Fences are a type of wall. Unlike most other walls they allow some view of the background and don't appear to stop mushrooms/flowers from spawning, though they can still be removed with a Hammer.

Wooden Fence and Lead Fence are the only fences that allow forest and hallow grasses to grow. Other fences will block grass from growing.
