　科学の文化史（カルチュラル・ヒストリー）と題された論文を読む。といっても著者は科学史にかんしては文化史という名称よりも、社会文化史（sociocultural history）という言葉を使うことを好んでいる。この名称の方によって、ある科学コミュニティの研究カルチャーを規定している社会的条件の探求も含めた科学史をより適切に指示できるからのようだ。この好みに現れているように、著者が科学史のカルチュラルヒストリーとして紹介する文献は、70年代以降のイギリスで盛んとなった科学知識の社会学と、そこから刺激を受けてなされた一連の研究である（これは同じ科学の文化史を論じていても、Joseph Rouseのとらえ方とは異なる）。David Bloor, Barry Barnes, Harry Collinsらの社会学における仕事と、Martin Rudwick, James Secord, Steven Shapin（とSimon Schaffer）らの歴史研究があげられる。これらの研究はみな科学知識が特定の時空間に成立していた科学者コミュニティの研究文化の産物であるとみなし、そこでの知識産出のあり方を探求している。これはかつての初期近代科学史を支配していた史観とはおおきく異なる。かつては知識のあり方が時空間に規定されていることを考慮せずに、（現代科学へと続く）決められた発展の経路がいかに歴史上展開されていたかを調べていたからである。科学の文化史の着想の源泉としてもう一つ著者があげるのが、人類学だ。Robin Horton, Mary Douglas, Clifford Geertzらの研究が科学史研究に与えた影響が論じられている。
