Excavating Cuneiform Tablets in Iraq with the Girsu Project | Curator's Corner S8 Ep3
The British Museum is currently excavating at the ancient Sumerian city of Girsu, in Southern Iraq. However, most of the Girsu Project's time has been spent, not so much excavating the ancient city itself, but excavating through the spoil heaps (piles of dirt) left behind by French archaeologist over 80 years ago. Within these great mounds of dirt are countless objects, including cuneiform tablets, that were abandoned, and that are currently at risk of being lost forever due to erosion of those spoil heaps.
The Girsu Project is a joint initiative to save endangered heritage sites led by the British Museum, the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage (SBAH) of Iraq, and the J. Paul Getty Trust.

With talk of peace, Fouad Hady returns home to Baghdad to see how life has changed. He finds Karrada, a once affluent and peaceful district, plagued by power cuts and the constant threat of attack.
Being close to the Green Zone and home to politicians, Karradas become a target for insurgents. Karrada was really safe before
but not now. I go out thinking theres a car bomb...its scary, tells Hanan, a local artist. Shes terrified to leave her home, after a shell hit her house and killed her friends children. Street sellers are the most at risk from insurgents, yet since the US invasion, more people have taken to Karradas streets trying anything to make a living. If you go out in the morning you dont know if you will return in the afternoon. The people Fouad films show how painful life is for ordinary Iraqis, from the mother mourning her Iraqi soldier son killed by the US army, to the generator repair man who wont charge for his work. Some say things are getting better in Baghdad. But after two weeks in Karrada I'm not so sure.

Also on Saturday, six unidentified assailants attacked a four-member police patrol in the town, killing one officer and seriously wounding one other, police said.
In a third incident, a car bomb targeting a U-S military convoy destroyed a civilian car and injured its driver in Khalis, near Baqoubah, 65 kilometres (41 miles) north of Baghdad.
An Iraqi driver injured in the attack said two military vehicles were damaged.
It was not clear if any Americans suffered casualties.
A U-S official in Baghdad could not confirm the bombing and witnesses said U-S forces blocked off the area after the attack.

STORYLINE:
Two blasts hit the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Monday, the second of which struck a crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene of the first blast.
The twin blasts - the deadliest in Baghdad in months - occurred moments apart during the morning rush hour in the mostly Shiite Kasrah section of the Azamiyah district in the northern part of the Iraqi capital.
Police said the first explosion damaged a minibus carrying young girls to school.
The second happened when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive belt in the middle of a crowd that had gathered around the vehicle.
Both blasts killed at least 28 people and wounded 68 others, officials said.
An eyewitness told AP Television he also heard a third explosion but wasn't sure where it had come from.
Police officials giving the toll were unclear how many had died in each blast.
The Interior Ministry, which controls the police, gave the casualty figure of 28 dead and 68 wounded.
A check of four hospitals in the Baghdad area indicated 29 were killed, and hospital officials said some of the wounded were in critical condition.
The blasts shattered storefronts along the crowded street and set more than a dozen cars on fire.
The minibus was pocked with shrapnel marks and the floor was soaked in blood.
Girls' shoes were scattered about amid the wreckage.
Violence is down significantly in Baghdad since the worst of the Sunni-Shiite fighting in 2006 and 2007.
Police said the dead were two women and a 10-year-old girl.
