Louisiana’s first Shake Shack opens its doors in Metairie today, the first of three locations planned for the New Orleans area this year.

Known for its hormone-and-antibiotic-free burgers, chicken, and hot dogs, the location at Veterans Memorial Boulevard and Severn Avenue adds local beers (Abita Brewery, NOLA Brewing, Dixie and Second Line Brewing) frozen custards made with Haydel’s Bakery ingredients, and a partnership with the Louisiana SPCA. The burger chain takes over the former location of Lager’s International House, which the owner closed in December 2018 due to rent increases.

A flagship location of Shake Shack in Downtown’s Canal Place is is expected to open by the end of the year. Documents filed with the city indicate it will be able to sell alcohol, and plans for the street-level shop include taking over some of what is currently a Brooks Brothers clothing store, which will be reconfigured. Shake Shack is also among the restaurants planned for the long-awaited Louis Armstrong airport terminal.

The three Louisiana Shake Shacks are part of a big year of expansion for Danny Meyer’s highly successful fast food venture. It now has around 180 locations across 26 U.S. states and a number of international locations, with the website touting 40+ new Shake Shacks this year. 2019 is also the year the company fully ditches plastic straws.

Shake Shack at 3501 Veterans Memorial Boulevard is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
