1948 Arab–Israeli War
The 1948 Arab–Israeli War or the First Arab–Israeli War was fought between the State of Israel and a military coalition of Arab states. In Hebrew it is known as The War of Independence (Hebrew: מלחמת העצמאות, Milkhemet Ha'Atzma'ut) or the War of Liberation (Hebrew: מלחמת השחרור, Milkhemet HaShikhrur). This war formed the second stage of the 1948 Palestine war, known in Arabic as The Nakba or Catastrophe (Arabic: النكبة, al-Nakba).
There had been tension and conflict between the Arabs and the Jews, and between each of them and the British forces, ever since the 1917 Balfour Declaration and the 1920 creation of the British Mandate of Palestine. British policies dissatisfied both Arabs and Jews. The Arabs' opposition developed into the 1936–1939 Arab revolt in Palestine, while the Jewish resistance developed into the Jewish insurgency in Palestine (1944–1947). In 1947 these ongoing tensions erupted into civil war, following the 29 November 1947 adoption of the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine which planned to divide Palestine into three areas: an Arab state, a Jewish state and the Special International Regime for the cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

The Six-Day War (Hebrew: מלחמת ששת הימים, Milhemet Sheshet Ha Yamim; Arabic: النكسة, an-Naksah, "The Setback" or حرب ۱۹٦۷, Ḥarb 1967, "War of 1967"), also known as the June War, 1967 Arab–Israeli War, or Third Arab–Israeli War, was fought between June 5 and 10, 1967 by Israel and the neighboring states of Egypt (known at the time as the United Arab Republic), Jordan, and Syria.
Relations between Israel and its neighbours had never fully normalized following the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. In the period leading up to June 1967 tensions became dangerously heightened. As a result, in reaction to the mobilisation of Egyptian forces along the Israeli border in the Sinai Peninsula, Israel launched a series of preemptive airstrikes against Egyptian airfields on June 5. The Egyptians, whose defensive infrastructure was in a poor state, were caught by surprise, and nearly the entire Egyptian air force was destroyed with few Israeli losses, giving the Israelis air superiority. Simultaneously, the Israelis launched a ground offensive into the Gaza Strip and through the northern and central routes of the Sinai, which again caught the Egyptians by surprise. After some initial resistance, the Egyptian leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser, ordered the evacuation of the Sinai. On June 6 and 7, Israeli forces rushed westward in pursuit of the Egyptians, whose retreat was disorganized and chaotic. The Israelis inflicted heavy losses on the retreating Egyptian forces. By June 7 the Israelis had reached the Suez Canal and had taken Sharm el Sheikh in the south of the peninsula. Conquest of the Sinai was completed on June 8 when Israeli forces reached the peninsula's western coast.

Yom Kippur War
The Yom Kippur War, Ramadan War, or October War (Arabic: حرب أكتوبر Ḥarb ʾUktōbar, or حرب تشرين Ḥarb Tišrīn; Hebrew: מלחמת יום הכיפורים Milẖemet Yom HaKipurim or מלחמת יום כיפור Milẖemet Yom Kipur), also known as the 1973 Arab–Israeli War, was a war fought by the coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria against Israel from October 6 to 25, 1973. The military combat actions during the war mostly took place in the Sinai and the Golan Heights, territories that were occupied by Israel since the Six-Day War of 1967. Egypt and Syria wanted to regain the Sinai and the Golan Heights respectively. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat wanted also to reopen the Suez Canal. Neither specifically planned to destroy Israel, although the Israeli leaders could not be sure of that.
The war began when the Arab coalition launched a joint surprise attack on Israeli positions in the Israeli-occupied territories on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, which also occurred that year during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Egyptian and Syrian forces crossed ceasefire lines to enter the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights respectively, areas which Israel had captured six years earlier in the Six-Day War. Both the United States and the Soviet Union initiated massive resupply efforts to their respective allies during the war, and this led to a near-confrontation between the two nuclear superpowers.

Suez Crisis
The Suez Crisis, also named the Tripartite Aggression and the Kadesh Operation, was an invasion of Egypt in late 1956 by Israel, followed by the United Kingdom and France. The aims were to regain Western control of the Suez Canal and to remove Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser from power. After the fighting had started, the United States, the Soviet Union, and the United Nations forced the three invaders to withdraw. The episode humiliated Great Britain and France and strengthened Nasser.
On October 29, Israel invaded the Egyptian Sinai. Britain and France issued a joint ultimatum to cease fire, which was ignored. On November 5, Britain and France landed paratroopers along the Suez Canal. The Egyptian forces were defeated, but they did block the canal to all shipping. It became clear that the Israeli invasion and the subsequent Anglo-French attack had been planned beforehand by the three countries.
The three allies had attained a number of their military objectives, but the Canal was now useless and heavy pressure from the United States and the USSR forced them to withdraw. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower had strongly warned Britain not to invade; he now threatened serious damage to the British financial system. Historians conclude the crisis "signified the end of Great Britain's role as one of the world's major powers". Peden in 2012 states, "The Suez crisis is widely believed to have contributed significantly to Britain's decline as a world power." The Suez Canal was closed from October 1956 until March 1957. Israel fulfilled some of its objectives, such as attaining freedom of navigation through the Straits of Tiran.

