Telltale Games was a video game developer. It was founded by former LucasArts developers seeking to return to the adventure game genre. The company is known for their episodic releases for all of their games. The studio was closed due to bankruptcy in 2018 with a new studio with the same name forming after acquiring most of their properties later that year.

History[]

Founded in 2004, Telltale Games is best known for their point-and-click adventures, most of which have been released on the PC. They released several of their games on the Wii and its downloadable video game service, WiiWare. Their first Nintendo platform game, CSI: Hard Evidence, was released in 2007 and didn't fair too well with the critics. However, their Wii games have been improved in quality with the release of Sam & Max Season One (a sequel to the PC classic) and Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, an episodic video game for WiiWare. During the Wii U era, they mostly ignored the platform until 2016 with the release of Minecraft: Story Mode: The Complete Adventure, which included all eight episodes of Minecraft: Story Mode's first season, though their other games at that time gave them critical acclaim and bigger licenses.

In October 2018, the studio collapsed due to bankruptcy. The rights of their licensed games reverted to the license holders, such as The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series which went back to Skybound Entertainment. The Sam & Max games were given to Skunkape Games, which is made of the former Telltale developers.

In 2019, the Telltale brand was revived under the ownership of LCG Entertainment. While most of the properties reverted to their license owners, the studio obtained ownership of The Wolf Among Us license and republished the Batman games with a noir-like graphics effects, calling it the Shadows Edition.
