NYC’s food hall scene was bursting at the seams at the start of the year — splashy, giant venues like luxurious art-deco Garment District space the Deco and LES newcomer the Market Line at Essex Crossing had barely opened — when the buildings were forced to shut their doors as the pandemic hit the city.
Many stayed quiet in the following months, and in that time, started developing new operations for a socially-distant dining scene. Chelsea Market vendors like Los Tacos No. 1 started building pickup windows and launching delivery for the first time. Time Out Market in Dumbo reopens this week with a new app for customers to place orders online with each of the market’s vendors. And Smorgasburg, the outdoor market that typically brought tens of thousands of customers to its flagship Williamsburg lot each summer weekend, has been retooled as Smorg To Go, a takeout-only operation with vendors that rotate out weekly.
Here, we’ve mapped out what’s happening across twelve NYC food halls in Manhattan and Brooklyn, from reopening timeframes to outdoor dining layouts and which vendors are offering takeout and delivery right now.
A number of New York City restaurants have resumed outdoor dining services. However, this should not be taken as endorsement for outdoor dining, as there are still safety concerns: for updated information on coronavirus cases in your area, please visit the NYC Health Department’s website. Studies indicate that there is a lower exposure risk when outdoors, but the level of risk involved with patio dining is contingent on restaurants following strict social distancing and other safety guidelines.
