Auckland Grammar School is a state secondary school for years 9 to 13 boys in Auckland, New Zealand. It has a roll of 2510as of November 2015, including a number of boarders who live in nearby Tibbs' House, making it New Zealand's largest single-sex school and placing it among the six largest schools in the country.
Grammar regards itself as the pre-eminent academic secondary school in New Zealand. The local publication Metro claimed that "Grammar's results in the Cambridge system are comparable with most private schools, and it scores extremely well in Scholarship too".
History
The school was established in 1850 by the then Governor-in-Chief, Sir George Grey, and was officially recognised as an educational establishment in 1868 through the Auckland Grammar School Appropriation Act. The school was initially privately funded, as New Zealand did not have a state education system until 1877.
Auckland Grammar School buildings contain two Category I historic places, the school's main block and a war memorial. An obelisk located in front of the school commemorates former students who fought in various wars. The school's main block, built in 1916 in the "Spanish Mission" style, is used for daily assemblies, exhibitions, and contains various classrooms. Surrounding the main hall in which the daily assembly is held are the school honours boards listing the names of the school's top scholars including Rhodes Scholars and Girdlers Scholars.
A grammar school is one of several different types of school in the history of education in the United Kingdom and other English-speaking countries, originally a school teaching classical languages but more recently an academically oriented secondary school.
The original purpose of medieval grammar schools was the teaching of Latin. Over time the curriculum was broadened, first to include Ancient Greek, and later English and other European languages, natural sciences, mathematics, history, geography, and other subjects. In the late Victorian era grammar schools were reorganised to provide secondary education throughout England and Wales; Scotland had developed a different system. Grammar schools of these types were also established in British territories overseas, where they have evolved in different ways.
Grammar schools became the selective tier of the Tripartite System of state-funded secondary education operating in England and Wales from the mid-1940s to the late 1960s and continuing in Northern Ireland. With the move to non-selective comprehensive schools in the 1960s and 1970s, some grammar schools became fully independent and charged fees, while most others were abolished or became comprehensive (or sometimes merged with a secondary modern to form a new comprehensive school). In both cases, many of these schools kept "grammar school" in their names. More recently, a number of state grammar schools still retaining their selective intake gained academy status, meaning that they are independent of the LEA. Some parts of England retain forms of the Tripartite System, and a few grammar schools survive in otherwise comprehensive areas. Some of the remaining grammar schools can trace their histories to before the 16th century.
Public School 9, originally known as Grammar School 9, then later the John Jasper School and currently the Mickey Mantle School, is a historic school building at 466 West End Avenue at West 82nd Street in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It was built in 1894-96, and was designed by C. B. J. Snyder, the Superintendent of School Buildings.
The school that became P.S. 9 was originally organized by the vestry of Saint Michael's Church (Episcopal) in the early 19th century. The vestry continued to operate the school in the Bloomingdale area until a law was enacted November 19, 1824 which barred church schools from receiving public school funding. On May 22, 1826, the Public School Society of New York acquired it; and, in July 1827, the Society paid $250 for a 100x100 foot tract at 82nd Street between 10th (Amsterdam) and 11th (West End) Avenues. On July 19, 1830, the Society completed the construction of a one-story clapboard school at 466 West End Avenue for $1,500, accommodating about 50 children. The Society transferred jurisdiction of the school to the Board of Education in July 1853.
Auckland (/ˈɔːklənd/AWK-lənd), in the North Island of New Zealand, is the largest and most populous urban area in the country. Auckland has a population of 1,454,300, 32 percent of New Zealand's population. It is part of the wider Auckland Region, which includes the rural areas and towns north and south of the urban area, plus the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, resulting in a total population of 1,570,500 that is governed by the Auckland Council. Auckland also has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world. In Māori, Auckland's name is Tāmaki Makaurau and the transliterated version of Auckland is Ākarana.
The Auckland urban area (as defined by Statistics New Zealand) ranges to Waiwera in the north, Kumeu in the northwest, and Runciman in the south. It is not contiguous; the section from Waiwera to Whangaparaoa Peninsula is separate from its nearest neighbouring suburb of Long Bay. Auckland lies between the Hauraki Gulf of the Pacific Ocean to the east, the low Hunua Ranges to the south-east, the Manukau Harbour to the south-west, and the Waitakere Ranges and smaller ranges to the west and north-west. The central part of the urban area occupies a narrow isthmus between the Manukau Harbour on the Tasman Sea and the Waitemata Harbour on the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the few cities in the world to have two harbours on two separate major bodies of water.
Auckland (or, more formally, City of Auckland) was a New Zealand electorate. It covered the core of Auckland during the early days of New Zealand democracy, when the city was small enough to be covered by two or three seats.
Population centres
The City of Auckland electorate was one of the original electorates, and was used in the country's first elections. It covered a territory roughly corresponding to the central business district of the city today, and was surrounded by another electorate called Auckland Suburbs. As the city was growing rapidly, however, the electorate did not last long — in the 1860 elections, it was divided into Auckland East and Auckland West.

