13:19 - III. Notturno (Nocturne): Andante in A major and 3/4 time
22:03 - IV. Finale: Andante — Vivace in D major and 2/4 time
Borodin's String Quartet No. 2 in D major differs from many of the composer's other works in two ways: it was completed quickly, during August 1881, and it lacks a published program. These two factors may be related; Borodin dedicated the quartet to his wife Ekaterina, and it was written as an evocation of when they met and fell in love in Heidelberg 20 years earlier. The composer seems to have represented himself in this quartet with the cello (he was an amateur player), while Ekaterina is portrayed by the first violin. Each of the movements is warm and blissful, the whole suggesting the depiction of a growing, deepening love.
- The first movement opens with a sweet, sighing melody, traded between first violin and cello in an almost conversational manner. Borodin and Ekaterina dominate the rest of the movement with a beguiling discourse; even the development brings effortless, serene reshapings of the exposition's melodies, and the luminous coda rounds out the movement nicely.
- A Scherzo, written in a free sonata form, follows. The light first subject skips along gracefully, while the second subject is reminiscent of a waltz; both are gentle dances, gently handled. The development is in more decisive duple rhythm, but the recapitulation soon brings back the triple rhythm and its attendant character.
- Borodin and Ekaterina reappear in the famous Nocturne which follows. Over a luminous gauze of accompaniment from the second violin and viola, the cello introduces a long, tender, ardent melody marked cantabile ed espressivo. This melody soon passes to the first violin, which plays it over commentary from the cello. A more decisive second theme enters on both instruments, which develop it before playing the first theme in an intimate canon. The first theme lingers until the end of the movement, when in a long coda it ascends until the violin and cello play it together in a silvery thread of tone.
- The finale begins with an Andante introduction, as if unwilling to come down from the emotional heights of the previous movement, soon leading into a quicksilver, energetic Vivace, whose long coda provides a fittingly joyous conclusion to the entire work.
As love letters go, Borodin's String Quartet No. 2 is unsurpassed; as string quartets go, it is deservedly loved.

Welcome to Central Asia and the Caucasus, two beautiful regions on the crossroads of Asia and Europe. Often overlooked as travel destinations, the countries here provide some of the most rewarding and unique experiences. From stunning mountain landscapes of the Pamir Highway to historic monasteries in Armenia, from spectacular monuments along the ancient Silk Road to the modern skylines of Baku and Astana.
I traveled through these regions for four months in 2013, and in this short travel documentary I share with you my personal top 10 places to visit. The countries included in the video are Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

Journey Through Central Asia - Travel Documentary
Central Asia is one of the world’s most mysterious and fascinating travel destinations. This region of deserts, grasslands, and mountain ranges has long attracted Silk Road traders, nomadic explorers, and invaders, bridging Asia with Europe. Today, these sparsely populated lands consist of five different countries, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan.
In this video, I take you back to one of my favorite journeys, all the way back in 2013, when I had the chance to travel through this captivating and welcoming region.
From the historic monuments of Samarkand to the green pastures of Kyrgyzstan. From the waves of the Caspian Sea to the imposing mountain ranges along the Pamir Highway. From the bustling markets of Khujand to Turkmenistan’s surreal capital city ...

