DK Coins are items that appear in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Donkey Kong Land 2, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, Donkey Kong Land III, DK: King of Swing, and DK: Jungle Climber as hidden items found in every level.
History[]
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest/Land 2[]
These items mark their first appearance as Cranky Kong's Video Game Hero Coins, or just Hero Coins for short, in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. There is one hidden in each stage, some of which can only be obtained if the player hits the goal post at the right time. In the Lost World stages, the Hero Coins are obtained by clearing their respective bonus stages. After beating Kaptain K. Rool at the end of the game, the player can access Cranky's Video Game Heroes ranking; according to this screen, Mario collected 39 Hero Coins, Yoshi collected 29, and Link collected 19. Diddy Kong receives a ranking on the screen depending on how many Hero Coins the player collects.
Hero Coins later make their second appearance in Donkey Kong Land 2 with no significant changes.
In the Game Boy Advance port of DKC2, the game contained an extra twenty-eight Hero Coins in the game. To get them, Diddy and Dixie must do the following:
- Complete all of the missions at Funky's Flights II.
- Get first place in all of Expresso's Racing races.
- Filling up the whole Scrapbook.
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!/Land III[]
DK Coins make another appearance in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! with it being hidden in every level like in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. The difference is that they can all be obtained by defeating a Koin from behind it with a Steel Keg. There are forty one DK Coins found in this game and forty six in its GBA port with the other DK Coins being located in Pacifica. If a level is completed with the DK Coin collected, a yellow pennant will be shown on top of the flag. If all of the DK Coins, they must then visit Funky to build them a Gyrocopter. Then, the Kongs must access the last three Banana Bird cave that is only accessible via the Gyrocopter. The only DK Coin not being guarded by Koin is in Knautilus when Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong defeated Baron K. Roolenstein.
In Donkey Kong Land III, DK Coins make their fourth appearance in this game. In this game, they are hidden in every level and can be obtained when completing the Matching game in Sheepy Shop. After completing Tin Can Valley, Dixie and Kiddy must collect all of the DK Coins to enter the Lost World. When they enter the Lost World, they must collect the last six DK Coins in order to complete the game.
DK: King of Swing/DK: Jungle Climber[]
In this game, DK Coins make their fifth appearance and must be recollected in order to continue on with the Jungle Jam Tournament, due to King K. Rool stealing all of the DK Coins. There are also silver and bronze DK Coins introduced in this game.
In DK: Jungle Climber, DK Coins make their sixth and latest appearance and are used to unlock cheats throughout the game.
