In chemistry, molecular orbital (MO) theory is a method for determining molecular structure in which electrons are not assigned to individual bonds between atoms, but are treated as moving under the influence of the nuclei in the whole molecule. The spatial and energetic properties of electrons within atoms are fixed by quantum mechanics to form orbitals that contain these electrons. While atomic orbitals contain electrons ascribed to a single atom, molecular orbitals, which surround a number of atoms in a molecule, contain valence electrons between atoms. Molecular orbital theory, which was proposed in the early twentieth century, revolutionized the study of bonding by approximating the positions of bonded electrons—the molecular orbitals—as Linear Combinations of Atomic Orbitals (LCAO). These approximations are now made by applying the Density Functional Theory (DFT) or Hartree–Fock (HF) models to the Schrödinger equation.
Quantitative applications
In this theory, each molecule has a set of molecular orbitals, in which it is assumed that the molecular orbital wave functionψj can be written as a simple weighted sum of the n constituent atomic orbitalsχi, according to the following equation:
Orbital is the first album from Orbital, released in 1991. It is often referred to as the "Green Album", to differentiate it from the band's second album, titled Orbital 2 (known as the "Brown Album"), which bears only the band's name on the cover.
The album
The original European release includes live versions of "Chime" and "Midnight". Orbital was released in 1992 with a significantly different cover and track listing in the United States, incorporating remixes and non-album singles. All tracks on the U.S. release had also been remastered using the Bedini Audio Spectral Enhancer (B.A.S.E.) to enhance their stereophonic effects.
Samples
"Belfast" uses a sample of soprano Emily Van Evera performing "O Euchari" from the Gothic Voices album A Feather on the Breath of God. The same sample had appeared on The Beloved's hit "The Sun Rising" a year earlier, but had not been credited.
An orbital (also known as a circle line or loop) in the context of metro systems is a metro or subway line encircling a city or metropolitan area. Such lines relieve the loads on other lines within the orbital by providing alternative connections among the other lines. In other words, a passenger whose origin and destination are both outside the enclosed central area but on different lines can bypass the urban center and possibly shorten the journey by going around the (often congested) area enclosed by the orbital.
Theory is a contemplative and rational type of abstract or generalizing thinking, or the results of such thinking. Depending on the context, the results might for example include generalized explanations of how nature works. The word has its roots in ancient Greek, but in modern use it has taken on several different related meanings. A theory is not the same as a hypothesis. A theory provides an explanatory framework for some observation, and from the assumptions of the explanation follows a number of possible hypotheses that can be tested in order to provide support for, or challenge, the theory.
A theory can be normative (or prescriptive), meaning a postulation about what ought to be. It provides "goals, norms, and standards". A theory can be a body of knowledge, which may or may not be associated with particular explanatory models. To theorize is to develop this body of knowledge.
As already in Aristotle's definitions, theory is very often contrasted to "practice" (from Greek praxis, πρᾶξις) a Greek term for "doing", which is opposed to theory because pure theory involves no doing apart from itself. A classical example of the distinction between "theoretical" and "practical" uses the discipline of medicine: medical theory involves trying to understand the causes and nature of health and sickness, while the practical side of medicine is trying to make people healthy. These two things are related but can be independent, because it is possible to research health and sickness without curing specific patients, and it is possible to cure a patient without knowing how the cure worked.
The game of chess is commonly divided into three phases: the opening, middlegame, and endgame. There is a large body of theory regarding how the game should be played in each of these phases, especially the opening and endgame. Those who write about chess theory, who are often but not necessarily also eminent players, are referred to as "theorists" or "theoreticians".
"Opening theory" commonly refers to consensus, broadly represented by current literature on the openings. "Endgame theory" consists of statements regarding specific positions, or positions of a similar type, though there are few universally applicable principles. "Middlegame theory" often refers to maxims or principles applicable to the middlegame. The modern trend, however, is to assign paramount importance to analysis of the specific position at hand rather than to general principles.
The development of theory in all of these areas has been assisted by the vast literature on the game. In 1913, preeminent chess historian H. J. R. Murray wrote in his 900-page magnum opus A History of Chess
that, "The game possesses a literature which in contents probably exceeds that of all other games combined." He estimated that at that time the "total number of books on chess, chess magazines, and newspapers devoting space regularly to the game probably exceeds 5,000". In 1949, B. H. Wood opined that the number had increased to about 20,000.David Hooper and Kenneth Whyld wrote in 1992 that, "Since then there has been a steady increase year by year of the number of new chess publications. No one knows how many have been printed..." The world's largest chess library, the John G. White Collection at the Cleveland Public Library, contains over 32,000 chess books and serials, including over 6,000 bound volumes of chess periodicals. Chess players today also avail themselves of computer-based sources of information.
The strength of a scientific theory is related to the diversity of phenomena it can explain, and to its elegance and simplicity. See Occam's razor. As additional scientific evidence is gathered, a scientific theory may be rejected or modified if it does not fit the new empirical findings; in such circumstances, a more accurate theory is then desired. In certain cases, the less-accurate unmodified scientific theory can still be treated as a theory if it is useful (due to its sheer simplicity) as an approximation under specific conditions (e.g., Newton's laws of motion as an approximation to special relativity at velocities which are small relative to the speed
of light).

