Afghanistani/æfˈɡænᵻstæn/ (Pashto/Dari: افغانستان, Afġānistān), officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia. It has a population of approximately 32 million, making it the 42nd most populous country in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north; and China in the far northeast. Its territory covers 652,000km2 (252,000sqmi), making it the 41st largest country in the world.
The War in Afghanistan (or the American war in Afghanistan) is the period in which the United States invaded Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks. Supported initially by close allies, they were later joined by NATO beginning in 2003. It followed the Afghan Civil War's 1996–2001 phase. Its public aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power. Key allies, including the United Kingdom, supported the U.S. from the start to the end of the phase. This phase of the War is the longest war in United States history.
Afghanis-tan(あふがにすタン,Afuganisu-tan, see note on name below) or Afghanistan is a Japanese yonkomamanga, originally published as a webcomic, by Timaking (ちまきing). It is also the name of the heroine of the manga. The manga is nicknamed Afgan(あふがん,Afugan)
Each yonkoma strip is accompanied by an "Afghan Memo" that explains in prose some of the background and history of the nations depicted. Additional pages give short biographies of the characters.

You read about it, you see snippets on the news and, we hate to say it, Afghanistan becomes just another battle zone. Another skirmish in the so-called war on terror. That is until you're in the thick of it, under enemy fire. That's when you realise how grim, how relentless, maybe how futile this war really is. Despite the jubilation after the American invasion five years ago, the Taliban has not been defeated. Far from it. This conflict is now deadlier than ever, and we're about to send 240 more Australian troops into a country where the enemy's everywhere and everyone's a target.

The Fall Of Afghanistan: How America’s $2 trillion, Two-Decade War Ended In Chaos
Twenty years of war for the United States and coalition partners in Afghanistan ended with the collapse of the Afghan government after U.S. troops withdrew from most of the country. The rapid advance of the Taliban forced an evacuation of more than 100,000 people from Afghanistan over the course of the last few weeks, and led to the deaths of 13 U.S. service members. Here’s how the fall of Afghanistan happened so quickly, and what’s next for the war-torn country.

War In Afghanistan Made Contractors BILLIONS In Profits
As the U.S. failed in its attempt to reshape Afghanistan’s political landscape after 20 years of war, the only success stories from the war are coming from private contractors and other entrepreneurs. The top five biggest contractors received a sum of about $2.1 trillion in taxpayer dollars to fund the war effort. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss on The Young Turks. How to lose a war in 20 years
In 2001 an international coalition led by the USA invaded Afghanistan to destroy terrorist organisation Al-Qaeda when the Taliban refused to hand over Osama bin Laden. British forces went in alongside US troops. At the height of the conflict there were more than 130,000 NATO troops on the ground. By July 2021, nearly all NATO countries had fully withdrawn.
But, after 20 years of conflict, the Taliban again claim to be in control of Afghanistan.
In this video, we look at how the war in Afghanistan began, what Britain’s role was, and why the war lasted for 20 years.

Fighting The Taliban: The Battle Inside Afghanistan (War POV Documentary) | Real Stories
In this powerful HBO documentary, award-winning journalist Ben Anderson tells the story of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, and its commanding officer, Captain Ryan Sparks. In the biggest military operation of the Afghanistan war to date, Sparks and the 272 men of Bravo are flown 12 miles and dropped into the center of Marjah, where the Taliban lie in wait. For the young Marines, their first task begins. Embedded with Bravo Company, Anderson provides an intimate and sobering look at the realities of counterinsurgency warfare.
On February 13, 2010, American-led coalition forces launched the biggest military operation since the beginning of the Afghanistan War. Their target was the town of Marjah, a Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan. There, the Marines had four tasks: remove the Taliban, hold all ground seized, build infrastructure and governance, and transfer control to Afghan security forces.

