WikiProject Medieval Magheb

[edit]

I want to create a WikiProject focused on the history of the medieval Maghreb, from the Islamic conquests up to the arrival of the Ottomans. The goal is to improve coverage of this period, which is often overlooked or poorly documented. Many existing articles rely heavily on outdated sources, unverifiable original content, or additions without proper references. Some are shaped by nationalist narratives, while others draw from blogs or non-specialist websites instead of serious historical research. If you're interested in this era and have some background or curiosity about it, you're very welcome to join. Regards

I might be able to help out, although I find Wikipedia articles on North African history generally get better coverage than sub-Sahara African history ones, so I usually focus on the latter. Which articles are the most in need of work? Kowal2701 (talk) 19:57, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The history of the Sub-Saharan region in Africa requires specialized knowledge. From my limited experience, I believe local participation is incredibly important. Encouraging people from this area to contribute to Wikipedia could make a difference. There’s a project called Les Sans Pages that focuses on women and aims to involve Africans as well. If you're interested, you could help translate articles from there to here. I wish I knew more about the region myself; otherwise, I would love to get involved in those projects.
As for the articles, most of those related to the Medieval Maghreb need work, to be honest. There’s also a lack of articles on topics like books, personalities, tribes, archaeological research, rulers, and architecture. I started the project on frwiki and am trying to help align things here too. You are most welcome to join! Riad Salih (talk) 20:31, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you’re interested, I’d highly recommend reading the General History of Africa, it’s free at Internet Archive. But there are very few editors focussed on African history here. There’s a handful specialising in West African history, and some more specialising in their own country's history, but unfortunately that’s pretty much it. You might struggle to get a WikiProject on a relatively narrow topic going (I failed to get WP:Oral tradition going), but Wikipedia:WikiProject Council. You might be able to start a taskforce. If you find more success on French wiki, it might be a case of translating articles from there. For cases where there’s too much for you to do on your own, you can use {{Expand language}} on existing articles where their French counterparts are of better quality, and you can add missing ones to Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki/French/History. I can join though I may not be too helpful Kowal2701 (talk) 20:57, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Catjacket might be interested? Kowal2701 (talk) 21:15, 2 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is a great project, but I'm already quite busy working on West Africa. To echo what was said above, in my experience I've found that articles that touch on both the Maghreb and West Africa (e.g. Pashalik of Timbuktu, Char Bouba) tend to focus more on the northern perspective and less on the southern, and so I've never felt a big need to work on the former at the expense of the latter. I do speak fluent French, however, and could help translating articles. So while I won't be taking any initiative on the Wikiproject (like on Oral Tradition, sorry @Kowal2701), if you want my help on any specific things, whether they're Subsaharan-related or not, feel free to ping me. Catjacket (talk) 08:11, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the book, @Kowal2701! I will definitely check it out. I also appreciate the advices. As for @Catjacket, I agree, but I believe that the Maghreb Medieval Project can also help with these articles, as there are some connections between them. Unfortunately, the articles need significant improvement, but it's challenging because there aren't active contributors from those regions involved (and they definitely know their history better). Anyway, anyone is welcome to join at any time! Riad Salih (talk) 14:05, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The vital articles list

[edit]

A recent report by 1ctinus has confirmed suspicions that Africa is horribly underrepresented on the Level 5 vital articles list. As members of this WikiProject are likely to be knowledgeable about what articles should be added to improve African representation, I am inviting you to participate in discussions about improving the list's quality. Its talk page can be found here. Thanks, QuicoleJR (talk) 12:56, 18 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

New Tools Available for your WikiProject

[edit]

Hello WikiProject Africa members,

For WikiProjects, new tools are available! These tools help manage collaborative activities on the wikis, like this WikiProject. These tools are available through the CampaignEvents extension, which is enabled on this wiki, English wikipedia and multiple other wikis incuding Wikidata and Meta. The tools are:

  • Event Registration: A way to register participants and manage collaborative activities on-wiki. It can be used for WikiProject events, such as a contest, collaboration, meetup, or edit-a-thon. Features include: public/private registration, automatic registration confirmation emails, ability to mass email participants, and more. See video guides on Commons. If you would like to try it out for a future event, I can help you set it up!
    • Event Registration is already permitted by default in the Event namespace. Starting this week of May 19, it will also be permitted by default in the project (Wikipedia) namespace. Learn more about permitted namespaces.
  • Collaboration List: A way to promote your WikiProject and events to new audiences.  The Collaboration List has two tabs: Events (i.e., all events that use Event Registration) and Communities (i.e., all WikiProjects on the local wiki). You can transclude it on a WikiProject or User page too, so you can have an automatically updated calendar of topically relevant events (see videos on how to do this).
  • Invitation Lists: Find editors to invite to join your WikiProject, based on their edit history. This tool generates an invitation list, and then you can choose to invite the editors via user talk page messages or email. If you want help trying out, let us know! See video demo.

Note that Event Registration and Invitation Lists require the event-organizer right. You can request the right from wiki admins.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am happy to answer any questions you have. Thank you! - Udehb-WMF (talk) 11:16, 20 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There is a requested move discussion at Talk:Marble Arch (Libya)#Requested move 21 May 2025 that may be of interest to members of this WikiProject. ASUKITE 20:42, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Project members are invited to participate in The World Destubathon. We're aiming to destub a lot of articles and also improve longer stale articles. It will be held from Monday June 16 - Sunday July 13. There is $3338 going into it, with $500 the top prize. If you are interested in winning some vouchers to help you buy books for future content by improving articles for your country or any other, or just see it as a good editathon opportunity to see a lot of articles improved for your project, sign up if interested.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:18, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Stade Balibiè has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Tagged as Unreferenced and unimproved for 15 and 1/2 years. No other language has a reliably sourced article from which to translate. Zero hits on Google news, newspapers, and books. Lacks significant coverage in reliable sources, with only directory listings.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Bearian (talk) 05:46, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm seeing a lot of unsourced stadia in Category:Articles lacking sources from December 2009, and I don't want to mass propose deletions without giving you all another chance after 15 and 1/2 year. Can somebody triage these unsourced stubs, or do you want me to do it? Bearian (talk) 05:51, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
