"The Switch Glitch" is a Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years episode from season 1. In this episode, an accident causes Patrick and Karen to switch bodies.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

The Switch Glitch 019

Patrick and Karen's minds getting switched.

Karen goes around the camp searching for lightning berries for Plankton. She finds a seaweed ball of lightning berries, but they are all eaten by Patrick. Patrick notices a voice from Karen, putting her on his head, thinking that she is a hat. Patrick and Karen get electrocuted from the effect of the lightning berries, and in conjunction with Karen's computer circuitry, their minds get switched.

SpongeBob, meanwhile, is shown talking to Plankton while the latter is waiting for Karen. Patrick, in Karen's body, rolls to Plankton and takes him to his lair. Karen, in Patrick's body, scoots towards SpongeBob, with SpongeBob pulling Karen across the camp. The two collide and roll down a hill into their cabin, where Sandy is setting up a board game. Karen looks into a mirror to find herself in Patrick's body. The three start playing their game, with "Patrick" excelling at the game and winning it, much to SpongeBob and Sandy's surprise.

At Plankton's lair, he prepares his experiment with radioactive apples as a substitute for the lightning berries, while Patrick soon realizing that he is now in Karen's body. Plankton asks for "Karen's" help with the experiment, but Patrick goes wild and accidentally injures Plankton multiple times. Plankton decides that he needs to reboot "Karen," which scares Patrick off as he exits the lair.

The Switch Glitch 142

Sandy shows her mind-switching device.

SpongeBob and Sandy question what is going on with "Patrick," as Karen reveals that she is inside his body and explains the incident that caused the mind switch. Karen gets a sense of taste and goes wild for it after eating a donut. She stubs her foot after stepping on a rock as she realizes what pain is, getting her excited and wanting SpongeBob and Sandy to kick her. Patrick causes havoc around the camp in Karen's body, while Karen, after not being amused by the sense of smell, wants to return to her body. Sandy reveals that she has created a device to reverse the mind switch, as Patrick passes by them, wanting to remain in Karen's body.

SpongeBob, Sandy, Karen, and Plankton all chase after Patrick through the camp. After the chase, Karen tempts Patrick with ice cream. Patrick is unable to taste in Karen's body, which results in him wanting to switch back into his own one. Sandy activates her machine on Patrick and Karen, switching their minds back. Patrick, still having one of Sandy's caps on, eats the ice cream, causing him to get zapped by the machine. The zaps hit the other cap on Sandy's machine, resulting in the effect spreading across the entire camp. As the machine explodes, everyone in camp is shown acting like Patrick, except Bubble Bass, who was hidden under a table. The French Narrator appears observing the camp as GrandPat flies out of the void inside him and into the screen, looking for his way home.

Production notes[]

Yeardley Wells:

  • Wells "had a lot of fun with this one!"[2]
  • "I was given license to add to this huge Plankton take! I loved working with Kurt Snyder's amazing Plankton drawings here. I got to do the part where he swallows his eyeball and it comes out his mouth."[2]
  • "[The panning shot at the end] was a fun challenge in getting the actions to overlap and start/end at different times. Forever thankful for my director Brandon's patience and guidance on this! I learned a lot from getting to stitch it together."[2]
  • "Sometimes as a revisionist, my only task for a drawing will be to add legs whenever we widen the camera. So enjoy this adorable Kurt SpongeBob with freaky legs I added."[2]
    • Supervising director Brandon Warren said in response "Finding these "hidden drawings" in your board files was a highlight of my time working with you!!" and Wells thanked them in response, saying that they found them "as funny as he did" and "always had fun hiding those Easter Eggs".[2]
    • Wells has stated that "in almost every Kamp board [they've] worked on, there is a "beyond the frame" drawing such as this!"
  • Wells was "really proud of everyone's hard work on this special!"[2]

Release[]

Reception[]

Trivia[]

General[]

  • This episode premiered as a part of "The Tidal Zone" special event.
  • This episode was originally scheduled to premiere on Friday, November 25, 2022 in the United States at 7:45 PM,[6][7][8][9] but it instead got replaced with the Nickelodeon premiere of the 2020 film The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.[10][11] This was due to the fact that the entire Tidal Zone package was delivered to Nickelodeon a week after the episode was set to premiere.
    • This episode was later scheduled to premiere at the same exact time of 7:45 PM on Friday, January 13, 2023, but it was later moved forward to 7:30 PM.
    • This episode was also scheduled to premiere in Italy on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 8:45 PM, but the segment (along with the entire "Tidal Zone" event) was later postponed for unknown reasons.
  • During the original airing and all subsequent "The Tidal Zone" re-airings, this episode segment was paired up with the SpongeBob SquarePants episodes "You're Going to Pay...Phone" and "A Skin Wrinkle in Time."[12]
  • This is the first and only Kamp Koral episode that premiered on Nickelodeon before its release on Paramount+.
  • According to the storyboards and this segment's revealing by Cartoonlounge.de, this episode was originally just going to be titled "Switch Glitch," but later on, the word "The" was added to the title.[3][13]
  • This episode has the same title as a 2001 episode of fellow Nicktoon, The Fairly OddParents!.
    • However, both episodes have differences in terms of premises: while this episode focuses on a typical body swap plotline, the OddParents! episode focuses on two characters switching positions by aging one of them down.
  • Unlike most depictions of the body swap trope, Patrick and Karen speak with their regular bodies' voices when swapped, albeit using their actual selves' voice tones.
  • The script of this episode was used for students to practice storyboarding in the 2023 Nickelodeon Storyboard Workshop.

Episode references[]

  • The ending in which everyone (including Sandy) turns dumb like Patrick is the same thing that happens in "Salsa Imbecilicus."
    • Ironically, Sandy becomes dumb unlike in said episode.
  • When SpongeBob gets zapped by Sandy's machine, his audio is reused from "FarmerBob" and "Mind the Gap."

Errors[]

  • During the montage where SpongeBob, Sandy, Karen, and Plankton chase Patrick, Karen and Patrick have their own respective voices, rather than the swapped ones.