Afghanistan Helmet Cam Combat footage from Charkh shows a US Soldier being knocked against the wall of a compund by the backblast of a ANA fired RPG during an Taliban ambush on US Airborne Soldiers and their Afghan National Army counterparts.
Of course the soldier wasn't so happy about the careless RPG usage of the ANA soldier and got really angry at him for not taking care of his surroundings.
The video was narrated by Nick Forney who put together a nearly 90 minute long documentary with footage from the time of his deployment in Charkh district, Logar province Afghanistan with 1-91 recon surveillance target acquisition 173rd airborne brigade from 2009-2010.

We film with US army veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq as they unpack the War on Terror. We also investigate why after trillions of dollars spent on the war; the US government is signing a deal with the Taliban. What caused this military stalemate? The hasty withdrawal has left a poorly trained Afghan Army incapable to fight the Taliban, who now control vast swathes of Afghanistan.
A wave of disappointment has swept across 800,000 Americans who served in these unwinnable wars since 2001. Countless American veterans now battle against the physical and mental scars of these wars on their own. This lack of support has translated into suspicion and hatred for their own government, leading to January 6th Insurrection Day riots.
Why are veterans joining white militias resulting in the FBI declaring them the biggest threat facing the United States today? We find out if America’s global wars have radicalized its own military men who are now bringing the war back home.

As the U.S. failed in its attempt to reshape Afghanistan’s political landscape after 20 years of war, the only success stories from the war are coming from private contractors and other entrepreneurs. "The U.S. lost its 20-year campaign to transform Afghanistan. Many contractors won big.
Those who benefited from the outpouring of government money range from major weapons manufacturers to entrepreneurs. A California businessman running a bar in Kyrgyzstan started a fuel business that brought in billions in revenue. A young Afghan translator transformed a deal to provide forces with bed sheets into a business empire including a TV station and a domestic airline."

Afghans climb on to plane during takeoff in attempt to flee Taliban
Desperate Afghans clung to the side of a moving US military plane leaving Kabul airport on Monday, with at least three people apparently falling to their deaths from the undercarriage immediately after takeoff. Video footage shows hundreds of people running alongside the plane as it moves along the runway of Kabul international airport. A number of people hang on to the side of the C-17A aircraft, just below the wing. Others run alongside waving and shouting.

It's a truly amazing sight - frightening too. Field, after field, thousands upon thousands of acres, a veritable sea of opium poppies. This is Afghanistan, which now produces more than three-quarters of the world's heroin and it's all so brazen, right under the noses of 11,000 American troops. They argue their war is a war on terror not drugs. So this season's crop is on its way to the West, to kids in countries like Australia. And as Richard Carleton found, no-one in Afghanistan will stop it. And why would they, when opium provides half of this battered country's income?

Afghanistan's booming drugs trade under Taliban rule - BBC News
With economic collapse in Afghanistan, the country’s drug trade appears to be booming.
Afghanistan has long been linked with the production of opium and heroin and is also now a major producer of crystal meth.
The Taliban say farmers cannot be banned from producing drugs for now because there are no alternative sources of income for poor families.

With Afghanistan’s economy on the brink of collapse, farmers in the southern city of Kandahar are turning to the region’s most lucrative cash crop – opium poppies. Opium prices have risen three-fold after the Taliban promised not to become a narco-state and end its reliance on the opium harvest. For decades, the Taliban funded its insurgency partly through the opium trade, according to the United Nations, whose data showed that in 2020, 85 per cent of the world’s opium was grown in Afghanistan.

What's next for Afghanistan's economy under Taliban rule? | Inside Story
Afghanistan is the world's seventh poorest country and mostly relies on aid.
Now, its economic prospects look even more bleak.
The United States has frozen $9.5B dollars of Afghanistan's international reserves held in its central bank.
And the IMF has suspended payment of more than $450 million for Afghanistan as part of a coronavirus relief programme..
More financial measures are likely to be imposed by Western capitals as they put pressure on the Taliban's leaders.
They've promised to form an inclusive government and ensure the nation won't become a safe haven for other armed groups.
The international community says it is waiting to see how this will be implemented on the ground.
Many warn that without international recognition and donations, the group might not be able to govern ...

