- "We prepared for this, doctor. Harnessing energy from spcae."
- ―Nick Fury to Erik Selvig[src]
The Tesseract Accelerator[1] was a device built by Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. to harness the power of the Tesseract. An upgraded version was also used by Loki to open a wormhole and start the Chitauri Invasion of New York City.
History[]
Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S.[]
- "NASA didn't order Selvig to go to test phase."
"He wasn't testing it. He wasn't even in the room. Spontanious event."
"It just turned itself on?" - ―Nick Fury, Phil Coulson and Maria Hill[src]
Reactivating Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. at the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility, Nick Fury contacted doctor Erik Selvig to work on the Tesseract when it was found in the ocean. Selvig, along with NASA and the United States Air Force developed the Tesseract Accelerator, a device capable of harnessing the power of the Tesseract. However, unknown to S.H.I.E.L.D., Selvig was under the control of the Asgardian god Loki.[2]
When Loki set his plan to invade Earth into motion, he activated the Tesseract and the accelerator created a portal from the barren wastelands of space to the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility, which left a surge of energy in its wake. Loki then promptly took control of Erik Selvig and Clint Barton, shot Nick Fury, and stole the Tesseract for himself. The first version of the Tesseract Accelerator was destroyed during the Destruction of Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S..[2]
Rebuilt[]
- "Iridium... What do they need the Iridium for?"
"It's a stabilizing agent. It means the portal won't collapse on itself like it did at S.H.I.E.L.D.. Also, it means the portal can stay open as wide and stay open as long, as Loki wants." - ―Bruce Banner and Tony Stark[src]
Having taken control of Doctor Erik Selvig and Clint Barton, Loki had Selvig build a second version of the Tesseract Accelerator at his hideout. When Selvig needed a stabilizing agent to keep the wormhole created by the accelerator from collapsing in on itself, Selvig sent Barton to retrieve Iridium. Once Selvig had the Iridium, he added it to the second version of the Tesseract Accelerator and moved it to the top of Stark Tower.[2]
Chitauri Invasion[]
- "Sir, I've turned off the Arc Reactor, but the device is already self-sustaining."
- ―J.A.R.V.I.S. to Tony Stark[src]
With the final version of the Tesseract Accelerator complete, Erik Selvig moved it to the top of Stark Tower. There, he connected it to the tower's Arc Reactor to generate enough power for it to become self-sustaining. When Iron Man showed up and attempted to destroy the Tesseract Accelerator, he found out that Selvig had already activated the accelerator and that it was encased in a barrier of pure energy. With the accelerator running, it opened a wormhole in the sky and let the Chitauri loose on New York City.[2]
When Black Widow made her way to the top of Stark Tower to figure out how to shut down the Tesseract Accelerator, Erik Selvig told her that Loki's Scepter was the key to closing the wormhole. Black Widow got the Scepter and was ready to close the portal before Iron Man told her to hold off until he could put an Atomic Bomb launched by the World Security Council through it. When the bomb was finally though the portal, Black Widow cut the Tesseract Accelerator's crown and closed the portal, destroying the device.[2]
Alternate Universes[]
Super Soldier Peggy Carter[]
In a universe where Captain Peggy Carter sacrificed herself by going through a portal to save the lives of Steve Rogers and the Howling Commandos, Carter arrived though a portal made by the Tesseract Accelerator in the 21st century. Carter remained in that time period and fought as a member of the Avengers when Loki used an upgraded version of the Tesseract Accelerator to attack New York City.[3][4]
Capabilities[]
The Tesseract Accelerator was a device that was able to contain the power of the Tesseract and use it to open wormholes. The device had energy siphon channels as well as a containment field to regulate power. The upgraded version also contained Iridium as a stabilizing agent to prevent an excess build-up of explosive energy and to keep the energy concentrated on the portal. The accelerator also emitted a protective energy shield that could only be broken through with a similar level of energy.[2][1]
