My grandmother used to tell me, “Nothing good happens after midnight.” While she was mostly right about that, I wanted to test if any good happens on Midnight — the Helix Midnight hybrid mattress, to be exact.

My fellow mattress experts, certified sleep science coaches, and I have over a decade of combined testing experience. We recently met in our Charlotte, NC, sleep studio to put the Midnight through a series of performance tests, hands-on evaluations, and quantitative data collection in categories such as responsiveness, cooling, edge support, pressure relief, and more.

In addition to these tests and our expert experience, we also call in the help of renowned medical professionals such as our Chief Medical Advisor, Dr. Raj Dasgupta, and our medical advisor Dr. Shelby Harris. Our dedication to comprehensive mattress reviews and seeking the best medical advice has allowed us to help over 60,000 people purchase a new mattress.

Now that the Midnight has been put through our complete testing sequence, I feel that it is a good fit for budget shoppers, lightweight back sleepers, and those who sleep with a restless partner. Read on to see if it is right for you.

Helix Midnight Mattress Overview

The Helix Midnight is an affordable hybrid with contouring memory foam layers and pocketed coils that give the versatile medium-firm mattress a balanced and supportive feel. This bed-in-a-box is part of Helix’s “Core Collection,” but upgraded Luxe and Elite versions are also available. If you are unsure which bed is for you, the Helix website offers a sleep quiz that provides a recommendation based on your answers. You will also have 100 nights to try it out for yourself, and if you don’t like it, you can return it for a refund.

We are updating our Helix Midnight Mattress video review to reflect our updated testing and scores and will have it available soon. Although this video is entertaining, it doesn’t reflect our updated scores.

Helix Midnight Mattress Firmness

Before we get into this, here is a quick reminder: Mattress firmness is not an objective measure. Your weight, sleeping position, and personal preferences will inform how hard or soft you find any given model. We try to provide you with a balanced firmness score by having several colleagues try out the Helix Midnight. Once they give their ratings, we average the scores together.

""

Although firmness is subjective, based on your body type and preferred sleep positions, we’ve established a firmness guide to help define how soft or hard a mattress feels to most people. We assign each mattress we test a 1-10 firmness rating. A bed with a firmness score of 1 would be like tucking yourself into a pile of cotton balls, and a 10 is like snoozing on a sheet of plywood. However, all of the more than 330 mattresses we have tested fall between a 4–9, with the industry standard being a “medium-firm” mattress of 6.5 out of 10 firmness.

My colleague and certified sleep science coach, Dan Caffrey, is an average-weight sleeper, and he evaluated the Helix Midnight’s firmness on his side, back, and stomach. Side sleepers typically need a slightly softer mattress that contours around the joints in their hips and shoulders, and Dan cited that this should be a good bed for them. “The Helix Midnight felt pretty soft to me in the side-sleeping position. I got some relaxing contouring at my shoulders and hips,” he said.

Although Dan thought the Midnight was suitable for side sleepers, he felt its firmness was ideal for back sleepers. He told me that he was most comfortable in this position and enjoyed that he felt contouring around his upper back and hips while also getting a lift at the lumbar region that gave him the support he needed. I also think this bed makes a solid choice for those with back pain.

However, stomach sleepers will probably want to continue their search for a new bed because after resting on it on his front side, Dan said, “My hips sank into the layers while I was on my stomach and caused my spine to uncomfortably bow. I wouldn't recommend this mattress to stomach sleepers. I think they'll need something with more firmness and support.”

“Stomach sleepers should prioritize a firm mattress with a supportive core to maintain spinal alignment and prevent excessive sinking,” explains Dr. Dasgupta, our Chief Medical Advisor.

After considering how the bed felt to the tester, we assigned the following firmness scores based on sleep positions: 6 for side and stomach sleepers and 6.5 for back sleepers.

Other Performance Factors to Consider

We also consider secondary performance factors, such as how compatible the bed is for an adjustable base, as well as the materials and manufacturer’s reputation for gauging the durability.

Helix Midnight Mattress Performance For Couples

Couples generally need a bed that performs well in responsiveness, edge support, motion isolation, and cooling, and the Midnight is a mixed bag for these features. Although “fine” is a word writers try to avoid, it is the one I keep returning to for this category. The Midnight wouldn’t make our best mattresses for couples roundup, but many couples, especially lightweight ones, could benefit from this mattress.

Base Compatibility

The Helix Midnight works well with standard bases, but we also tested it with an adjustable base. If you want to elevate your head or feet while you sleep, read, or watch TV, this bed is not your best bet.

When tester Meredith Day tried the Midnight on an adjustable base, she found that it didn’t conform, leaving a large gap between the mattress and the base. She said, “We tried laying on the mattress in zero-gravity mode, and once I laid on it, the mattress sank to meet the adjustable base. However, getting on the mattress was challenging since it was much higher than usual due to the gap.”

Durability

The Midnight is an affordable bed. However, this doesn’t mean it isn’t made with quality materials. It also has a limited lifetime warranty, which signals confidence in its product from the manufacturer. This mattress’s quality materials should hold up well, so we don’t foresee many people having to use their warranty.

Helix Midnight Sleeping Position and Body Weight

As a general takeaway, lighter sleepers don’t require as much support as average-weight sleepers, and mattresses will tend to feel firmer to them. On the other hand, heavy sleepers tend to need more support than average-weight sleepers and tend to sink into the mattress more. As far as sleeping positions go, side sleepers tend to need a softer mattress, while stomach sleepers usually need a firmer, more supportive one. Back sleepers are generally somewhere in the middle.

Dr. Dasgupta advises, “Sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds will sink into mattresses more than those who weigh less, so they will most likely need a mattress in the 7–8 range of firmness.”