The Taliban Are Cashing In Big On Afghanistan’s Billion Dollar Drug Trade | Forbes
Since first taking power in Afghanistan in the 1990s, the Taliban have been involved in the mass production and distribution of opium, which is extracted from the country's seemingly infinite amount of poppy fields.
In fact, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimates over 80% of global opium and heroin supplies are sourced from Afghanistan. The gross worth of Afghan opiate exports is estimated at between $1.5 and $3 billion per year.
Forbes spoke with two experts in the area of Afghanistan's illicit drug trade to learn more about how the Taliban's cartel became so wealthy and what could happen to drug exports now that the organization has retaken power in the country.

Afghanistan is the world’s biggest exporter of black-market opium from which heroin is made. It’s a multi-billion dollar business, responsible for around a hundred thousand deaths every year and it’s a major source of income for terrorists. RT Doc travelled to the poppy fields where death is harvested to find out why no one can put a stop to this deadly trade.
When it comes to heroin, a non-intervention policy is still going strong in Afghanistan where over 90% of the world’s black market opium is produced. Most finds its way onto the international drug market and the profits fund organized crime and terrorist groups like ISIS, which is growing in strength here.
The dealers and manufacturers aren’t hard to find: they live in luxurious houses, have fields blooming with poppies and sell th...

Many warn that without international recognition and donations, the group might not be able to govern and pay salaries.
So, will the measures mostly impact the Afghan people?
Presenter: Mohammed Jamjoom
Guests:
Haroun Rahimi, Assistant Professor of Law at the American University of Afghanistan.
Marvin Weinbaum, Director of Afghanistan and Pakistan studies at Middle East Institute, Washington DC.
Klisman Murati, Founder and CEO of Pangaea Wire Group, a geopolitical consultancy.

But there is one sure-fire way to make money there - the drug trade.
The Taliban is heavily involved in the opium and heroin trade - with money funding their recent takeover of power in Afghanistan.

After a 20-year absence from power, the Taliban took control of Afghanistan at a speed that shocked the world. Amidst reports of violence and repression by Taliban militants and political uncertainty following the new rule, millions of dollars in foreign aid were withheld. CNBC’s Nessa Anwar and Natasha Turak discuss what this could mean for the future of Afghanistan.

The dealers and manufacturers aren’t hard to find: they live in luxurious houses, have fields blooming with poppies and sell their narcotic wares in broad daylight. Even so, they still manage to evade arrest. Poppy fields are destroyed and drugs seized but it’s only ever the middle men who are punished, not the drug lords. There’s been a NATO military presence in the country for 14 years now but still, drugs production continues to grow.
Local people suffer from the drug business too, around 18% of the capital’s population are drug addicts. The places where drugs are sold and used are well known but the police are powerless to act. Mafia wars drive civilians from their land in the southern regions, forcing them into refugee camps in their own country. Opium growers get rich by plunging fellow citizens into the depths of misery.
RT Doc’s investigative team visited Afghanistan to document the Police’s losing battle against opium producers and its effect on the rest of the country. They talk to police officers, drug users and opium growers in search of a fuller picture and to ask why this massive and life-destroying industry continues to flourish.

Is Afghanistan’s healthcare system about to crumble? | The Stream
Afghanistan’s healthcare system is on the verge of collapse if the international community doesn’t step in, according to the World Health Organization.
The United Nations last week made an urgent appeal for almost $200m in emergency funding from donor countries. Last month, as a response to the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul, the World Bank froze tens of millions of dollars in aid earmarked for Afghanistan. Money that hospitals and clinics depended on.
According to the country's acting health minister, Dr Wahid Majrooh, 90 percent of medical facilities across the country face closure because of a lack of money.
"Patients don't have food. The facilities don't have fuel - don't have oxygen," Majrooh said in an interview with Insider.

Afghanistan's healthcare system buckling under the strain of COVID-19
Afghanistan's healthcare system is buckling under the strain of COVID-19. Only five hospitals are equipped for treating infected patients, after more than 30 facilities were forced to close due to a lack of doctors and medicines. The only COVID-19 treatment hospital in Kabul is short of oxygen and medical supplies. There isn't even enough fuel for heating as winter temperatures drop below freezing during the day. Medical staff have only received one month's salary since the Taliban took over half a year ago.

