Ridge Racer 64 is a racing video game for the Nintendo 64 released in 2000. The game does not contain very many new tracks, but rather courses that were present in previous Ridge Racer games, as well as its own set of courses. Ridge Racer was licensed to Nintendo by Namco and the game was developed by Redmond based Nintendo Software Technology. Tracks called "Renegade", exclusive to the Nintendo 64. This is the first Ridge Racer game that is not released in Japan. In 2004, a remake called Ridge Racer DS was released for the Nintendo DS.
Gameplay[]
The game is a traditional racing game that consists of stages from the original Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution. The game's modes include:
- Grand Prix: The main tournament mode. You cannot change the amount of laps for each track, and the number depends on the course. You can choose your car but you have to win first place in order to continue on to the next race.
- Quick Play: Play any single course you want to without the constraints of Grand Prix. Each course has three laps and there are 12 competitors in all including yourself.
- Car Attack: Here you compete for enhanced vehicles but you have to get first place to win a car.
- Time Attack: Play against your own ghosts, trying to beat your previous time on any of the available tracks.

Reception[]
Michael Wolf of NextGen gave a positive review for the Nintendo 64 version. Joe Ottoson of AllGame gave it four-and-a-half stars out of five, saying, "If you're looking for some intense but uncomplicated racing action, Ridge Racer 64 is nearly at the peak of straight up racing action on the Nintendo 64. With a wide variety of tracks and plenty of hidden cars to unlock there's a lot to see and win over the course of the game." Michael "Major Mike" Weigand of GamePro said of the same Nintendo 64 version in one review, "Arcade racing fans who have had to be content with San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing and Cruis'n titles will find Ridge Racer 64 a big improvement. Although the multiplayer races are a disappointment, solo compeitors will want to add this title to their collections." In another GamePro review, however, The Freshman called it "a decent game for people who must have every Ridge Racer known to man, but last year's Ridge Racer was much better. In the supersaturated world of N64 racing, RR64 barely manages to keep up."
Trivia[]
- Ridge Racer 64 is notable for its high difficulty races including the first place requirement for every Grand Prix race and the car attack mode making it highly difficult to play.