The countries included in the video are Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Armenia,
Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:
We begin this journey in Samarkand, one of the most iconic cities along the ancient Silk Road. Located in Uzbekistan, it’s full of remarkable monuments but also provides a good introduction into daily life, especially in the lively farmers markets and bazaars. After Samarkand, we go to the Caucasus, to visit the fast developing capital city of Azerbaijan, Baku. Visiting the modern shopping malls and vibrant streets gives an interesting contrast with the narrow alleys of the old town here, and the wide promenade facing the Caspian Sea.
The Pamir Highway in Tajikistan is one of the most challenging, but also rewarding, travel destinations in Central Asia. It requires solid preparation, and many tourists decide to hire experienced travelers and guides for their trips. Back in Uzbekistan, the Fergana Valley takes you back in time, with charming villages, and an opportunity to view a traditional silk weaving factory.
Astana, now known as Nur-Sultan, is the modern capital city of Kazakhstan, and sometimes nicknamed as ‘Dubai of the Steppe’. It’s an interesting place to visit, and attracts people from across the country to work, study, and live. Back in the Caucasus, Tbilisi is steeped in history, and full of culture and charisma. The stunning Tsminda Sameba Cathedral is an important place of worship in the Georgia’s Orthodox Christian religion.
In Kyrgyzstan you will find some of the region’s most traditional ways of life, as nomadic shepherd families still move from villages to classic yurts. Traveling across the green pastures is a great way to experience a lifestyle that seems unusual in many societies these days. The capital city of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, is a peculiar place on the list. Regarded as a secretive dictatorship, Turkmenistan is also one of the most mysterious and closed countries in the world. Keep in mind that people here face severe limitations in their daily lives.
Armenia is a beautiful destination in the Caucasus, and includes the friendly capital Armenia, and several stunning medieval monasteries. We finish this journey in Bukhara, another important stop on the historic Silk Road. There are many mosques and other landmarks to visit, but it’s also just a friendly town where you can eat some delicious food and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

From the bustling markets of Khujand to Turkmenistan’s surreal capital city Ashgabat. From Soviet monuments in Tashkent to the futuristic architecture of Astana in Kazakhstan. And from the fast-changing skylines of Almaty and Dushanbe to the traditional villages of the beautiful Fergana Valley.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:
We start our travels on the waves of the Caspian Sea, on board of a cargo vessel crossing this vast body of water, before reaching the shores of Turkmenistan. After hours of driving through arid desert landscapes, we reach the strange capital Ashgabat.
We continue our way to Uzbekistan, our second Central Asian country, where we visit three of the most captivating ancient Silk Road cities. From the imposing monuments of Bukhara and Khiva to the historic city center of Samarkand, these places have long evoked the imagination of travelers. It’s a joy to explore the streets here, feeling lost in time between ancient buildings and vibrant bazaars, where people come to do their daily grocery shopping.
Our next stop is capital city Tashkent, an important business and cultural hub in the region. After visiting some of the landmarks and strolling through the busy bazaar, we indulge in the most popular dish in Central Asia, ‘plov’ or ‘pilaf’ prepared in a huge restaurant. One of the highlights of our travels, and the last stop in Uzbekistan, is the Fergana Valley. This area contains dozens of small villages, where you can visit traditional silk production factories, and pottery centers.
We cross the border to Tajikistan, and briefly visit Khujand, before continuing towards capital Dushanbe. Despite its troubled recent history, Dushanbe is now one of Central Asia’s most pleasant cities, with green parks, wide open spaces, and beautiful lakes.
Also known as the Rooftop of the World, the Pamir is Central Asia’s most remote and isolated region, and our next destination. From the narrow Wakhan valley to the vast plains of Badakhsan province. The unforgiving landscape of deserts, high-altitude plateaus and soaring mountain peaks is an adventure travelers’ dream. Along the way you find small villages and settlements, where local communities welcome visitors with open arms.
At the end of the Pamir Highway, is the friendly city of Osh in Kyrgyzstan, jumping off point for the awe-inspiring scenery that lies ahead. A land of mountains and lakes, almost two thirds of the population in Kyrgyzstan live in the countryside, and many retain parts of their nomadic background. We have the chance to stay in yurts here, see how they are made, witness an eagle hunter at work, and attend local horse game festivals.
After the animal and livestock market of Karakol we briefly stop in Bishkek, before we reach our last Central Asian country, Kazakhstan. Here we visit the country’s two biggest cities, the bustling Almaty and the newly built capital city Astana. Merely a dusty settlement a few decades ago, Astana has grown into a modern metropolis, with plenty of eye-catching structures to admire.

I am Grace on Tour and travel has been my biggest passion ever since I can remember. My very first international trip was done two weeks after I was born. In the summer of 2018 I started posting on this channel as I set off on a trip around Asia before studying a semester in Taiwan. I soon realized that travel is what I love and wan´t to keep on doing. I now dream of visiting every country in the world.
