The Army War College (Turkish:Kara Harp Akademisi), is an academic institution of the Turkish Armed Forces. It is sometimes referred to in English as the Turkish Military College.
Supported by influential pro-German ministers and army officers, the Army War College was modeled after the PrussianPreußische Kriegsakademie, with German officers hired as Oyatoi gaikokujin to provide training. The most prominent of these instructors was Major Klemens W.J. Meckel. He was influential in assisting in the reorganization of the standing army from a garrison-based system into a divisional system.
Reporting directly to the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff Headquarters, the college specialized initially in teaching tactics, and was regarded as the pinnacle of the Army educational system. For this reason, it accepted only previous graduates of the Imperial Japanese Army Academy who had at least two years (but not more than six years) of field experience as a lieutenant as its students, and who had typically achieved the rank of captain. Each class had from 30-35 students. Learning tended to be by rote memorization, with little encouragement for creative thinking or discussion among the students. The curriculum was a three-year course, and was considered a necessary prerequisite for future promotion to a staff rank (i.e. that of general). Each year, the six graduates with the best marks are each awarded with an Army Sword by the Emperor and are collectively known as the Army Sword Club.
A War College is a senior military academy which is normally intended for veteran military officers and whose purpose is to educate and 'train on' senior military tacticians, strategists, and leaders. It is also often the place where advanced tactical and strategic thought is conducted, both for the purpose of developing doctrine and for the purpose of identifying implications and shifts in long-term patterns.
The Salvation Army War College was established in 2003 by Founders Majors Stephen Court and Danielle Strickland, along with Pioneers Captains Ruth and Ian Gillingham. The War College began in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and is still its longest running campus. In 2006 a War College campus was opened in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA by Death and Glory Alumni Heather and Rob Dolby and in 2008 another in ChicagoIllinois, USA by Envoys Jen and Josh Polanco. The Vancouver campus is led by Training Principal Nicole Brindle.

In Vancouver, students live primarily in The Empress Hotel, a 77 unit slum hotel at the Main and Hastings intersection in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. The Downtown Eastside of Vancouver is known for its addiction, poverty and prostitution rates. Students who attend The War College identify themselves with the poor and immerse themselves in the neighbourhood.
