- "They are devious and deceitful and, most importantly, stupid."
- ―Dooku
The Ohnaka Gang, also known as Hondo's Gang or the Hondo Ohnaka pirate gang, and sometimes referred to as the Weequay pirates, was a group of pirates led by Hondo Ohnaka that was based on the Outer Rim planet Florrum by the Clone Wars. Despite the common moniker of Weequay pirates, Nikto, Bith, Jawa,[2] and Ishi Tib[8] pirates were also members of the gang.[2] RA-7 protocol droid 4A-2R was a valued member of the gang.[9]
While the gang managed to operate during the Clone Wars, it was dissolved during the Galactic Empire's rise for reasons unknown. During the Imperial Era, Ohnaka continued to work, but he was now only a small-time pirate and smuggler.[9] During the reign of the Empire, the gang regrouped[10] under the leadership of Captain Skragg, who claimed to be more ruthless than Ohnaka ever was.[3]
History[]
Capture of Dooku[]
Kidnapping for profits[]
During the Clone Wars, the gang was led by Captain Hondo Ohnaka in the Outer Rim. From their base on Florrum, they raided starships and held travelers for ransom.[11] During one of their layovers on Vanqor, Ohnaka and his gang were approached by the Sith Lord and Separatist Head of State Count Dooku. Ohnaka and his gang took Dooku to Florrum. En route, the pirates were able pick pocket Dooku's lightsaber and Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber. Despite Dooku's threats, Ohnaka and his gang were able to surround and outnumber him.[2]
Ohnaka contacted Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and demanded to be paid one million in spice. After Senator Padmé Amidala asked that two Jedi confirm that his gang did have Dooku, Ohnaka demanded they arrive unarmed. When Obi-Wan Kenobi and Skywalker arrived, Ohnaka and his gang checked for weapons. Despite Skywalker's attempt to reclaim his lightsaber, Ohnaka and his gang took them to see Dooku. After reporting Dooku's capture, the gang invited the Jedi to a banquet.[2] The Pirates were able to drug Kenobi and Skywalker and tied them with up with Dooku. Ohnaka told Turk Falso to welcome Senator Kharrus and escort them to their complex.[12]
Escape attempts and a Gungan's moves[]
Unfortunately, Falso, Barb Mentir, and several other pirates planned to steal the spice from the Republic. Mentir shot down the Republic transport and told Falso that there were survivors. Falso, Mentir, and several of the pirates went to deal with the survivors, keeping their operation secret from Ohnaka. During the time, Ohnaka and his gang were able to prevent, Kenobi, Skywalker, and Dooku from escaping. Falso and his men were able to steal the ransom, but lost it when Junior Representative Jar Jar Binks and Commander Stone's escort retrieved. Falso told Ohnaka about this, saying the Republic was attacking with an army and would give them the ransom. Ohnaka sent several tanks to attack the Republic forces while he would deal with the Jedi.[12]
The crew of the tanks Ohnaka sent found only Representative Binks and attempted to take him as a prisoner. Binks inadvertently took control of one of the tanks, destroying the power grid, until he was held at gunpoint. The pirates, seeing him as saboteur, decided to kill him, but were subdued by Commander Stone and his troopers. Ohnaka and his remaining pirates tortured the Jedi until the power cut out. Kenobi and Skywalker were able to retrieve their lightsabers and take Ohnaka hostage. During this time, Dooku was able to sneak away. Dooku strangled Falso and forced him to shoot Mentir, who were also trying to leave the compound, and escaped on a pirate ship. As Kenobi and Skywalker made their way to the Twilight with Ohnaka, they were joined by Binks and Stone's troops. Ohnaka was released and in return they were allowed to leave. Kenobi warned that Dooku may return to seek revenge.[12]
Further actions in a galactic war[]
Ohnaka and his gang traveled to Felucia where they tried to force a farming village to give them their nysillin crops. Ohnaka and his gang were forced deal with the farmers, as well as hired bounty hunters and Jedi Master Kenobi, Knight Skywalker, and his Padawan Ahsoka Tano. Ohnaka tried to bribe the bounty hunters to no avail and refused Kenobi's offer of Republic credits. Thus, Ohnaka and his gang attacked the village. Unfortunately, the farmers, Jedi and bounty hunters forced the pirates to leave.[5]
Ohnaka and his gang met up with Ohnaka's ex-girlfriend, Aurra Sing and his old friend Jango Fett's son, Boba. Ohnaka refused to aid Sing and Fett in their quest for vengeance against Windu. Ohnaka promised he and his men would not hinder them either. Ohnaka and his men allowed Master Plo Koon and Padawan Tano to land. When Sing escaped, Ohnaka and his men allowed Tano to take one of their bikes to pursue her. Ohnaka was able to convince Fett to reveal Slave I's location to Koon and Tano. After Tano forced Slave I to crash,[13] Ohnaka pulled Sing out of it's wreckage[14] and salvaged it.[15]
The pirates later attacked the Crucible, ambushing the crew with the intent to steal kyber crystals to sell for a large profit.[8] They captured Tano, but she was eventually freed by the group of Jedi younglings. Shortly afterward, General Grievous and an army of battle droids, seeking revenge for Ohnaka's capture of Dooku earlier in the war, arrived on Florrum, forcing the pirates and Jedi to band together to fight their common enemy. Though Ohnaka, accompanied by several of his pirates, the Jedi, R2-D2, and Professor Huyang, escaped the planet aboard the Slave I, allowing him to return the Jedi and their droids to a Republic task force and unsuccessfully attempt to barter with Kenobi,[15] Grievous's attack left the pirate operation in ruins.[16]
Some time later, self-proclaimed Sith Lords Maul and Savage Opress arrived. They exploited the greed of some of Ohnaka's pirates to form their own faction, resulting in a civil war between the pirates loyal to the Sith and those still loyal to Ohnaka. Kenobi, joined by Jedi Master Adi Gallia, returned to the planet while tracking Maul, resulting in the two Jedi joining the skirmish. Though Gallia was killed during the fighting by Oppress, the rogue pirates rejoined Ohnaka after they were trapped at gunpoint, with the captain explaining that the Sith were only interested in Kenobi. With his gang reunified, Ohnaka and his pirates fired on the two dark side adepts as they fled, even bringing down their YV-865 Aurore-class freighter with a rocket launcher. As his men scoured the cargo from the Sith Lords' transport, Ohnaka was left with the impression that the two Force-sensitives had been killed, though Kenobi correctly assumed they had survived.[16]
Imperial Era[]
The Tonnika sisters once stowed away on an Ohnaka Gang starship.[17] Sometime after the Galactic Empire's formation, the Ohnaka Gang was broken up.[6] Nevertheless, by the aftermath of the Battle of Hoth,[3] the gang had regrouped[10] under the control of a pirate named Skragg.[3]
