Archanes (Greek:Αρχάνες, Godart & Olivier abbreviation: ARKH) is a former municipality in the Heraklion regional unit, Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Archanes-Asterousia, of which it is a municipal unit. Population 4,548 (2001). It is also the archaeological site of an ancient Minoansettlement in central Crete. The discovery of ancient roads leading from Archanes to Juktas, Anemospilia, Xeri Kara and Vathypetro indicate that Archanes was an important hub in the region during Minoan times. Archaeological evidence indicates that ancient Archanes spread out over the same area as the modern town of Archanes.
Archaeology
In 1912, Xanthoudides noted the importance of Archanes, but Sir Arthur Evans was the first to characterize the site as palatial, declaring that Archanes was likely a Summer Palace for the Knossos kings. Spyridon Marinatos and N. Platon excavated minor areas in the region, but nothing supported Evans' theory. In 1964, Yannis Sakellarakis dug trial trenches at the Tourkoyeitonia site and uncovered the first evidence of a palace site. Since 1966, Archanes has been excavated by the Greek Archaeological Society under the supervision of John Sakellarakis and Efi Sapouna-Sakellarakis.

Adventure day to Archanes village in Crete
We took the local bus to the intercity bus station in Heraklion then the 9am bus to Archanes. About a 30min ride. We found the trail up the mountain about 15mins walk from the bus stop. A nice steep ascent found us at the top quickly with awesome views of the village, mountains and sea. We saw several huge Vultures circling the small mountain at night speeds! Take your time exploring the rocks and the church. You can just drive up to the top if your not a hiker 😅 Steve found a loop walk to take us back to town on the Wikiloc app. We saw a herd of wild goats, assuming they are wild as the had no bells?
All in all an easy hike with great views and a lovely village, and a bonus to take the bus and not need a car 👍

What we are witnessing today is a struggle between the end of an old era And the beginning of a new one We are walking the path of extinction This pain and fear can seem unfair, it's beyond our limitations The earth will put an end to us, and this is reality What's happening to us is what we deserve We mmust fight the earth that gave us birth Human kind has engaged its self-destruction Wandering the burning land The only thing you will choose is how you'll face the end The most ironic place to be, is just right here Many people will die in fear, others in serenity Where will you be What will you do When they will come for you You better it's on this way Right this way Every day that passes, life force is taken back No matter if we try or not, we'll totally fade away As the world falls around us We remain still and silent Following the greedy nature of man
