30 Minutes of Relaxing Ancient Greek Music
Music by Farya Faraji. Some original compositions by me, and also includes an improv on the Song of Seikilos from Ancient Greece. Please note that except for the Song of Seikilos at the end, these aren't actual pieces from Ancient Greece but original compositions I made in the style of the era's music; so take the historical accuracy with a grain of salt. The instruments are all from Ancient Greece, but I played certain melodies that wouldn't have existed back then, as well as employed harmony and triads that didn't exist. Still, this should give a general idea as to the sound and feel of Ancient Greek music, but not a hyper accurate one.

Hymn to the Muse - Ancient Greek Song
Lyrics & music by Mesomedes of Crete (disputed by some), arrangement & vocals by Farya Faraji. Many thanks to Luke Ranieri of the polýMATHY and ScorpioMartianus channels for helping out with the pronunciation.
This is one of the few preserved songs written down in Antiquity, during the Roman Imperial rule. It is generally attributed to Mesomedes of Crete, a 2nd century Greek musician who left us with an array of compositions, who, for a long time, were the only known compositions from Antiquity, before the discovery of other ones like the Epitaph of Seikilos. This song being Mesomedes’ is, however disputed by J.G. Landels, who points out how this particular composition stands out in style from the rest of Mesomedes’ works, especially due to the use of Ionian, rather than Doric dialect.

Music by Farya Faraji. This is not only a follow up to the 30 minute of music I uploaded two years ago, this one being entirely historically accurate compared to the previous one which took some liberties for entertainment purposes, but more importantly, this will now serve as the main resource for the sound of the Ancient Greek genera (types of melodies or modes) that I will discuss in my different educational videos, and this video will serve as a permanent resource that can be consulted at any time for audio examples of the different Ancient Greek genera.
All the music heard here is simply improvisations in all of the main, attested modes of Ancient Greek music as given to us by Aristoxenus in the Hellenistic Era, using period instruments. The first improvisations are in the diatonic genus, then follows the enharmonic genus, followed finally by the chromatic genus, most tuned using Pythagorean ratios, although Equal Temperament had to be used at certain points for convenience’s sake. Each improvisation is demarcated from the others with the name of the mode, its genus, and the instruments used. Other than serving as relaxing music, this video will hopefully introduce many to the general melodic, modal and tetrachordal soundscape of Ancient Greek music.

The Theoretical System of Ancient Greek Music has been rescued. We can draw information about the instruments that Ancient Greeks used from various sources such as vase paintings, statues, reliefs, mosaics, etc. as well as from writers such as Aristoxenos and Cleonidis. Through these sources we can deduce a lot about Ancient Greeks’ musical education. Many researchers from around the world have attempted to interpret the few play samples that have been rescued but it is true that each and every one of us, using our imagination, we can travel back in time and hear this music in our own way!
Plato, Aristotle and other philosophers move one step further and form the theories of ethics and theories of music ethics that look at the influence of music over the emotions and the mentality of humans. According to music ethics, every rhythmic and melodic move has an emotional countermove. Therefore, music may affect a person in a positive way or in a negative way.
However, ethics do not rely solely on general findings but also in the aesthetic exploration of the structural parameters of music by examining the ethos of melody, harmonies (tropical classifications), genus and rhythms.

The arrangement is meant to be historically accurate, and follows the heterophonic/monophonic logic of Ancient Greek music, where a single musical line exists without any counterpoint or harmony (independent melodic structures occurring simultaneously with the lead melody). The instrumentation consists of ancient lyres, aulos, drums and ancient cymbals. The melody is interesting in that it shows a copious use of chromaticism, something that will remain integral to later Greek music, including Byzantine chant of the Middle-Ages, as well as modern Greek music.
The pronunciation system used is the Samosatene variant of the Lucian pronunciation, a pronunciation system devised by Raphael Turrigiano & Luke Ranieri which strives to be an optimal pronunciation system for Ancient Greek, mostly for the Koine Greek of the era of Roman rule. Given that it was devised around the era of the 2nd century, I believed it to be the most applicable pronunciation system as Mesomedes himself lived around that time period. Of course, the pronunciations would have varied immensely across regions and dialects, as represented by the many variants of Lucian, but for the sake of convenience, I chose to go with Samosatene. A more in depth explanation of the phonological system can be found in this introductory video by Ranieri and Turrigiano which I highly recommend you check out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt9z5Gvp3MM
The clip was filmed in the Peloponnese and the Cycladic island of Sifnos.
English translation:
Sing to me, kind Muse,
and begin my song.
Send a breeze from your groves
to stir my mind.

Pausa is actually a necessary element for every kind of communication of verbal, artistic, stochastic music. With both philosophical and literal dimensions, friendship, love, time, life itself become ill at the moment when the internal dialogue ceases and in the space that is created all becomes One.
🎙️ Who is Rui Fu?
Rui Fu is a singer-songwriter who specializes in improvisational and impressionistic interpretation of Chinese ethnic musical traditions and modernist portrayals of ancient Taoist meditative musics.
