Ryonan High School is a private high school in Kanagawa. It has one of top basketball teams, that consists of Jun Uozumi, Akira Sendoh, Ryoji Ikegami, Hiroaki Koshino, Kicchou Fukuda, and Tomoyuki Uekusa as its main players. Their coach is Moichi Taoka.
Story[]
Ryonan is the first team in the series Shohoku plays and also Hanamichi Sakuragi's debut game, though it's only a practice game. Even though Shohoku lost by a point, the team greatly surpassed Ryonan's expectations.
Ryonan entered the top 4 and easily defeated Takezato. At that time, Shohoku lost to Kainan in a close game. Ryonan played excellently against the defending champions, Kainan in the Inter-High qualification games. In this game, Sendoh played as point guard, instead of his usual position as Forward and managed to force the game into overtime. However, Uozumi's ejection left all the pressure on Sendoh and Ryonan eventually lost.
Ryonan plays Shohoku but lost this time, owing to the fact that Coach Taoka had underestimated Sakuragi and Kogure, as he admitted after the game. This loss leaves Ryonan ranking 3rd in Kanagawa, and precludes their playing in the National Games. Uozumi retired along with Ikegami and Sendoh took over as the team captain. At the end of the series, Ryonan is preparing for the Winter Tournament.
Ryonan is based on Kamakura High School close to Enoshima. The Ryonan gym is based on the Kamakura High School gym. Whilst the opening scene where Sakuragi meets Haruko as a train passes is immediately outside Kamakura High School. The train is also a historical train that is only preserved and still functional for a short route around Kamakura High. The model school for Shohoku is also a few stops away from the model school for Ryonan. The Shohoku model school's name was Shonan, and split into Sho (hoku) and (Ryo)nan. Hoku means North whilst Nan means South so Shohoku's name is basically the reverse of Shonan in direction. Both Shohoku and Ryonan's model schools are close to the beach. The beaches in Slam Dunk are also similar to the long stretch of beach around Oiso to Enoshima. The ending scene where Rukawa was wearing an all-Japan jersey, Rukawa's biking scenes are all close to the actual Ryonan. The Ryonan basketball motto is taken from Shohoku's other model school, an Okinawan school that the author is close to and knows the coach of. The jersey is similar to Shohoku's red jersey, whilst the coach is the model for Ryonan's Taoka Moichi and the banner motto became Ryonan's motto.
Strengths[]
The team's main scorers are Uozumi, Sendoh and Fukuda. That trio are probably the strongest offensive trio of Kanagawa with Sendoh being an inside and outside scoring machine, Fukuda being an inside scoring machine and Uozumi, whilst not a scorer at heart can still get points in bunches. An example of this is his very impressive stat line vs Takezato with 35 points, 17 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.
Their coach, Moichi Taoka is very good as he is able to analyze the opponent's weak points. He was also the first to realise the potential of Sendoh as a Point Guard. Their players are also very fit due to their tough trainning regime; their defense is man-to-man as well as zone defense, depending on their opponent. In general Ryonan is a good defensive team with Sendoh, Uozumi and Ikegami especially are Ryonan's best defensive players.
Weakness[]
Ryonan doesn't have very talented players. They are good, but the difference between Sendoh, the only talented player, and the others are big. The team has no Point Guard that is at least on the same level as Miyagi and a sharpshooter like Mitsui or Jin. Because of these scarcities, Sendoh has to take charge, which puts more pressure to him.
Coach Taoka's failure to win the finals for the Interhigh qualifications was underestimating Sakuragi, a total beginner who is fast learner with inhuman talent, and Kogure, an experienced "jack of all trades" veteran, he is unable to see them as threats, which led to the downfall of Ryonan.
Like Shohoku, Ryonan also have a weak bench, which was shown when Uozumi was lured into fouling out thus, they do not have a strong Center to replace him. Another weakness is Fukuda having a weak defense despite his great offense. His defense is so weak that even Sakuragi can get past him.
