The World of Light is the story mode present in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It's the first story mode in a Super Smash Bros. game since the Subspace Emissary in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Plot[]
The mode starts with every character in the base game standing on a cliff similar to the one in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The fighters are shown facing Galeem, a large celestial being with an army of Master Hands. After some dialogue between fighters, Galeem absorbs all the Master Hands and sends out massive beams of light, which Shulk forsees but is unable to stop in time. Galeem's rays of light consume almost all the fighters one by one except for Kirby, who flies on his Warp Star. Kirby uses the Warp Star's power to temporarily enter another plane of existance to avoid the beams. The beams are then shown hitting various non-playable characters, turning them into Spirits. The captured fighters are used to make puppet clones.
Kirby appears in the large world, where he starts to battle Spirits to help him while also rescuing other fighters. The fighters defeat Giga Bowser, Galleom, and Rathalos, the three bosses powering Galeem's shield. They defeat a Master Hand before battling and defeating Galeem. Their victory is short-lived, however, as Dharkon and his army of Crazy Hands arrive, taking control of the remaining Spirits and fighters.
The fighters defeat Ganon, Marx, and Dracula, the three bosses of Dharkon. They then battle and defeat Dharkon, sending him into retreat. However, Galeem reappears with an army of Spirits. From here, the fighters must battle both the forces of Galeem and the forces of Dharkon. From here, there are three endings.
Consumed by light[]
If the fighters defeat too many of Dharkon's Spirits and not enough of Galeem's, or if they only fight Dharkon, Galeem will consume the world with light.
Swallowed by darkness[]
If the fighters defeat too many of Galeem's Spirits and not enough of Dharkon's, or if they only fight Galeem, Dharkon will swallow the world with darkness.
Restoration[]
If the fighters maintain balance between the armies, they will battle Master Hand and Palutena (sent by Galeem) as well as Crazy Hand and Bayonetta (sent by Dharkon). After this, the Hands will help, and if the armies are still balanced, the player will temporarily control Master Hand to battle an army of puppet fighters. In the final battle, the fighters contend against all six bosses once more, before battling Galeem and Dharkon simultaneously, while they also fight each other. Once they are defeated, the Spirits are freed, and they return to their original worlds.
Gameplay[]
The player controls a fighter on a large overworld map, which features many distinct areas. The player starts as Kirby but can switch to other fighters as they are unlocked. The player can walk the player along many different paths, which are frequently blocked by Spirits or controlled fighters. If the player defeats them, they will obtain the Spirit or fighter. Occassionally, there will be an obstacle which can only be bypassed with a certain Spirit or one of a few Spirits. Certain Spirits are also Master Spirits, who control a facility.

Master Spirits[]
Master Spirits are a type of Spirit that (with one exception) can only be obtained by finding their facility in World of Light. There are four kinds of facilities: A gym, where Spirits can level up without the use of snacks; Explorations, where Spirits (including support Spirits) can go on expeditions; dojos, where Spirits can learn styles that alter the users stats; and shops, where Spirits and items can be bought.

Trivia[]
- According to Masahiro Sakurai, Kirby was chosen to be the initial protagonist because he was one of three fighters (the other two being Palutena and Bayonetta) who could plausibly survive Galeem's attack. Of the three, Kirby was the most suitable for an introductory character.
- Bayonetta and Palutena are fought simultaneously near the end of the story, seemingly as a reference to this.
- According to Sakurai, the reason there are puppet fighters of Kirby despite him having avoided capture is because Galeem managed to analyze him halfway through the story.
- World of Light is possible to beat with as few as 22 characters. 20 of them (Kirby, Mario, Fox, Bowser, Simon, Pit, Samus, Sonic, Zelda, Young Link, Cloud, Ganondorf, Greninja, Ike, Ice Climbers, Meta Knight, Roy, Dark Samus, Bayonetta, Palutena) are mandatory, while the final two are one of three pairs of fighters (Marth/Pac-Man, Sheik/Yoshi, Villager/Lucario).
- DLC fighters are unlocked as soon as the player unlocks ten fighters.
