Colonies in antiquity were city-states founded from a mother-city (its "metropolis"), not from a territory-at-large. Bonds between a colony and its metropolis remained often close, and took specific forms. However, unlike in the period of European colonialism during the early and late modern era, ancient colonies were usually sovereign and self-governing from their inception.
In this episode, we'll take a quick look at the Greek colonization of the ancient Mediterranean and Black Sea regions. In addition to exploring the reasons as to why so many Greek-speaking peoples left their homeland , we'll also get to learn more about the history of some well-known Greek colonies including Cumae, Cyrene, Massalia and others.

SUMMARY
=======
Colonies in antiquity were city-states founded from a mother-city (its "metropolis"), not from a territory-at-large. Bonds between a colony and its metropolis remained often close, and took specific forms. In general, colonies founded by Carthage, Rome, Alexander the Great and his successors remained tied to their metropolis, but Greek colonies of the Archaic and Classical eras were sovereign and self-governing from their inception. While Greek colonies were often founded to solve social unrest in the mother-city, by expelling a part of the population, Hellenistic, Roman, and Carthaginian colonies were used for empire-building.

Some of the world’s greatest cultural and historical treasures are housed in London’s British Museum, and a significant number of them were taken during Britain’s centuries-long imperial rule. In recent years, many of the countries missing their cultural heritage have been asking for some of these items back.
Benin City in Nigeria is one of those places. They've been calling for the return of the Benin Bronzes, hundreds of artifacts looted in 1897 when British soldiers embarked a punitive expedition to Benin. Many are now housed in the British Museum.
And it's just the beginning. As the world reckons with the damage inflicted during Europe’s colonial global takeover, the calls for these items to be returned are getting louder and louder.
To dig deeper into the 1897 Benin Punitive Expedition and the Benin Bronzes check out this book by Staffan Lunden:

Colonies in antiquity
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======

We've rid ourselves of the monsters sleeping under our beds, but wake up screaming out of reach, something familiar. While we're sleeping, breathing, walls creak. We're there in nightmares, among half-thoughts. In cracked mirrors, there lie fragments of bedtime stories and dog-eared photographs. We're unfamiliar now with this place we used to call home. Faces obscured, foreign. But I know you. At least, I knew you then. Beds are cold new, and I'm still convinced that there are ghosts in my closet. I know they're in yours. The scariest part is in what we didn't say. All these years passed, are we still the same?
These changes come against the backdrop of Indian Prime MinisterNarendra Modi calling for “erasing colonial customs and adopting Indian ways in the armed forces.” ... colonial-era practices.
The Indian navy announced on Friday that its personnel will no longer carry ceremonial batons, following Prime MinisterNarendra Modi’s call to abandon colonial practices in the armed forces.
