Carter Benedict Burwell (born November 18, 1955) is an American composer of film scores. He is best known as a regular collaborator of the Coen brothers, having scored 17 of their films, among them Raising Arizona (1987), Barton Fink (1991), Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), No Country for Old Men (2007), Burn After Reading (2008), and True Grit (2010). Other notable works include the Spike Jonze films Being John Malkovich (1999), Adaptation (2002) and Where the Wild Things Are (2009), David O. Russell's Three Kings (1999), the miniseries Olive Kitteridge (2014), Anomalisa (2015), and Todd Haynes' Velvet Goldmine (1998), Mildred Pierce miniseries, and Carol (2015).
Burwell was born in New York City, the son of Natalie (née Benedict), a math teacher, and Charles Burwell, who founded Thaibok Fabrics, Ltd. He graduated from King School in Stamford, Connecticut, and Harvard College, where he was a cartoonist for The Harvard Lampoon.
As a film composer, Burwell has had a long-working relationship with the Coen brothers, providing music for every film they have made (except for O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Inside Llewyn Davis, which had folk music soundtracks produced by T-Bone Burnett). He enjoys working with left-field directors, such as Spike Jonze. Among his best known film scores are Miller's Crossing (1990), And the Band Played On (1993), Conspiracy Theory (1997), Hamlet (2000), The Spanish Prisoner (1997), Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007), In Bruges (2008), Twilight (2008), Where The Wild Things Are (2009), The Blind Side (2009), and Breaking Dawn Part 1 (2011). Burwell wrote and recorded the original score for the film The Bourne Identity, but his version was replaced by director Doug Liman for one by John Powell.
The Burwells (known as the Burls among Virginians ) were among the First Families of Virginia in the Colony of Virginia.John Quincy Adams once described the Burwells as typical Virginia aristocrats of their period: forthright, bland, somewhat imperious and politically simplistic by Adams' standards. In 1713, so many Burwells had intermarried with the Virginia political elite that Governor Spotswood complained that " the greater part of the present Council are related to the Family of Burwells...there will be no less than seven so near related that they will go off the Bench whenever a Cause of the Burwells come to be tried." The Family was closely associated with the Fairfield Plantation, Gloucester County, Virginia, but several Burwells also built other famous Virginia plantations. Lewis Burwell III built the Kingsmill Plantation's manor house beginning in the 1730s. A few years later, Carter Burwell built Carter's Grove immediately to the east in what became the modern day Grove Community. Several place names such as Burwell's Bay in Isle of Wight County, Virginia are named after the Burwells. Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller, (aka Chesty Puller) is a war hero (from West Point, Virginia) takes his name from three generations of Lewis Burwells who had a large influence on early Virginia. The Burwell family of Virginia originally came from England – Bedfordshire. Their early history is not completely known but by 1607, they were living in Harlington, Bedfordshire, at Harlington House – now known as Harlington Manor.
Ailein duinn ("Dark-haired Alan") is a traditional Scottish song for solo female voice, a lament that was written in Gàidhlig for Ailean Moireasdan ("Alan Morrison") by his fiancée, Annag Chaimbeul ("Annie Campbell"). Ailean Moireasdan was a sea captain from the isle of Lewis. In the spring of 1788 he left Stornoway to go to Scalpay, Harris, where he was to marry Annag Chaimbeul ("Annie Campbell"). Unfortunately they sailed into a storm and all the crew sank with the vessel, except Annag. The broken-hearted Annag wasted away through grief and composed this lament for her lost love. Annag lost her will to live and died a few months afterward. Her body was washed ashore near where her fiancé's was found.
There are many versions of the lyrics and of the melody; the following version was used in the film Rob Roy (the untranslated words are vocables):
The song was sampled, somewhere around 2000, as a solo voice, with a very good interpretation, in a music library called "Vocal Planet" by Spectrasonics, making the a cappella version of the original song very accessible to lot of composers, this would be one of the reasons for which there are so many appearances in the media. The following is a list of songs, some of them using the sample of that music library, while others offer their own new interpretation:
Rob Roy by Carter Burwell
This is one of my most treasured Soundtrack moments from the movie, Rob Roy. I can't tell you how much this song has haunted me down the years. I can hear it a million times and still cry as if it's my first. The song is a traditional Scottish lament that dates back to 1788 and tells the tale of a sailor, Ailein Moireasdan ( or 'Alan" in English ) who was a sea captain sailing from Stornoway to Scalpay to marry his love, Annag ( or Annie in English ). Unfortunately, he sails right into a storm and perishes with his ship. Poor Annag composes this song for her lost love but never recovers from her grief and tragically drowns herself in the ocean. Certainly one of the most beautiful and sorrowful songs ever written, Ailein Duinn, is sung by Karen Matheson with music by Carter Burwell for the 1995 film Rob Roy. I've wanted to make a video for this music for a long time; I just had to wait until I got the right footage. When I happened by an enchanting little glade during an autumn drizzle, I had to stop and capture what you see here, traipsing around in the cold rain, stalking the perfect shots for what I had pictured in my mind. I hope you all enjoy! This video is fanart to the music of the film "Rob Roy" as well as to Blizzards night elves in the warcraft universe. It´s basicaly a test to enhance my skills in odeling, animation and composing. She still seems a little bit robotic but I´m fine with that. (Don´t want to change the scene again because it takes more than two days of rendering). Software used. Autodesk Maya 8.5 Complete, Autodesk Mudbox 1.0, Blender 2.54, Photoshop Cs3, VirtualDub Song used: "Ailein Duinn" sung by Karen Matheson and arranged by Carter Burwell from the "Rob Roy" soundtrack. And so the lion fell in love with the lamb.
What a stupid lamb.
What a sick masochistic lion.
About three things I was absolutely positive.
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him -
and I didn't know how dominant that part might be -
that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love
with him.
