The Magic Paintbrush is an item that first appeared in Super Mario Sunshine for the GameCube. In the game, it revealed that Professor E. Gadd originally made it for Mario, but Bowser Jr, Bowser's son, was given the brush instead. Once he was given it it, he covered the toxic ink that was in the paintbrush across the Isle Delfino.
Super Mario Sunshine[]
The Magic Paintbrush made its first appearance in the Super Mario series in the video game Super Mario Sunshine. When Bowser Jr. obtained the Magic Paintbrush from E. Gadd, he used it to cover all of Isle Delfino with graffiti as well as creating hostile creatures and using it to disguise himself as Shadow Mario. Due to Bowser Jr.'s disguise, Mario is wrongfully accused of defacing Isle Delfino and is sentenced to clean up the entire island.
In Pinna Park, after Shadow Mario reveals himself to be Bowser Jr., he claims that the Magic Paintbrush was given to him by E. Gadd.
A majority of enemies, puzzles, and hazards in Super Mario Sunshine revolve around the goop and graffiti that the Magic Paintbrush leaves behind. Mario then uses F.L.U.D.D., another invention by E. Gadd, to clean up the goop.
If the player has not collected all 120 Shine Sprites, the Magic Paintbrush is found on an island near Gelato Beach by Il Piantissimo.
Other Appearances[]
Mario Power Tennis[]
In Mario Power Tennis, Bowser Jr. uses the Magic Paintbrush as both of his Power Shot. For Magic Paint, his offensive Power Shot, Bowser Jr. quickly colors the tennis ball and creates two replicas of the same color before sending it to the other side of the court. For Rolling Brush Return, Bowser Jr.'s defensive Power Shot, he twirls on one foot behind the tennis ball, then hits it with the Magic Paintbrush as he spins it, sending the ball to the other side of the court.
Super Mario Sluggers[]
In Mario Super Sluggers, the Magic Paintbrush appears as Bowser Jr.'s bat. When using Graffiti Swing, Bowser Jr.'s Star Swing move, he creates a duplicate paint ball along with the baseball and sends both of them into the air, with the duplicate landing first and exploding, stunning those who are caught within the radius.
Bowser Jr. also uses the Magic Paintbrush for his Star Pitch move Graffiti Ball, where he covers the baseball in paint and pitches it, which also obscures the batter's view with goop.
The Magic Paintbrush also appears in Bowser Jr.'s minigame Graffiti Runner, in which players compete to be the first to coat most of the tarp in their player color. The Magic Paintbrush, however, has a limited amount of paint and when the player carrying it runs out of paint, the brush is dropped, but it can also get knocked away.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Bowser Jr., as well as the Koopalings, use the Magic Paintbrush as part of their Final Smash, Shadow Mario Paint. With the Magic Paintbrush on hand, they turn into Shadow Mario and paint a giant X on the screen, damaging players that touch it. However, the X explodes after a while and sends players standing next to it flying. Additionally, the Magic Paintbrush has an "evil" version of E. Gadd's logo on it.
It returned basically unchanged in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
