- "As a symbol of hope and redemption in the face of Sith atrocities, the Republic has begun an unlikely effort to re-colonize Taris, establishing a spaceport, military base and the beginning of settlements amid the ruins."
- ―A HoloNet dossier on Taris during the Cold War
Olaris, also known as Olaris Reclamation Base, was a city on the ruined planet of Taris during the Cold War between the Galactic Republic and the reconstituted Sith Empire. Founded as part of the Taris Resettlement Initiative, Olaris served as the headquarters of the restoration project and all Republic operations on the world.
History[]
The Taris Resettlement Initiative was begun by the Senate not long after the end of the Great Galactic War between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire. During the resulting Cold War, the Senate decided to rebuild the shattered world—which had been destroyed over 300 years earlier by Darth Malak in an attempt to kill the Jedi Knight Bastila Shan—as a demonstration of the Republic's ability to overcome the destruction wrought by the Sith.[3]
In 3643 BBY, Olaris was run by the Governor Leontyne Saresh, the Twi'lek planetary governor. The city featured the planet's main spaceport, as well as a cantina and medcenter. Many of the different teams and crews in the Republic Resettlement Zone were based there, and Olaris was one of Zone's two major military bases—the other being Waypoint Station Aurek to the west.[1]
The city was frequently besieged by the native rakghouls, and as a result was guarded by massive walls built out of metal salvaged from the ruins of the former city-planet. By 3643 BBY, the two outer sections of the city had become overrun with rakghouls, forcing the military to create a barricade at the city's gates to hold back the savage Sithspawn.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
Olaris was created for Star Wars: The Old Republic, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game released by BioWare on December 20, 2011. It serves as the main hub for players on the Republic version of Taris, featuring the normal planetary vendors and class trainers. It also features a cantina, a medcenter, and a taxi station, as well as access to the planet's spaceport and the players' ships.[1]
Several missions available to players begin or end in the city, and players receive the planet's Bonus Series from Strom and Bardo in the spaceport.[1] Olaris also marks the first appearance chronologically of Saresh, who becomes Supreme Chancellor after the Bounty Hunter class kills or drives out the current Chancellor, Dorian Janarus.[4]
