"These large aquatic reptiles are also known as kamoradon sea dragons. They live in the waters of Kamino, where they troll the sea near Tipoca City in search of food."
―From the journal of Ardis San Tekka[1]

Kamoradon sea dragons, shortened as just kamoradons and also known as saberjowls, were large aquatic reptiles native to the oceans of their homeworld Kamino. Six-limbed carnivores, they used their razor-sharp teeth to eat prey such as smaller sea creatures. They had a shell to protect them from predators, although few creatures attacked them, and they laid their nests of eggs in the deepest parts of the ocean to avoid unwanted visitors.

Kamoradons sought food in the waters around Tipoca City on Kamino, and in 19 BBY, the fugitive clones of Clone Force 99 drew the attention of one such creature. The reptile attacked the Kamino tube system that the clones were using to escape the bombardment of the city by the Galactic Empire, causing damage to the tubes that allowed water in. The kamoradon was then deterred by an electric shock when the medical droid AZI-3 re-activated the tunnel's power.

The Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts droids SF-R3 and CAM were sent to witness a kamoradon hatching event on Kamino and located a nest using a submarine. The parent of the nest attacked and chased the submarine, although the droids still witnessed the hatching before the adult kamoradon hurled the submarine back to the surface. SF-R3 and CAM's colleague Ardis San Tekka included an entry on kamoradons in her journal at some point after the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY.

Biology and appearance[]

"Their long, pointed snouts are filled with rows of sharp teeth that they sink into their prey, from smaller sea creatures to ill-begotten sentients. Three sets of flippers propel them through the water, and long tails serve as both stabilizer and weapon."
―From the journal of Ardis San Tekka[1]

Kamoradons had a sharp snout of razor-sharp teeth.

Kamoradon sea dragons, also referred to as just kamoradons[1] or saberjowls, were a species[2] of massive, non-sentient reptile[1] that measured up to one-hundred and twenty meters (three-hundred and ninety-four feet) long[2] and weighed approximately a thousand kilograms. Aquatic creatures, they propelled themselves through the water with three sets of flippers, each ending in five black claws, and used their long,[1] elegant[4] tail as both a stabilizer and a weapon.[1]

Kamoradons were carnivorous predators and fed on smaller sea creatures or sentient beings. They had long, pointed snouts[1] with enormous, powerful jaws[2] and two rows[1] of razor-sharp,[2] unevenly sized teeth[1] that they sunk into prey. Their wide, flat heads also included a pair of[1] blue[3] eyes and a pink tongue. Although few creatures were foolhardy enough to attack a kamoradon, the reptiles had blue-green skin on the upper portion of their bodies as camouflage with a white underside. They also possessed a smooth gray shell on their back that provided additional protection from predators.[1]

KamoradonLeap-GoC

Kamoradon could leap from the ocean's surface.

Kamoradons laid clutches of eggs in nests deep underwater, which could include up to at least eight eggs. The eggs were ovoid in shape and white in color with triangular light blue markings across their shells. When ready to emerge, fully formed kamoradon young would break out of the eggs immediately ready to swim and even propel themselves above the water's surface with their parent, with adults being able to leap fully clear of the ocean.[3]

Behavior[]

"Well, enthusiast, it turns out that kamoradons lay their eggs in the deepest trenches of the Kamino waters precisely because they don't want any unannounced visitors."

Kamoradon sea dragons lived in the oceans of their homeworld Kamino, where they trolled around Tipoca City in search of food.[1] They laid their eggs hidden in the world's deepest trenches in order to avoid any unwanted visitors to the nests[3] and protect their young.[5]

History[]

Tunnel attack[]

"Restoring power should deter the creature. Try to stay alive!"

A kamoradon sea dragon attacked Clone Force 99 on Kamino.

In 19 BBY,[7] the group of fugitive clones known as the Bad Batch and the medical droid AZI-3[6] drew the attention[2] of a hungry[4] kamoradon while fleeing through the underwater Kamino tube system from the bombardment of Tipoca City by the Galactic Empire. Roaring, the creature made its way toward the tunnel, which was unprotected due to its lack of power. After the clones spotted it coming, the kamoradon charged the transparent tunnel, stopping just short of ramming into it and following alongside it behind the clones as they ran. The reptile then bashed its side against the tunnel, causing cracks to begin forming in[6] the glass.[8]

AZI-3 then flew ahead and located a[6] power port,[8] but as[6] he[2] attempted to activate it, the kamoradon repeatedly grabbed the tunnel in its jaws and caused more damage that began allowing water into the structure. Once the droid succeeded in activating the port, power returned to the tunnel just long enough for the karmoradon to receive an electrical shock while biting into the structure. The creature released the tunnel and roared as the electricity coursed through its maw before subsiding, after which the deterred predator retreated away from the tunnel into the ocean, allowing Clone Force 99 to escape.[6]

Creature enthusiasts[]

"Greetings, enthusiasts. We're taking a deep dive into the waters of Kamino today in search of a kamoradon hatching. No one has ever been able to go deep enough, so they put us droids on the job."