O2(-1) is just like regular molecular oxygen, but the extra electron causes its bond to be unstable. Its bond order is 1.5

Chad provides a comprehensive lesson on Molecular Orbital Theory. The lesson begins by showing how overlap of atomic orbitals results in both bonding and antibonding molecular orbitals. Constructive overlap between atomic orbitals results in a lower energy, bonding molecular orbital, while destructive overlap between atomic orbitals results in a higher energy, antibonding molecular orbital. The Molecular Orbital diagrams of H2 and He2 are both presented and used to explain why H2 exists and He2 does not. It is also shown how to calculate bond order from a molecular orbital diagram (formula) and how for many species this is consistent with the number of bonds in the Lewis structure.
The Molecular Orbital diagrams for homonuclear diatomic molecules of the second period are then presented. The Molecular Orbital diagrams of O2, F2, and Ne2 are presented and the corresponding bond orders calculated. Paramagnetic and diamagnetic are defined and it is shown that a species is paramagnetic if it has unpaired electrons and diamagnetic if all of its electrons are paired. The MO diagrams are then used to explain why Ne2 does not exist (bond order = 0) and why O2 is paramagnetic, something that wouldn't be predicted by the Lewis structure. The MO diagram for N2 is then presented and it is shown that the energies of the sigma 2p and pi 2p molecular orbitals are inverted due to sp mixing in the MO diagram for Li2, Be2, B2, C2, and N2. The bond order for N2 is calculated (it equals 3) which corresponds nicely with the triple bond present in the Lewis structure.

When two oxygen atoms overlap, the sigma(2p) molecular orbital is LOWER in energy than the pi(2p) orbitals. This different from Nitrogen, where it's the other way around.

In chemistry, molecular orbital (MO) theory is a method for determining molecular structure in which electrons are not assigned to individual bonds between atoms, but are treated as moving under the influence of the nuclei in the whole molecule. The spatial and energetic properties of electrons within atoms are fixed by quantum mechanics to form orbitals that contain these electrons. While atomic orbitals contain electrons ascribed to a single atom, molecular orbitals, which surround a number of atoms in a molecule, contain valence electrons between atoms. Molecular orbital theory, which was proposed in the early twentieth century, revolutionized the study of bonding by approximating the positions of bonded electrons—the molecular orbitals—as Linear Combinations of Atomic Orbitals (LCAO). These approximations are now made by applying the Density Functional Theory (DFT) or Hartree–Fock (HF) models to the Schrödinger equation.

In this theory, each molecule has a set of molecular orbitals, in which it is assumed that the molecular orbital wave functionψj can be written as a simple weighted sum of the n constituent atomic orbitalsχi, according to the following equation:
