Basilan is home to three main ethnic groups, the indigenous Yakans, and the later-arriving Tausugs and Zamboangueño. The Yakans and Tausugs are predominantly Muslim, while the Zamboangueño are mainly Christian. There are also a number of smaller groups. Although the official language is English, the major language is Yakan and lingua franca is Zamboangueño Chavacano, but other languages are well represented, including Tausug and Samal.
Basilan, although classified as a 3rd-Class Province in terms of gross provincial income, has one of the lowest incidence of poverty in the Philippines (26.19% of the general population), ranked 20 among the Philippines' 80 provinces (in comparison, Maguindanao which is ranked last at number 80 has a poverty incidence of 44.24%). The gap between Basilan's rich and poor residents are among the narrowest in the country (ranked 3rd nationwide), pointing to one of the most equitable distributions of wealth anywhere in the country (GINI Coefficient 0.2826, which is slightly better than the Provinces of Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Cavite, Batanes and Batangas).
The Yakan people are among the major indigenous Muslim Filipino ethnolinguistics groups in the Sulu archipelago. Having a significant number of followers of Islam, it is considered as one of the 13 Moro groups in the Philippines. The Yakans mainly reside in Basilan but are also in Zamboanga City. They speak a language known as Bahasa Yakan, which has characteristics of both Sama-BajauSinama and Tausug (Jundam 1983: 7-8). It is written in the Malayan Arabic script, with adaptations to sounds not present in Arabic (Sherfan 1976).
History
The Yakans reside in the Sulu Archipelago, situated to the west of Zamboanga in Mindanao. Traditionally they wear colorful, handwoven clothes. The women wear tightfitting short blouses and both sexes wear narrowcut pants resembling breeches. The women covers it partly with a wrap-around material while the man wraps a sash-like cloth around the waist where he places his weapon – usually a long knife.
Nowadays most Yakans wear western clothes and use their traditional clothes only for cultural festivals.
Exploring Basilan Philippines (Best Food and Beaches)
Basilan is a beautiful province located in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). It is surrounded by the beautiful Celebes Sea and the beaches are out of this world. We visited the former capital of Basilan, Isabela City, to know more about the people and of course, the food. It is considered a melting pot of people coming from different cultures and backgrounds so we are in for a gastronomic treat!
Erwan Heussaff is back in the islands and he’s sharing the untold secrets of this area of the Philippines. What will he unravel during this visit? Watch until the end of this first of a two-part travel guide to Basilan NOW!

Life In BASILAN In 2023 (30 Hours In Isabela City)
LIFE IN BASILAN - I'M BACK ONE YEAR LATER.
I first came here last June, and loved it so much that I came back a month later.
This time around, I spent one and a half days trying to really understand how life is in 2023, with lots of different explorations around Isabela City, the island's largest.
From Marang-Marang, whose women's association is rapidly developing with a new floating cottage and a thriving weaving industry, to the former JW Strong/American Rubber/BF Goodrich rubber plantation in Barangay Baluno that's now under a cooperative, to seeing old friends on the boulevard, to Isabela City's public market on bagsakan day (products are brought from the nearby mountains to the city every Sunday) to a local-style lunch on Block 4 beach - these were such great experiences.

WIA Episode 13 | BASILAN Part 1: A Reporter’s Homecoming (co-written by Ed Lingao and Gretchen Ho)
Located off the southern coast of the Zamboanga Peninsula, is the island province of Basilan. For most local and foreign travelers, this province does not usually make it to their travel list due to its reputation.
PART 1: BACK TO BASILAN
Basilan carries with it a heavy historical burden—a past marred by decades of conflict. The island has long been associated with war, crimes and kidnappings, shaping a negative image in mainstream media. However, recent developments have highlighted a surprising shift. According to the latest publication by the National Defense College of the Philippines, over a thousand extremists have chosen a path of surrender and reintegration into society since 2016.

Is it SAFE to visit BASILAN?
My last day on Basilan was by far the most interesting. I visited a Bajau Village on the sea and meet with a Senior Police Officer to discuss the safety and security situation on Basilan now. And, of course, I had something interesting to eat.

PHILIPPINES CLEANEST MARKET is in BASILAN? Exploring Isabela City With Tourism
IS THE PHILIPPINES CLEANEST WET MARKET IN ISABELA CITY BASILAN?
Maybe!?
This video is a raw look at some city life here in Isabela de Basilan. I start by visiting the market... and get shocked at how freaking nice and clean it is!! Also, the vibes with the locals were awesome! From there, we go to a new and modern coffeeshop in a rural area up top of the city... "Sabores". I loved the vibes, coffee, sikwate, and setup!! Definitely a must visit in Isabela!
After spending time exploring with the Isabela City Tourism team and my Yakan friends... I spent a rainy morning alone in the city.
And well...
It was beautiful and inspiring!
This is exploring Isabela City in Basilan... and its super clean market!

Isabela City - I love its diversity, its vibrancy, and its openness.

In Part 1: Back to Basilan, we take a look at the scarred history of Basilan, through the lens of veteran conflict reporter Ed Lingao. After more than a decade, Ed returns with Team Woman In Action, surprised to find that the once muddy pathways he walked through, are now well-built concrete roads. If it took several days to get around Basilan before, today it just takes hours. If before, people disappeared from the streets as the sun went down, now the night bustles with economic activity.
How have rebels embraced their new lives as part of the peace process? What makes others reluctant to give up arms? To answer that question, we braved the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) camp in Al-Barka, to speak with Dan Asnawi, commander of the MILF 114th base command, where we witness rebel soldiers and government troops gamely play a round of voleyball. For the first time, visitors were also allowed to visit the site of a marine convoy that was ambushed in Albarka in 2007, notoriously putting AlBarka on the map in 2007.
At this site, the MILF rebel leader says Never Again, and Tourism, not Terrorism.
What was instrumental in breaking the apparent downward spiral of Basilan? What worked for Basilan, and what could work for other provinces scarred by war?
** Basilan Parts 1 & 2 are written by both Gretchen Ho and Ed Lingao with interspersing voices to give varying points of view and a proper side-by-side account of what Basilan was before, what it is now and where it seems to be headed.

Welcome to Lampinigan Island!!
Usually it takes about a 45 minute local boat ride, but because of stormy weather... we took a speed boat! Zooming through the "EDSA of Isabela", I found myself at this stunning white sand and turquoise water paradise island! Swimming here and running along the sand is truly something you will remember!
Isabela City is home to many beautiful islands and local communities. If you are in Zamboanga City and want to take a day trip...

For those who would like to visit the city, you may get in touch with the local government office:

We continue our adventures in Basilan with Erwan Heussaff and explore the majestic beaches and meet the most generous locals on the island. We learned about artisans who are masters of their craft—from boatmaking, to cooking handmade delicacies like “Patulakan” and freshly made Yakan specialties like “Jah” and “Panyam.” This is an epic food trip that will surely make you book that flight!
This is the second installment out of our two-part travel guide to Basilan that hopefully shines a light on how Basilan is trying to leave the shadows of the past behind as they share a glimpse of their own version of paradise.

Isabela City - I love its diversity, its vibrancy, and its openness.
*** I STILL RECOMMEND YOU COORDINATE WITH THE ISABELA CITY TOURISM OFFICE BEFORE COMING HERE. CONTACT THEM ON FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/isabelacitytourism/

THERE IS A PARADISE ISLAND IN ISABELA DE BASILAN...
JUST CONTACT THE TOURISM OFFICE: https://www.facebook.com/isabelacitytourism
Oh, and don't be surprised if you find giant lobsters during your adventures in Basilan... this place is known for its seafood!