KamoradonNest-GoC

The Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts sent droids to locate a kamoradon nest.

Due to the depths at which kamoradons laid their eggs, no one managed to go deep enough to view a hatching event until the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts droids SF-R3 and CAM were sent in a submarine to capture footage of a hatching. As the submarine approached a nest, the kamoradon parent of the clutch bumped into the vessel as the vehicle's sensors picked up its proximity. The kamoradon then rammed into the submarine with more force, knocking it into the seafloor. The vessel came to rest facing the nest of kamoradon eggs, which were some of the largest eggs that SF-R3 had ever encountered. As SF-R3 discussed the eggs and CAM recorded, the kamoradon parent came up behind the submarine, which turned to face the creature just as it roared.[3]

Piloting the submersible away from the kamoradon, SF-R3 noticed one of the eggs hatching and turned back to rush to the nest, narrowly avoiding the adult kamoradon's closing jaws. The creature then chased the submarine back and forth around the egg until the infant kamoradon emerged from it, at which point the adult grabbed the submarine in its jaws and began shaking it around. To try and escape, SF-R3 activated the submarine's thrusters, which blasted down onto the remaining eggs and caused them to hatch as well.[3]

SF-R3 and CAM witnessed a kamoradon sea dragon hatching.

Distracted by the sudden influx of infants, the parent kamoradon hurled the submarine up to the ocean's surface, where SF-R3 began delivering a monologue to conclude the footage they had captured. The parent kamoradon and several of the infants then leapt from the waves near the submarine, setting off its alarms and slamming down into the surface of the water nearby.[3] The two droids' colleague Ardis San Tekka included an illustrated entry on kamoradons in her journal[1] at some point after the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY.[9]

Behind the scenes[]

Naming[]

A kamoradon sea dragon first appeared in "Kamino Lost,"[6] the sixteenth episode in the first season of the animated television series Star Wars: The Bad Batch, which aired on August 13, 2021.[10] The creature was newly designed for the series,[11] with artist Jason Pichon creating four pieces of concept art for the species on June 16, 2020.[12] The creature was not identified in the episode[6] but was first named as a saberjowl by the track "Saberjowl Attack" on volume two of the season's soundtrack,[13] which was released on August 20, 2021.[14]

Jason Pichon created concept art of the kamoradon sea dragon.

By January 18, 2023, the name Kamoradon had first appeared on the StarWarsKids.com promotional page for Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures, promoting an upcoming episode in the show's second season.[5] The episode itself then released on January 31 of that year with the title "Kamoradon Sea Dragon," although this was later changed to just "Kamoradon." The episode also established the use of the lowercase kamoradon,[15] with the 2024 reference book Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. 1: Creatures of the Galaxy first using the full "kamoradon sea dragon" in lower case.[1]

The saberjowl name originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it also belonged to a Kamino sea creature, although one with a different eel-like design that was established to be cloned from the colo claw fish.[16] The Legends version of the creature appeared unidentified in the fiftieth issue of the comic series Star Wars: Republic, in a portion written by John Ostrander and illustrated by Jan Duursema.[17] The comic was released by Dark Horse Comics on February 26, 2003.[18] The creature was then first identified in the 2004 Star Wars Roleplaying Game supplement Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds, which was published by Wizards of the Coast.[16]

Bestiary[]

KamoradonSketch-Bestiary

Iris Compiet illustrated kamoradon sea dragons for the Star Wars Bestiary.

The Bestiary was written by S.T. Bende and illustrated by Iris Compiet.[1] When first starting work on the book in 2022, Bende and the book's editor, Sammy Holland, compiled a spreadsheet of around four hundred potential creatures to include in the Bestiary. The kamoradon section was among those that made it into the first draft and survived further cuts after that to be included in the final one hundred and thirty creatures.[19]

The book started production in 2023, with Compiet using acrylic, gouache, and watercolor paints for the illustrations of the kamoradon and other creatures. Preferring to reflect the way that San Tekka would have drawn in-universe, the artist used traditional techniques when creating the artwork and produced several sketches for each entry. The final selection of images used in the book was then made by the Lucasfilm Story Group.[19]
