It doesn’t get much more comforting than the dumpling — delicate dough stuffed with some combination of ingredients which has been boiled, steamed, or fried. Popular at dim sum feasts in Chinatowns around the country, New Orleans may have few such offerings (Panda King in Gretna has the market cornered on dim sum cart service) but there are still plenty of local dumplings to die for, found at New Orleans’s best spots for Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, and more. And not for nothing, the frozen version carried at Hong Kong Market in Gretna can satisfy a craving in a pinch.

Here’s where to find the best dumplings — from gyoza to bao to shu mai — in and around New Orleans, with a focus on takeout and/or delivery.

Little Chinatown - Kenner

Love this friendly Kenner Chinese restaurant, with hard to find dishes like congee and whole Peking duck on menu. Little Chinatown also serves traditional pan fried and steamed pork dumplings, along with a tasty dumpling soup, swimming with dumplings stewed with a mix of pork, shrimp, mushrooms, and scallions.

Tucked away in a Lakeview shopping center, Ming’s is a popular spot open for takeout, delivery and dining in (with a reservation). All of the restaurant’s current dumpling offerings are deep fried, including cho cho, an order of six fried wontons stuffed with shrimp, barbecue pork, and onions. Check the website because the abbreviated menu changes, sometimes including fried and steamed dumplings.

China Rose

This Metairie standy made a name for itself nearly a decade ago for adventurous dishes like bean curd skin, tripe with special sauce, and fried pork intestines, but the restaurant’s traditional dishes — including the dumplings — are also a draw, both the wontons and potstickers. Ask for the secret menu and get the soup dumplings.

Wishing Town Bakery Cafe

Vivi and Kevin Zheng’s hybrid bakery/Asian cafe serves some of the very best dumplings in New Orleans — and the offerings are perhaps the most extensive to be found locally, as well. Flavorful dumpling varieties include pork buns, a pork floss dumpling roll, scallop and shrimp pocket dumplings, crawfish, onion and beef, on and on. Excitingly, Wishing Town is opening a second location at the corner of Nashville Avenue and Magazine Street in early 2022.

Royal China Restaurant

This Metairie standby on Vets offers traditional and not when it comes to dumplings, all tasty. Try Royal China’s dragon dumplings — their version of the soup dumpling that is best eaten with happy caution. You don’t see fried chicken dumplings everywhere, and these are good. Same for the traditional pork spiked with plenty of ginger, pan fried for sure.

Dian Xin

The joy of having spicy Sichuan food in the French Quarter is boundless for fans of the chili-driven fare from the province in southwest China. Absolutely try the xiao long bao, or soup dumplings, made with ground pork, ginger, and garlic swimming in a searing hot broth — best to coddle the dumpling in a spoon and gently poke it with the chop stick to let the steam out, and make it easy to slurp. Also say yes to pan fried pork dumplings and shrimp wonder in garlic chili sauce.
