Internship Program Overview
The Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) legal internship program is for qualified law students interested in privacy and digital advertising. This internship will provide law students with a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge legal, policy, and technology issues impacting today’s online and mobile advertising world. Interns will be provided an orientation explaining the various business models in the industry and the privacy issues with emerging technologies. Interns will have close interaction with NAI’s small, but sophisticated staff of lawyers and technologists. Legal interns will also interact with the world’s leading Internet and digital media companies. The internship schedule is flexible and can accommodate class and other schedules. There is a minimum time requirement of 16 hours per week during the semester. The NAI generally accepts up two interns per semester.
Additional Information
Legal Intern Responsibilities May Include:
- Monitor and analyze federal and state bills and statutes related to online privacy, data security, and technology issues
- Reviewing online privacy disclosures for required representations about data collection, use and retention; reviewing responses to compliance questionnaires, and participating in conference calls and interviews with members
- Assist compliance counsel with enforcement proceedings to determine the scope of alleged violations of the NAI Code by members
- Conduct legal research on specific topics such as tort liability, lobbying, defamation, intellectual property, and other issues
- Attend conferences, seminars, presentations, and hearings regarding online privacy, advertising and marketing, and related technology issues
- Monitor international developments in the areas of privacy, advertising, marketing, and technology and the implementation of new privacy legislation and regulations across the globe
Required Skills
- Excellent written ability, including the ability to draft documents, emails, and materials for different audiences
- Strong interpersonal skills and verbal communication skills
- Enthusiasm and interest in privacy, technology, information security, and/or Internet law and policy
- Desire to be creative and tackle novel, cutting-edge issues that may not be “traditional” legal issues – work assignments may involve the intersection of law, technology, policy, and business interests
- Course work in privacy law, technology law, intellectual property, communications law, and/or e-commerce desirable
- Basic familiarity with Web and Internet technology desirable (cookies, client/server model, web browsers, browser privacy settings, domain names, URLs, the basic elements of a website, etc.)
- Microsoft Office and Google Suite skills (Spreadsheets & Text Editing)
The internship will provide opportunities for professional development and mentoring. Possibility exists that internship could evolve into a permanent position for the right candidate.

Internship Program Overview
The Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) public policy internship program is for qualified undergraduate or graduate students interested in public policy and the intersection of privacy laws and regulations in the digital advertising industry. This internship will provide students with a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge policy issues impacting this industry. The NAI leads in the development of privacy self-regulatory guidance and best practices for responsible advertising technology companies, and we are the leading trade association promoting public policies that provide strong consumer data privacy, while also promoting the robust data driven advertising industry.
NAI Public Policy Interns will be provided an orientation explaining the various business models in the industry and the policy issues with emerging technologies. Interns will have close interaction with NAI’s policy and legal staff. The internship schedule is flexible and may be conducted virtually to accommodate coursework. The work requirement ranges from 16-25 hours per week during the semester. This is an unpaid internship, but in some cases the NAI may provide expenses to provide for attendance at related meetings and events.
Public Policy Intern Responsibilities May Include:
- Participate in the Government relations process within a trade association to gain valuable experience in industry government relations, public affairs, and strategic communications efforts,
- Conduct policy & industry research,
- Help draft newsletters, blog posts and educational material for lawmakers,
- Track federal and state bills and statutes related to digital advertising and privacy issues,
- Attend industry meetings, presentations and congressional hearings regarding online, privacy, advertising and marketing, and related technology issues (virtual or in-person depending on circumstances),
- Prepare summaries of hearings for the public policy team and member companies.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in Undergrad or Graduate Degree with relevant coursework, such as Political Science, International Affairs, or related discipline with a focus on public policy,
- Excellent written ability, including the ability to draft documents, emails, and materials for different audiences,
- Proactive and effective working both independently and part of a team,
- Strong interpersonal skills and verbal communication skills,
- Enthusiasm and interest in privacy, advertising industry and policy,
- Microsoft Office and Google Suite skills.
Skills & Education/Experience Preferred:
- Enthusiasm and interest in technology, public policy, and data privacy
- Experience with or knowledge of the digital advertising industry
- Interest in advertising technology
Work Environment
- With offices in Washington, DC and Portland, ME, the NAI is a small but fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- This is a hybrid position, with flexibility to work in person at our office in Washington, DC and remotely. Under certain circumstances, this internship may be offered virtually.