It’s worth noting though that there is also still strong support for grammar schools in many areas of the UK.
Over time, Grammar schools have gone through many changes in their structure and purpose. In the past, they were considered very exclusive institutions, reserved for the wealthy and privileged. Today, they are a bit more accessible to a wider part of the population, though they’re still not without controversy as we’ve already seen. Grammar schools often use selective entry criteria such as the 11+ exam or interviews to decide which students get a place. There are just over 160 grammar schools currently in England, and almost 70 in Northern Ireland, but there are no state funded grammar schools in Wales or Scotland.
So, that’s a brief history of Grammar schools in the UK. From their origins as Latin schools to their modern-day emphasis on academics, they have played an important role in shaping the UK’s education system and producing some of its most influential figures. Around the 1940s, with the introduction of the Tripartite System of Education, grammar schools became one of the three tiers of state-funded schools - the other two being technical schools and secondary modern schools. Grammar schools took on the role of the prestigious institutions that many students wanted to get into. This is because they were funded extremely well and provided a great pathway to going to university.
Since the 1960s, the number of Grammar schools has declined, with many often being replaced by modern comprehensives. Grammar schools have in recent years been controversial because some people believe they are unfairly funded and offer better opportunities to their students than other state funded schools. In 1998, a law was passed in the UK preventing the creation of any new grammar schools, but still allowing existing ones to expand. It’s worth noting though that there is also still strong support for grammar schools in many areas of the UK.
Over time, Grammar schools have gone through many changes in their structure and purpose. In the past, they were considered very exclusive institutions, reserved for the wealthy and privileged. Today, they are a bit more accessible to a wider part of the population, though they’re still not without controversy as we’ve already seen. Grammar schools often use selective entry criteria such as the 11+ exam or interviews to decide which students get a place. There are just over 160 grammar schools currently in England, and almost 70 in Northern Ireland, but there are no state funded grammar schools in Wales or Scotland.

From their origins as Latin schools to their modern-day emphasis on academics, they have played an important role in shaping the UK’s education system and producing some of its most influential figures. Auckland Grammar School is a state secondary school for years 9 to 13 boys in Auckland, New Zealand. It has a roll of 2510as of November 2015, including a number of boarders who live in nearby Tibbs' House, making it New Zealand's largest single-sex school and placing it among the six largest schools in the country.
Grammar regards itself as the pre-eminent academic secondary school in New Zealand. The local publication Metro claimed that "Grammar's results in the Cambridge system are comparable with most private schools, and it scores extremely well in Scholarship too".
History
The school was established in 1850 by the then Governor-in-Chief, Sir George Grey, and was officially recognised as an educational establishment in 1868 through the Auckland Grammar School Appropriation Act. The school was initially privately funded, as New Zealand did not have a state education system until 1877.
Auckland Grammar School buildings contain two Category I historic places, the school's main block and a war memorial. An obelisk located in front of the school commemorates former students who fought in various wars. The school's main block, built in 1916 in the "Spanish Mission" style, is used for daily assemblies, exhibitions, and contains various classrooms. Surrounding the main hall in which the daily assembly is held are the school honours boards listing the names of the school's top scholars including Rhodes Scholars and Girdlers Scholars.
The programme was launched in Auckland at Mt AlbertGrammarSchool on Wednesday where 60 girls and 15 coaches ran some drills with players from the Tokomanawa Queens and the national champion NorthernKahu.
Rock climbers have been working to reopen access to AucklandGrammarSchool Rockwall after the school adopted a zero-risk policy when the legislation came into affect in 2015... Auckland Grammar School has also been approached for comment.

In an interview with Newstalk ZB, AucklandGrammar headmaster Tim O’Connor said that while he backed each school in making their own choices, his view was that students needed to show up to class, in person, five days a week.
