The Buenos Aires 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games (Spanish: Juegos Olímpicos de la Juventud de 2018) is the third edition of the Summer Youth Olympics, a major international sports in which culture and education are also of great importance, are due to be celebrated in the tradition of the Summer Olympic Games on 1–12 October 2018 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Bidding
Six bids were initially submitted for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. Buenos Aires confirmed their bid in September 2011. On 13 February 2013, the IOC selected Buenos Aires as one of the three Candidate Cities for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games. The other two candidate cities were Glasgow and Medellín. Guadalajara and Rotterdam failed to become candidates. Poznań withdrew their bid before the candidate cities were selected.
The host city election vote was held at an IOC Session in Lausanne. The results were as follows:
The 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games (German: Olympische Jugend-Winterspiele 2012), officially known as the I Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG), were an international multi-sport event for youths that took place in Innsbruck, on 13-22 January 2012. They were the inaugural Winter Youth Olympics, a major sports and cultural festival celebrated in the tradition of the Olympic Games. Approximately 1100 athletes from 70 countries competed. The decision for Innsbruck to host the Games was announced on 12 December 2008 after mail voting by 105 International Olympic Committee (IOC) members. Innsbruck is the first city to host three winter Olympic events, having previously hosted the 1964 Winter Olympics and the 1976 Winter Olympics.
Organization
Host city election
All four applicant cities were kept as candidate cities by the IOC in August 2008. Swedish skier Pernilla Wiberg was the Evaluation Chair for the Commission to score the applicant cities. In November 2008, two cities (Harbin and Lillehammer) were cut from the list, leaving both Kuopio and Innsbruck in the running. On 12 December, the final vote was revealed to be 84 votes to 15, with Innsbruck winning the hosting rights.
The 2010 Summer Youth Olympics (Chinese:第一届夏季青年奥林匹克运动会; pinyin:Dì Yī Jiè Xiàjì Qīngnián Àolínpǐkè YùndònghuìTamil:2010 கோடைக்கால இளையோர் ஒலிம்பிக் விளையாட்டுக்கள்2010 Kōṭaikkāla Iḷaiyōr Olimpik ViḷaiyāṭṭukkaḷMalay:Sukan Olimpik Belia Musim Panas 2010) were the first edition of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), an international multi-sport and cultural event for youths based on the tradition of the Olympic Games. Held in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010, the Games featured about 3,600 athletes aged 14–18 from 205 nations, who competed in 201 events in 26 sports. No official medal tables were published, but the most successful nation was China, followed by Russia; hosts Singapore did not win any gold medals. Most unique features of the YOG, such as mixed-NOCs teams (comprising youths from different countries) and the Culture and Education Programme (CEP), made their debut at the 2010 Games.
Although the concept dates back to 1998, formal plans for the YOG were only announced at the 119th IOC session on 6 July 2007. On 21 February 2008, Singapore was selected as the host city after defeating Moscow 53-44 in a postal vote by 105 International Olympic Committee (IOC) members. The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) prepared eighteen competition venues and twelve training venues. The Float@Marina Bay hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and the Youth Olympic Village was located at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The committee also selected Games mascots Lyo and Merly (a lion and a female merlion), the Spirit of Youth emblem (through a design competition) and the theme song "Everyone" (performed by five singers, each representing a major continent (combining North and South America)).
The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is an international multi-sport event organized by the International Olympic Committee. The games are held every four years in staggered summer and winter events consistent with the current Olympic Games format. The first summer version was held in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010 while the first winter version was held in Innsbruck, Austria from 13 to 22 January 2012. The age limitation of the athletes is 14 to 18. The idea of such an event was introduced by Johann Rosenzopf from Austria in 1998. On 6 July 2007, International Olympic Committee (IOC) members at the 119th IOC session in Guatemala City approved the creation of a youth version of the Olympic Games, with the intention of sharing the costs of hosting the event between the IOC and the host city, whereas the traveling costs of athletes and coaches were to be paid by the IOC. These Games will also feature cultural exchange programs and opportunities for participants to meet Olympic athletes.
Originally scheduled to be held in 2022, at the 127th IOC Session it was decided to move the organisation of the YOG to a non-Olympic year,
starting with the 4th Summer Youth Olympic Games, to be postponed from 2022 to 2023.
José Antonio Hernández Griego, president of the NGOMonterrey Ciudad Olímpica A.C., has stated that the capital of Nuevo León will bid for the 2023 Summer Youth Olympics as part of a long-term plan to host the Summer Olympics in 2028 or 2032. Monterrey tried to bid for 2014 and 2018, but Guadalajara was chosen by the Mexican Olympic Committee (Comité Olímpico Mexicano) as the national applicant city both times.
The 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games (officially known as II Summer Youth Olympic Games; Chinese: 第二届夏季青年奥林匹克运动会) was the second Summer Youth Olympic Games, an international sports, education and cultural festival for teenagers, held from 16 to 28 August 2014 in Nanjing, China.
April 2009 – NOCs to inform the IOC of the name of a YOG Candidate City. (This was changed from February 2009 after several NOCs asked for more preparation time)
September 2009 – Submission of the YOG Candidature File, YOG Guarantees File, photographic files and Undertaking
