This was, IMO, an important chemistry journal in the mid 1900s, certainly important in Brazil. However, there's a few publications named similarly, by two publishers named similarly, and it's very hard to make sense of sources (or find them) when you don't speak Portugese.
Bom dia. In the last few weeks I've been working a bit on the article Caviana. I just have a doubt about the area of this island. Caviana is on various Wikipedia lists that assert its area as 5000 km2:
This all seems to be based on this source, but I strongly doubt that Caviana is this large. The length of 98 km and with of 48 km in my article are correct. I got the number 2,360 km2 from de:Caviana. But my questions are: What would be a good source for the area of this island? And if we find it, maybe we should adapt its inclusion on some of these lists? Obrigado, LeRoc (talk) 10:05, 20 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @LeRoc! I looked into this and I believe that the source for that 5000 km2 should not be used. As to this page on that website, the information on this website is pieced together from a variety of sources by a single person so I would treat it as an unreliable tertiary source. I did some more research on this island to try to find a more accurate area estimate and I found two sources (Source A and Source B) that help. Pg 31 of Source A gives an area of 2,257 km2 for Caviana Meridional and 687 km2 for Caviana Setentriona, and Pg 33 shows that Caviana Meridional refers to Caviana and Caviana Setentriona refers to this island north-west of Caviana. While Source B doesn't contain area information for the island, page 287 calls Caviana Ilha Caviana (Caviana island) and the island north-west of it Ilha Caviana de dentro (Inner caviana island). Source B also looks like a great general source to use for expanding information on the article. My recommendation is to use the 2,257 km2 area estimate given by Source A and replace references to this island being 5000 km2. It may also be useful to include Caviana Meridional as an alternate name for Caviana on its page. Espero ter ajudado! BaduFerreira (talk) 16:45, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Obrigado. The thing is: the maps in both sources A and B are wrong. They wrongly identify Caviana Setentrional as part of what is actually the island Viçosa. Hmm, I'll look a bit further. LeRoc (talk) 19:07, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have a source for Ilha Viçosa? To me, it appears that Ilha Viçosa/Janauçu and Caviana Setentrional/Ilha Caviana de dentro can be treated as either one or two islands based on water level. It shows as one island on Google Maps, but you can kinda make out how it would be two if you look at the satellite view. BaduFerreira (talk) 19:22, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's really hard to find good maps to decide on this, but I think you're right. Let me see tomorrow how I solve this. LeRoc (talk) 20:19, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just found this IBGE map (linked here) that shows the two islands as Ilha Caviana de Dentro and Ilha Janauçu or Viçosa. Additionally, here Ilha Caviana is called Ilha Caviana de Fora (Outer caviana island). BaduFerreira (talk) 04:42, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I think that worked. I put the image that Cmglee made on the article Caviana. I think that together with the explanation I wrote, it makes it clear now which island is which. Maybe at some point in the future, IBGE will recognise that Inner Caviana has merged with Janaucu, but until then I think we need to consider it part of Caviana. I will remove Caviana from all lists that assert its area as 5000km2. Obrigado pela ajuda. LeRoc (talk) 07:34, 26 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
