Upon learning the proper technique of the layup shot, the following day, a delighted Hanamichi arrives at Shohuko High. Everyone at school is confused as to why Hanamichi is so excited. Nozomi asks Hanamichi why he is smiling? Yuji tells Nozomi that Hanamichi has finally gone insane and is confident another girl must have rejected him. On hearing, Hanamichi teases Nozomi that he is such a chubby individual, same as coach Anzai, and he should go on a diet or something. Nozomi becomes frustrated and tells Hanamichi not to bother him. Hanamichi further mocks Nozomi by touching his belly and tells him, such a huge belly it looks like it belongs to a 16-year-old. Both Nozomi and Yuji astonishingly stares at their friend. Hanamichi urges both to exercise, especially in the morning, because workout exercise is good for health.

An excited Hanamichi leaves. Nozomi informs Yuji, their friend Hanamichi has gone insane. At that time, Yohei and Chuichirou arrive at school, and they see their good friends Nozomi and Yuji. Chuichirou asks what's up with Hanamichi. He looks happy? Yohei clarifies the confusion and informs his good friends yesterday, Hanamichi secretly practiced playing basketball with Haruko, and both were alone. That is why he seems happy. While heading towards the classroom, Hanamichi sees Fuji and cheerfully tries to confirm she is Haruko's best friend. A scared and confused Fuji replies, yes, she is. Hanamichi then excitingly head towards his class. Nozomi is still in doubt and asks his friends that when did Haruko and Hanamichi became good friends. He is confident this must be a coincidence, and nothing is going on. Chuichirou agrees and believes that Hanamichi is a highly naïve individual who gets excited about small trivial things. Chuichirou then nicknames Hanamichi' King of Naïve.'

The first-period class session at Shohuko High begins. While attending his class, a non-serious Hanamichi daydreams about his yesterday's practice session with Haruko. On noticing a daydreaming Hanamichi. The instructor becomes frustrated and states another one of his pupils in his class session is sleeping. He questions his way of teaching and states, is my class session this boring. Yohei smiles at Hanamichi and, seeing his non-serious behavior, says that he is indeed King of Naïve. Similar to Hanamichi, Haruko in her classroom is also sleeping. Fuji requests her friend to wake up. Rukawa is the third person to join them, and he is also fast asleep. Rukawa's colleague informs his instructor about it. The instructor replies, ignore him. While sleeping, Hanamichi recalls his yesterday's practice session and feels happy. In his dream, while attempting to layup, Hanamichi, instead of a ball at the palm of his hand, sees a black cat, referring to bad luck. He messes up his timing and falls to the ground. A worried Haruko tries to ask Hanamichi if he is okay. Hanamichi reassures Haruko he is fine and notices her changed face, which looks like Takenori. All of a sudden, Hanamichi wakes up and screams.

Yohei asks Hanamichi what happened? Hanamichi doesn't reply. On seeing the black cat in his dream states, this is not a good sign for him. After school, Hanamichi and the rest of the Shohuko High members head to their school's basketball court. A delighted Hanamichi tells Takenori that he learned the basics of the layup shot and was successful once. Takenori angrily replies, geez, you only made one successful layup and critiques. There is no need for you to be celebrating. Hanamichi becomes frustrated. Kogure intervenes and tells Hanamichi that it's a reasonable effort on his part and encourages him to practice more. Hanamichi becomes excited. On seeing a cheerful Hanamichi. Takenori again critiques him and states to improve. One has to practice every day. Takenori instructs Hanamichi to practice. Kogure interrupts their discussion praises Hanamichi that he is the first person on their team who has improved drastically. Hanamichi becomes happy, and he thanks his senior for the compliments.

Takenori then instructs his teammates to gather around and states their upcoming practice match opponent is Ryonan High. Hanamichi becomes excited to hear that. Kogure informs all the freshmen on their team that Ryonan High is the top four team in their region. Takenori further states this is an essential match for them, and if victorious, this will be a good start for their team to work towards their goal of making it into the Inter-High Tournament. Takenori then encourages all his teammates to practice diligently and give their best efforts. All of them agree. They form a circle, chant their team’s name and begin their practice session. Hikoichi Aida an aspiring freshman from Ryonan High. Due to his cautious scouting nature, Hikoichi usually has a habit of travelling to see the school of his upcoming opponent. This time Hikoichi journeys to Shohuko High and mid-way asks some city locals for directions. Upon receiving proper guidance, Hikoichi opens his notebook and notices Shohuko High has thirteen members on their team. Judging from their previous last year's records, they're overall an average club. However, this year their team has recruited the anticipated freshman Kaede Rukawa. So, his team has to be prepared and cautious.

After the conclusion of the practice session, an enthusiastic Hanamichi works on perfecting the layup shot. Out of five attempts, Hanamichi is successful on three. On seeing his improved performance, Hanamichi praises himself by calling genius basketball player. Hanamichi further states that he would never have thought a genius like him would stay late practice. Hanamichi then vows to prove to everyone, especially Rukawa and Takenori, that he is a genius basketball player. Hanamichi then wonders on his exceptional performance what will be Haruko's reaction. On seeing no one at the court, Hanamichi encourages himself to do a slam dunk. At that time, Hikoichi arrives at Shohuko High, and upon entering the basketball court, hears the dribbling sounds. Hikoichi is amazed at this late hour someone is practicing and praises Shohuko High is an amazing team. They're his team's worthy competitors, so he needs to be cautious. On opening the front door of the gymnasium, Hikoichi sees Hanamichi. He is shocked and stunned by Hanamichi's jumping ability. However, Hanamichi being a novice basketball player misses the dunk. Hanamichi critiques himself that he jumped too early for the dunk and notices Hikoichi standing on the court. Hanamichi asks who he is? A confused Hikoichi stares at him.
