Red Twelve was the callsign of the twelfth member of Red Squadron. There were a number of starfighter squadrons with this name, and several beings went by the name Red Twelve.
During the Clone Wars, a pilot designated Red Twelve flew with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker during a battle over Tythe.
During the Battle of Yavin, Rebel Alliance pilot Puck Naeco, flying as Red Twelve, covered Red Leader Garven Dreis on his failed trench run alongside Red Ten, Theron Nett. He was killed when his X-wing fighter was destroyed by Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader.
Behind the scenes[]
Red Twelve is not named in dialogue in A New Hope, but is mentioned in the script. The pilot's face is never seen, and the character was not named in any source for many years. It had been theorized that since the pilot in the scene depicting the death of Theron Nett has a different helmet than Nett's, he may have originally been intended to be Red Twelve. The Essential Guide to Warfare finally revealed pilot Puck Naeco flew as Red Twelve in the battle.
The unofficial fan-named character Drifter has been given the callsign Red Twelve by fans. It's been suggested that the actor is present in the award ceremony scene, and that he survived the Death Star assault, though Red Twelve clearly dies in the movie.
