PART 5 "THE PATH OF THE SUNGRAZER" |
---|
In 34 ABY, pirate leader Crimson Jack warns the crew of the Halcyon that everyone aboard will die if the Resistance spy isn’t turned over to him. However, when the cruise director Lenka Mok informs him that the spy, Shorr Komrrin, has already departed aboard an escape pod, a crew member uses a hidden blaster to fire at Crimson Jack but is knocked down by the pirate after his poor shot. Annoyed with the whole situation, Crimson Jack informs his pirate crew that he’s going back to their ship to oversee the spy’s retrieval, so they can take whatever they want from the passengers and kill anyone who objects. Out in the escape pod, Shorr hopes that he’s given his granddaughter the chance that she deserves, and elsewhere on the Halcyon, Cinema promises to make her grandfather proud. Suddenly, a pirate begins to lash out to put people back in line, and D3-O9 is knocked onto the ground. As Cimina and a female Balosar named R’Tess help her up, R’Tess asks the droid if her story about the Sungrazer Comet could be told since she’d overheard Cimina being told various stories.
Flashing back a quarter of a century aboard the Halcyon, a Balosar man named Stolak is thanked by R’Tess for taking her to the Halcyon which she finds beautiful, but is also curious as to how a simple transport pilot could get reservations. The couple is then informed by D3-O9 that the Sungrazer Comet will soon make a spectacular collision with the star Daca, and a special holo report begins to play which shows Senator Leia Organa making a plea for former Imperial sympathizers to join the New Republic. R’Tess comments that Leia had her honeymoon on the Halcyon, but Stolak doesn’t care for Senator Organa since she’s a “rich snob” who doesn’t care about people like them, and while she liberated them from the Empire, the Galactic Republic, Empire, and New Republic are all the same to him. Following this, R’Tess becomes worked up and starts to cough, so Stolak heads off to grab her a Muja Twist to drink but R’Tess notices that he went in the wrong direction. Off in a private cargo room, Stolak is followed in by the Trandoshan bounty hunter Bossk, and the two instantly start to throw hands at each other and fight. As the two of them relentlessly go at each other, they constantly taunt each other and Stolak eventually gets the upper hand and knocks Bossk out. Bossk later awakes to find himself tied up, and Stolak returns to his love R’Tess with the drink and apologizes to her, saying that he got ‘tied up in conversation’ with another passenger.
In the present aboard the Halcyon, a pirate steals a broach family heirloom from a passenger and as R’Tess helplessly watches on, she states that she can’t stand bullies. Cimina then explains that she’s worried for her grandfather getting caught as he is a Resistance spy and came aboard with codes that can’t fall into the First Order’s hands.
Back in the past in a passenger cabin, R’Tess has Stolak sit still as she etches a portrait of him, but they are interrupted by a knock at the door. A distressed Stolak gets up to answer it with one hand on his holstered blaster, but it only turns out to be D3-O9 who informs them that the Sungrazer Comet collision will occur momentarily and won’t be visible from their cabin. As Stolak closes the door, he thanks the droid for the reminder and says that they’ll head for the viewing station shortly. When he sits back down for R’Tess, she finally realizes that he’s not a transport pilot, and Stolak reveals that he’s had to do bad things for credits, but he promised her the stars when they first met and couldn’t give her that on Balosar where pollution blocks out the night sky. He thought there would’ve been more time, but then she got sick and he needed to borrow more credits to get them off of Balosar faster. Suddenly, another knock sounds at the door, but this time it is the bounty hunter 4-LOM who explains that the Bounty Hunter’s Guild has authorized him to terminate him at the behest of his former employers. Stolak is grabbed by the neck and pinned against the wall, but R’Tess takes a knife and jams it into the droid, allowing her and her lover to flee the room. R’Tess tells Stolak that she would’ve been happy living off the streets of Balosar, but Stolak doesn't believe this as that ‘polluted hellhole’ got her sick. As Stolak tells her that he has a promise to keep, he is punched by the bounty hunter Wooro who is with his team that consists of T’onga and Zuckuss. On the ground, Stolak gives in and surrenders, but tries to vouch that he was only trying to see the Sungrazer Comet with his lover before they had to say goodbye. T’onga allows them to view it as long as they don’t try anything, and after the collision with the star Daca, R’Tess says that it was so luminous that it will never be forgotten by those that experienced it. The two then share one final kiss, and when Stolak thanks them, T’onga tells him not to mention it as Black Sun could cut down their rate. As the bounty hunters leave with Stolak, R’Tess holds a blaster behind them, but narrates that she couldn’t find the courage to shoot and now only thinks whether she could’ve saved him.
She didn’t pull the trigger and never saw Stolak again, and imagines that he was probably executed by Black Sun. However, they never recovered their missing credits since Stolak had paid for their room for up to a century. In the present, R’Tess tells Cimina that she’s only gotten stronger, and so she pulls out her blaster and guns down the pirates trying to steal items from the passengers. A crew member of the Halcyon informs cruise director Lenka Mok and Captain Keevan that the passengers are safe, so the two take to action and defeat the remaining pirates on the bridge. With the pirate issue dealt with, the Halcyon jumps to hyperspace on route to the nearest port. Elsewhere aboard the pirate ship, Crimson Jack, having retrieved the Resistance spy Shorr Komrrin, contacts First Order Lieutenant Harman Croy and informs him of the captured spy which will be of great value to them. Shorr is threatened and forced to unlock his case, but to the horror of Crimson Jack, the only thing inside is a model of the Halcyon which was to be a gift for Cimina. Crimson Jack is tricked, and Croy is angry since his time was wasted, so he orders for Shorr to be released and Jack not to contact him again. Meanwhile on the tourist planet of Sesid, Cimina meets up with Vi Moradi of the Resistance and delivers the codes to her to complete her grandfather’s mission.