His camera documents the Jews' perspective, the evacuation of thousands of Jews from the Old City of Jerusalem. Philip captures, for Life Magazine, the destruction of the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.
Meanwhile, Ali Zaarour was one of the few photographers who took photos of the Palestinian side of the story. His photos had never been seen before his grandson discovered them and undertook a tremendous task to illustrate the catastrophe that this war was also for the Palestinians. The Naqba, the catastrophe and the darkest day, where 750,000 Palestinians lost their homes and became refugees.
The documentary also focuses on Jack Padwais, producer of the first major film about the founding of Israel, "Hill 24 Does Not Answer" directed by Thorold Dickinson. Coming from a right-wing Jewish family, he recreated the battle for Jerusalem from an Israeli perspective. To this day, his film is consistently used in schools as the definitive account of that historic battle.
This documentary shows how photographs not only have the power to anchor history in memories and ensure that it is not forgotten but also the ability to create a story and offer different perceptions of an event.

And in response to the Israeli victory, more than 850,000 Jews living in Iran and Arab countries in the Middle East and North Africa were expelled from their homelands.

The events of the 1948 war of Jerusalem, which would lead to the founding of Israel, had been immortalized through the photographies of two war phtographers, British and Palestinian.
John Philip, the british photographer, was one of the first photo journalist in the world on the war in Jerusalem. His camera documents the jews perpective, the evacution of thousand of jews from the Old City of Jerusalem. Philip captures, for Life Magazine, the destruction of the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.
Meanwhile Ali Zaarour was one of the few photographers who took photos of the Palestinian side of the story. His photos has never been seen before his grandson discovered them, and undertook an tremendous task to illustrate the catastrophe that this war was also for the Palestinians. The Naqba, the catastrophe and the darkest day, where 750,000 Palestinians lost their homes and became refugees. The documentary also focuses on Jack Padwais, producer of the first major film about the founding of Israel, "Hill 24 Does Not Answer" directed by Thorold Dickinson. Coming from a right wing Jewish family, he recreated the battle for Jerusalem from an Israeli perspective. To this day, his film is consistently used in schools as the definitive account of that historic battle.
This documentary shows how photographs not only have the power to anchor history in memories and ensure that it is not forgotten, but also the ability to create a story and offer different perceptions of an event.

On May 14, 1948, Palestinian Jews established the State of Israel. The next day, the new nation was invaded by the combined armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq, assisted by volunteer fighters from other Arab countries. The Arabs’ stated reasons for the invasion were: 1. to stop the violence and to restore law and order in Palestine, and 2. to allow the Palestinian people to form a government of their choice. Also cited by the Arabs was the displacement of Palestinian Arabs caused by Jewish aggression. As the nation of Israel was by now in existence, the resulting war was one fought by sovereign states.

May 15, 1948 – Israel is attacked by the combined armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq, assisted by volunteer fighters from other Arab states
May 17, 1948 –Jordanian forces besiege Jerusalem, soon forcing the surrender of the Jewish defenders of the city
May 25, 1948 – Iraqi forces capture Geulim, Kfar Vona, and Ein Vered before being stopped by the Israelis at Netanya
May 26, 1948 – Israeli authorities merge the various small militias and a large Jewish paramilitary into a single Israeli Defense Forces, the country’s regular armed forces
June 6, 1948 – Syrian forces launch a second attack into Galilee in northern Palestine
June 11, 1948 – The United Nations (UN) impose a truce, which lasts for 28 days until July 8th
July 9, 1948 – Israeli forces launch an offensive aimed at opening a corridor from Tel-Aviv to eastern Palestine, in order to lift the siege on Jerusalem; the attack fails to break the solid Jordanian defenses in Jerusalem
July 12 – 14, 1948 – Egyptian offensives in Negba (on July 12th), Gal (on July 14th), and Be-erot Yitzhak are repulsed
July 16, 1948 – Israeli forces in northern Palestine capture Nazareth and the whole region of Lower Galilee extending from Haifa in the coastal west to the Sea of Galilee in the east
July 18, 1948 – The UN imposes a second truce, which lasts nearly three months until October 15, when fighting breaks out once more

On May 14, 1948, Palestinian Jews established the State of Israel. The next day, the new nation was invaded by the combined armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq, assisted by volunteer fighters from other Arab countries. The Arabs’ stated reasons for the invasion were: 1. to stop the violence and to restore law and order in Palestine, and 2. to allow the Palestinian people to form a government of their choice. Also cited by the Arabs was the displacement of Palestinian Arabs caused by Jewish aggression. As the nation of Israel was by now in existence, the resulting war was one fought by sovereign states.

