Survivor (サバイバー Sabaibā) is the Japanese version of the reality show Survivor. Four seasons were produced and aired in Japan from April 9, 2002 to March 11, 2003 by the Japanese network TBS.
Format[]
The show follows the same general format as the other editions of the show, first showcased in Expedition Robinson 1997 and later popularized by Survivor: Borneo. 16 castaways are split into two tribes and are taken to a remote, isolated location and are forced to live off the land with meager supplies for 39 days. Frequent physical and mental challenges are used to pit the tribes against each other for rewards, such as food or luxuries, or for immunity, forcing the other tribe to attend Tribal Council, where they must vote off one of their own tribemates.
Once around half the players are remaining, the tribes are merged into a single tribe, and challenges are competed on an individual basis; winning immunity prevents that player from being voted out. Most players that are voted out from this stage onwards form the jury. Once only two castaways remain, the Final Tribal Council is held, where the Final Two plead their case to the jury as to why they should win the game. The jury then votes for which player they believe should be considered the Sole Survivor, who would win a prize of 10,000,000 yen. Due to laws at the time, the prize would be split between five people who applied as a group who nominated the person that went on to compete in and win the competition.
