was eventually colonized by the Spanish as early as 1636 and was formally ceded by the Sulu Sultanate to Spain in 1726. The withdrawal of the Yakans inland was hastened by Spanish establishment of advance bases on the island's northwestern coast, bringing in Christianized 'indios' from Zamboanga, the Visayas and Luzon. By then, even the Yakan communities of Lamitan were completely overrun. Jesuit missionaries brought Catholicism to the region. Fighting with the Sultanate, the Dutch East India Company, Moro Pirates, and the French figured in Basilan's history over the years.
With its victory in the 1898 Spanish–American War, the United States gained possession of the Philippines. Americans proceeded to 'pacify' Basilan, cleared large expanses of land and established plantations, mainly to produce rubber and copra.
Following the Japanese occupation of the country during World War II, in 1946, the Philippines gained its independence. Beginning around 1970, heavy fighting broke out between the Philippine government and the Moro National Liberation Front, which was determined to secede and form a new country.
Then President Marcos made Basilan a province in 1973. It joined the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in 2001, the last province to do so. Its former capital, Isabela City, however, opted out and remains a part of the Zamboanga Peninsula Region (formerly Western Mindanao, Region 9)

I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE A BEAUTIFUL ISLAND PARADISE IN MALUSO, BASILAN... WITH AN AWESOME FILIPINO FAMILY!
On this day, I scooter to the Municipality of Maluso, and meet up with some locals and tourism staff. From there, we ride a boat and make our way to Kayumkuman Island. This Island is beautiful! With its local vibes, coconut trees, white sand and corals... The only thing that was more beautiful? The awesome Filipino family and friends that I was with! Such wonderful vibes in Basilan!
Oh... and the coconut beach barbecue was absolutely classic!! Proper local Filipino beach cooking!
A wonderful Family day on an island paradise in Maluso, Basilan. I am so stoked for the future hear... #MARAYAWMALUSO!