May 15, 1948 – Israel is attacked by the combined armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq, assisted by volunteer fighters from other Arab states
May 17, 1948 –Jordanian forces besiege Jerusalem, soon forcing the surrender of the Jewish defenders of the city
May 25, 1948 – Iraqi forces capture Geulim, Kfar Vona, and Ein Vered before being stopped by the Israelis at Netanya
May 26, 1948 – Israeli authorities merge the various small militias and a large Jewish paramilitary into a single Israeli Defense Forces, the country’s regular armed forces
June 6, 1948 – Syrian forces launch a second attack into Galilee in northern Palestine
June 11, 1948 – The United Nations (UN) impose a truce, which lasts for 28 days until July 8th
July 9, 1948 – Israeli forces launch an offensive aimed at opening a corridor from Tel-Aviv to eastern Palestine, in order to lift the siege on Jerusalem; the attack fails to break the solid Jordanian defenses in Jerusalem
July 12 – 14, 1948 – Egyptian offensives in Negba (on July 12th), Gal (on July 14th), and Be-erot Yitzhak are repulsed
July 16, 1948 – Israeli forces in northern Palestine capture Nazareth and the whole region of Lower Galilee extending from Haifa in the coastal west to the Sea of Galilee in the east
July 18, 1948 – The UN imposes a second truce, which lasts nearly three months until October 15, when fighting breaks out once more

One war, ten days, three stories: the Old City of Jerusalem, at the dawn of a new Middle East. For the Brits, it's the shameful end of the 30-year Mandate. For the Jews, it's the birthday of their State. And for the Palestinians, it's a catastrophe. Only now, 60 years later, images can be shown from three opposing points of view, telling a whole new story.
The events of the 1948 war of Jerusalem, which would lead to the founding of Israel, had been immortalized through the photographs of two war photographers, British and Palestinian.
John Philip, the British photographer, was one of the first photojournalists in the world on the war in Jerusalem. His camera documents the Jews' perspective, the evacuation of thousands of Jews from the Old City of Jerusalem. Philip captures, for Life Magazine, the destruction of the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.
Meanwhile, Ali Zaarour was one of the few photographers who took photos of the Palestinian side of the story. His photos had never been seen before his grandson discovered them and undertook a tremendous task to illustrate the catastrophe that this war was also for the Palestinians. The Naqba, the catastrophe and the darkest day, where 750,000 Palestinians lost their homes and became refugees.
The documentary also focuses on Jack Padwais, producer of the first major film about the founding of Israel, "Hill 24 Does Not Answer" directed by Thorold Dickinson. Coming from a right-wing Jewish family, he recreated the battle for Jerusalem from an Israeli perspective. To this day, his film is consistently used in schools as the definitive account of that historic battle.
This documentary shows how photographs not only have the power to anchor history in memories and ensure that it is not forgotten but also the ability to create a story and offer different perceptions of an event.

Depending on where you stood in 1948, the war that broke out following the declaration of Israeli independence was a war of self-determination and sovereignty; of liberation and even of catastrophe. By the end of the war, Israel had lost 1% of its population, including 2,000 survivors of the Holocaust.
The term Nakba reflects the reality that some 700,000 of the indigenous Arab population were exiled or had fled the country and over 15,000 had been killed. And in response to the Israeli victory, more than 850,000 Jews living in Iran and Arab countries in the Middle East and North Africa were expelled from their homelands.
This was not an easy time - for anyone.

The June 1967 War was a milestone in the Arab-Israeli conflict, with consequences still felt across the region to this day.
It altered the political and military landscape, expanded Israel’s territorial claims and confirmed Israel's military dominance in the region.
This war is known to Arabs as 'The War in June' and in Israel as 'The Six Day War'. It came just two decades after the 1948 'Nakba,' or catastrophe, when the state of Israel was established and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled from their homes and land.
‘The War in June’ looks at the roots of the 1967 War and documents the actual details of six days of battle, before considering the profound long-term consequences of this conflict.

1948 Arab–Israeli War
The 1948 Arab–Israeli War or the First Arab–Israeli War was fought between the State of Israel and a military coalition of Arab states. In Hebrew it is known as The War of Independence (Hebrew: מלחמת העצמאות, Milkhemet Ha'Atzma'ut) or the War of Liberation (Hebrew: מלחמת השחרור, Milkhemet HaShikhrur). This war formed the second stage of the 1948 Palestine war, known in Arabic as The Nakba or Catastrophe (Arabic: النكبة, al-Nakba).
There had been tension and conflict between the Arabs and the Jews, and between each of them and the British forces, ever since the 1917 Balfour Declaration and the 1920 creation of the British Mandate of Palestine. British policies dissatisfied both Arabs and Jews. The Arabs' opposition developed into the 1936–1939 Arab revolt in Palestine, while the Jewish resistance developed into the Jewish insurgency in Palestine (1944–1947). In 1947 these ongoing tensions erupted into civil war, following the 29 November 1947 adoption of the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine which planned to divide Palestine into three areas: an Arab state, a Jewish state and the Special International Regime for the cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