Afghanistan's health system at breaking point | COVID-19 Special
Afghanistan is battling a third wave of COVID-19 infections. The country's healthcare system is overwhelmed.
With hospitals full, a persistent shortage of oxygen, and a general failure to adopt basic precautions like mask wearing and social distancing, Afghanistan has entered its severest period yet of the pandemic.
Rights groups have urged the government to procure more oxygen and vaccines. So far only about 2 percent of the population has received jabs. And years of war have already weakened the health care system, that's now one of the world's most unprepared to deal with the pandemic.

The Taliban on Tuesday thanked the nations that have so far donated funds.
"The Islamic Emirate will try its best to deliver this aid to the needy people in a completely transparent manner," acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi told a news conference.
While the wisdom of funnelling international aid money to the Taliban government is debated, healthcare workers are trying to get a handle on the COVID-19 cases that are slowly creeping up across the country. Just five percent of the population has received at least one vaccine dose - a sobering statistic considering one-third of covid tests performed on September 7 came back positive.
In this episode of The Stream, we take a look at the state of the country’s healthcare system and ask what can be done to avert disaster.

As Afghan citizens continue to desperately flee their beloved homeland, Access Hollywood shares the story of one of the country's most famous pop stars who barely got out in time. Aryana Sayeed is well known for her music career, as well as having been a judge on Afghanistan's "The Voice." As a woman who embraces Western culture and advocates for women's rights, she has long been a target for the Taliban. Aryana tells Access' Zuri Hall all about her harrowing escape with her fiancé. She also reveals that as she was fleeing, a woman asked her to save her baby. "The baby was screaming and I was like, 'Oh my God, this baby is going to die any minute now,'" she said, later adding that she didn't want to separate the mother and child. "If I take the baby and her mother cannot make it – What's gonna happen then? I cannot separate a baby from the mother, and the mother actually wanted me to take the baby… but then I couldn’t – the soldiers asked me if this was my baby and I said, 'Look, it's not mine, but could you please let her in, because the baby is gonna die,' and they said, 'I'm sorry madam we cannot do that,'" she shared, adding that ultimately she does not know what became of the mother and child. Tune in to Access Hollywood on Aug. 24 for Part 2 of our interview with Aryana, where she details the threats she received from Taliban leaders.

As the U.S. failed in its attempt to reshape Afghanistan’s political landscape after 20 years of war, the only success stories from the war are coming from private contractors and other entrepreneurs. The top five biggest contractors received a sum of about $2.1 trillion in taxpayer dollars to fund the war effort. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss on The Young Turks. "The U.S. lost its 20-year campaign to transform Afghanistan.

With economic collapse in Afghanistan, the country’s drug trade appears to be booming.
Afghanistan has long been linked with the production of opium and heroin and is also now a major producer of crystal meth.
The Taliban say farmers cannot be banned from producing drugs for now because there are no alternative sources of income for poor families.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Secunder Kermani and cameraman Malik Mudassir.

As the U.S. failed in its attempt to reshape Afghanistan’s political landscape after 20 years of war, the only success stories from the war are coming from private contractors and other entrepreneurs. The top five biggest contractors received a sum of about $2.1 trillion in taxpayer dollars to fund the war effort. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss on The Young Turks. "The U.S. lost its 20-year campaign to transform Afghanistan.

Many warn that without international recognition and donations, the group might not be able to govern and pay salaries.
So, will the measures mostly impact the Afghan people?

Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world.
But there is one sure-fire way to make money there - the drug trade.
The Taliban is heavily involved in the opium and heroin trade - with money funding their recent takeover of power in Afghanistan.

Thousands of health workers have fled, while obtaining medicine has become increasingly difficult with international funding withdrawn from the country after the Taliban seized power.
And the hot summer months are having a devastating impact on food supply because of drought, which means more patients than ever - especially children - are suffering from severe malnutrition.
